2007-12-21 16:00:00 Yesterday I finally mailed out my Christmas cards and yes, I'm aware that they won't arrive in time for Christmas because I've put it off so long. Does anyone else have as much trouble picking out Christmas cards as I do? There are just too many competing issues to make the experience pleasant, probably because I'm too cheap--I mean frugal--to buy cards that are $20 a box so I'm always stuck with the B-list variety.Being a rather religious person I prefer selecting an appropriately religious card as my one shot at a visual representation of the season but most cards that have a religious theme aren?t to my taste, with all the gold embossing and the "thees" and "thous" they're flamboyant enough to make Liberace look understated. The Alliance Defense Fund, and the ACLJ are both great organizations that defend Christmas each year. The Alliance Defense Fund does it for free. Why not help groups like that out this year?However, from experience last yearÂ…I know that many will insist on sending the ACLU a Christmas card. Afterall, it is tradition. One, it gives me an excuse to pick up the pencil and paper - I used to draw comic strips and the Christmas Card always serves as a good excuse to put pen to paper. The other reason I like to do them because it gives me the opportunity to write a personal note instead of a prepackaged note like "Seasons Greetings" or "Blessings of Christmas" or "But this year I am feeling like I have boxed myself into a corner. Now that I am in this religious life, I am wondering what the expectations are now for the note inside. If some people just get wished a "Happy New Year" do they feel ripped off on some level because I forgot to wish them a "Holy New Year"? And am I supposed to end notes with "In Christ" now that I am a seminarian? And what does "In Christ" mean anyway? Would it make me seem less holy if I ended letters or car...

The postcard featuring a color drawing of Santa Claus and a young girl, dated Dec. 23, 1914, was mailed to Ethel Martin of Oberlin, from her cousins in Alma, Nebraska. Since Ethel Martin is deceased, the post office gave the card to a relative, her sister-in-law Bernice Martin.It's a mystery where it spent most of the last century, Oberlin Postmaster Steve Schultz said. Based on a green initiative you can name your own tree, plant it and pump three buckets of water into it (don't give up even though you're almost ready to). At that point you can start decorating it with the tons of different ornaments you can see on the screen capture. The catch...to add more ornaments and lights you have to grow it by returning every day to water your tree at which point your entry will get bigger. Mine, no surprise, is scottstree. I started out traditional but I have great plans. The counter shows how many people have planted trees in what ultimately should become an intriguing forest (competitive one too, given the sites's sponsors). Good stuff. How a.n.a.l. is that? Now I've found a better use for these cards, and it makes me happy and hopefully, someone else happy too.I typically take a string or long piece of dental floss and hang it up between two points on a wall. The Christmas cards we get in the mail, get parked on the string. It really makes a room festive. Try it...you'll like it.Now, don't do what I used to do after the holidays with your cards. This year, put the cards in a little basket. Every few days, next year, take out one of the cards, see who it's from and have your family pray for that family. Then, you are going to cut the card in half. Take the side with the pretty artwork...hopefully the back is still white. If not, get a large label and cover the writing. Draw a line down the middle. You are going to turn this into a postcard!...
