Teens dicing with death through choking game
2008-04-14 16:16:00 School students in Australia are dicing with their lives by playing dangerous choking game in which they partially strangle themselves to get a ‘high’, warn doctors. Youngsters revealed that the choking game, in which they become semi-asphyxiated, enables them to achieve a hypoxia-induced euphoric state. They undergo a partial or complete loss of consciousness brought about by the intentional deprivation of oxygen to the brain for a short period. Adolescents psychologist Michael Carr-Gregg claim it to be ‘incredibly dangerous’. "Children get bored, there is not much stimulation in their lives and they look for a cheap thrill," the Daily Telegraph quoted him as saying. Dr Carr-Gregg also advised parents not to overlook the destructive behaviour and discuss with them the potential dangers of any such behaviour. In the game, children use dog leashes, bungee cords wrapped around their necks or other means to temporarily cut blood flow to their head. The goal is a dreamlike, floating-in-space feeling when blood rushes back into the brain. As many as 20 percent of teens and preteens play the game, sometimes in groups, according to some estimates based on a few local studies. But nearly all the deaths were youths who played alone, according to the count complied by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
