Music Review: Drag Me To Hell Original Motion Picture Soundtrack, by Christ
2009-09-05 02:19:00
From the first trailer showcasing Sam Raimi’s Drag Me To Hell, it was clear that Raimi was taking a break from the multi-billion dollar web-slinging franchise and heading back into the horror genre to give audiences a little reminder of where his true roots lie. And Drag Me To Hell was appreciated by audiences everywhere ...

Part 2: Crossan on the Meaning of Christ?s Sacrifice
2009-08-06 18:16:00
The following is excerpted from John Domonic Crossan?s book, ?God and Empire?: “THE MEANING OF SACRIFICE” Apart from narrativity, let alone historicity, there is the deeper question of the theology within which Jesus’s execution is understood then and now by Christian believers. For The Passion of the Christ and millions of Christians, it was a theology of ...

For the Love of Christ, What is Up with Q105?
2009-06-16 00:59:00
I grew up listening to Q105. That’s right, before I developed taste in music, I would tune in regularly to WRBQ, Morning Zoo, and Mason Dixon with his recorded laughter tracks. If you peered into my bedroom circa 1984, you’d certainly find me singing along with safe standards like The Fixx, Michael Jackson, and Cyndi Lauper. Oh. The. Horror. Eventually I discovered WMNF, mixed tapes, and the Cuban Club. When Cathy and I started prank calling the station back in 1986…Amber and Shandi lives…the end was quick and painless. I soon forgot all about Top 40 radio, its censored, dissected tunes that represented the lamest of corporate rock, and never looked back. Q105 was dead to me. Recently, though, I began listening again. The station now plays Oldies from the 1960s and 1970s and occasionally such songs provide a history lesson from which my kids could learn to appreciate music. Or so I thought. This morning we were driving along, minding our own business, sing...
Sitting Where Angels Stand
2009-06-03 01:57:00
Good thoughts from David Mathis… What?s more impressive than standing in God?s presence? Sitting?and doing so at the right hand. An angel said to John the Baptist?s father: “I am Gabriel, who stands in the presence of God” (Luke 1:19). That?s noteworthy. But more so is what Hebrews says about Jesus: “After making purification for sins, he sat ...

Why Mike Arroyo is not Jesus Christ
2009-03-16 23:59:00
There's The RubWhy Mike Arroyo is not Jesus ChristBy Conrado de QuirosPhilippine Daily Inquirer02/16/2009 HIS enemies want to kill him by making him appear in the Senate hearing in his fragile state, says Mike Arroyo. (Which makes his enemies out to be patriots in the eyes of the public, but that?s another story.) He says further that having been named in one scam after another doesn?t make him monumentally corrupt, it makes him monumentally persecuted. When his wife took on that tack, a congressman ventured to say that his wife was just like Jesus Christ. Without waiting for another congressman to say the same thing about him, I hasten to write this piece. Mike Arroyo is not Jesus Christ because: JC is the Second Person in the Holy Trinity. FG is the First Gentleman in the Unholy Couple. JC?s riches are not of this earth. FG?s riches are out of this world. When JC was born, a bright star shone in the sky, and the Three Wise Men followed it offering gold, frankincense and myrrh to ...

Christ the Cornerstone
2009-02-25 18:12:00
A lesson I preached in the A.M. assembly of January 25, 2008 at Laurel Canyon. The opposite of “living hope” (1 Peter 1:3) is dead resignation. Dead resignation takes away people’s hopes and dreams of change and growth. The message of the early verses of 1 Peter 2 is that God wants us to feel ...

Against Spiritual Abuse
2009-01-26 19:10:00
Spiritual abuse is a sad reality. Churches, pastors, and others can perpetuate it. I’m sure among cults it is common, but unfortunately in many independent Baptist circles, it is too. I don’t want to say that everyone who claims to have been spiritually hurt this way, really was. Nor do I impugn evil motives on the ...

A sermon I presented in the 12/7/08 P.M. assembly at Laurel Canyon. One of the clearest teachings of the Bible is the fact that Jesus will come again. But is He now reigning as King in His kingdom? Has His kingdom even been established as of yet? And if so, when did it occur? And ...
The church and Britain: a homily for Christ the King Sunday
2008-12-09 01:59:00
A guest-post by Andrew Brower Latz (Ben’s note: Sorry, I’m a couple of weeks behind with this – but I still wanted to post this excellent sermon, which Andrew Brower Latz, an F&T-reader, preached recently for Christ the King Sunday)Today is the feast of Christ the King, or the Reign of Christ, the last Sunday of the Christian year. It was established by the Roman Catholic Church in the 20th century in response to the rise of fascism. It proclaims, in the words of Paul, that Christ is ‘far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named.’ Powerful stuff, but what does it mean for us today, living in a 21st-century liberal democracy?Let me begin with two examples from the media, one recent and one not so recent. The first, on Thursday on Radio 3, was a discussion with Trevor Philips, director of the Commission for Racial Equality; someone towards the left of the political spectrum, who describes himself as progressive and libertarian. ...
Melchizedek?s Supper: Bread, Wine and a Blessing from the Prefigured Christ

But, because I have too many blogs, as I discuss at MalcolmDow .com, it was posted to A Reasonable Mystic by mistake. I'm interested to see what my readers there make of it. Anyway, here's what should have appeared here: This morning I was reading "My Prayer Journal" in the Victorian Baptist Witness. Part of the diary for Wednesday and Thursday went as follows:Something interesting happened today. Saw Greg put 'religion' and 'new age'books together (in the 'new age' section). He even put the Bibles there! Itreally upset me and I was surprised at the intensity of my feelings. ......Well I spoke to Greg and thank you God, he was really cool about it. Nate Kerr: Christ, History and Apocalyptic: the politics of Christian missi
2008-10-24 04:06:00
As a regular contributor to our discussions, Nate Kerr is well known to F&T readers. His forthcoming book Christ, History and Apocalyptic is one of the most exciting theological works I’ve read in quite some time. This is mind-expanding, first-rate stuff: it’s both a brilliant critical reading of modern theology (moving through Troeltsch, Barth, Hauerwas and Yoder), and a compelling constructive argument for an “apocalyptic” approach to Christian theology. Really, it could be read as a kind of manifesto: it points the way towards a new way of doing theology, and towards a distinctively theological way of thinking about history and the church’s mission. The book will soon be released in the UK by SCM (as part of their new Veritas series), and in the US by Cascade (as part of their new Theopolitical Visions series).Nate has kindly given me permission to post an excerpt here. So let me whet your appetite – this sample is from Chapter 5, entitled “John Howard Yoder: T...
