McMore of the Same Votes 100% with Bush in 2008
2008-05-28 06:27:00
When John McCain started preparing himself to run for president in 2008, he knew his votes in the senate would be very important. According to the Congressional Quarterly, when John McCain bothered to show up to vote in the senate, he voted with President Bush 100 percent of the time. CQ determines which pieces of legislation fit with the president?s goals and other literature to determine where the president would stand on the bill. John McCain was voted the most absent senator in 2008, but when he did bother to show up, he voted with the president 100 percent. Granted McCain was campaigning during 2008, but there were many other senators also campaigning for president. Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, Joseph Biden, and Christopher Dodd were all serving in the senate while running for president but did not miss as many votes as McCain did. McCain lost his status as a ?maverick? Republican in the senate when he took his firm position along side President ...
Memo to Voters: None of the Candidates Will Lower Your Gas Prices; A Glance
2008-03-14 22:04:00
One of the oddities of current elective politics is not who the media covers, or in what tone they cover them, but rather the insipid approach to issues most people find important. For instance, gas prices. Andrew Leonard wrote about gas prices and the presidential election at Salon earlier this week. To his credit, he ...SHARETHIS.addEntry({ title: "Memo to Voters: None of the Candidates Will Lower Your Gas Prices; A Glance At Clinton’s “Plan”", url: "http://2008central.net/2008/03-/14/memo-to-voters-none-of-the--candidates-will-lower-your-gas--prices-a-glance-at-clintons-pla-n/" });

Sen. Christopher Dodd to Endorse Obama
2008-02-26 15:18:00
Democratic Sen. Christopher Dodd of Connecticut plans to endorse former presidential rival Barack Obama. Dodd will endorse his colleague, a senator from Illinois, in Cleveland on Tuesday, according to a Democratic official close to Dodd who requested anonymity because no formal announcement had been made. Dodd's support, coupled with his liberal credentials, could provide a boost for Obama as major contests near in big states such as Ohio and Texas on March 4. Obama has won some key Democratic endorsements in recent weeks, including Massachusetts Sen. Edward Kennedy, a close friend of Dodd. Obama and rival Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton had been vying for Dodd's support since he exited the presidential race after a poor showing in the Iowa caucus last month. Dodd, who won his Senate seat in 1980 and chaired the Democratic National Committee from 1995-1996, has long-standing ties to the Clintons. Dodd is a "superdelegate," one of nearly 800 Democratic officeholders and party offic...

An Open Memo To Iowa Democrats
2007-12-21 16:57:00
Greetings, Iowans. Merry Christmas to you and yours. I’d wish there were a better time to have this discussion, but the nonsense of the primary schedule has pretty much defined now as the best time. Iowa Democrats have always been proud of their role of choosing the nominee of the Democratic party. Famously, in 1976 they ...
Dodd filibuster teaches a valuable lesson about the American Mess
2007-12-17 16:14:00
As Martin noted earlier, Sen. Christopher Dodd (D-CT) is filibustering ill-conceived legislation that would give telecommunications companies a pass for engaging in illegal spying activities on behalf of the Bush administration. Those of you who were hopeful in the wake of last year’s sweep of both houses of Congress by the alleged opposition party, and those who are hopeful that the Democrats will also take the White House next year, should take note of something: the filibuster is being conducted against Democratically driven legislation by a member of the majority party. This isn’t a case of outgunned Dems manning the gunports at the Alamo against the evil Republican majority. This is a handful of Dems being forced to defend the Constitution against their own goddamned gutless, bought-and-sold, whoremongering Democratic colleagues - and yes, I’m talking about you, Harry Reid. Be hopeful if you want, but I have not so far been able to find the names of presidenti...

Clinton and Obama Yucca It Up
2007-11-01 15:44:00
Suddenly, with the next Democratic debate looming in Nevada later in November, Yucca Mountain has re-emerged as a major issue following a hearing yesterday. I addressed this issue back in late August, concluding that Yucca was “looming right beneath the surface” in Nevada politics. Marc Ambinder has what amounts to a non-story on Clinton on the ...

Dodd Will Lift Cuba Trade Embargo if Elected
2007-09-08 20:48:00
Today, Chris Dodd vowed to lift the Cuba trade embargo if elected President.Among the policies the U.S. currently have in place, Dodd would also open a U.S. Embassy in Havana, shut down the U.S. run TV Marti Station, repeal the Helms-Burton Act of 1996 and open up mail service from the United States and Cuba."Other than the war in Iraq, no other American policy is more broadly unpopular internationally," Dodd said of the United States' policy toward Cuba.On a personal level, I will love to see the Cuba trade embargo lifted. From what I have heard, Raul Castro, the current Acting President and First Vice President of Cuba is more susceptive to America. But keep this in mind, I will also love to see a full flourishing Democracy in our next door neighbor. Besides, I hear they have some nice beaches.Asked whether Dodd will meet with foreign leaders, Dodd responded, "Presidents don't run around and meet with people automatically." When questioned on the Clinton-Obama feud on meeting wi...
Richardson and Dodd will Follow DNC Rules
2007-08-31 23:07:00
Bill Richardson and Chris Dodd have vowed not to campaign in states that has leapfrogged and broken DNC sanctioned rules for the primary schedule, part of a pledge seeked by the original four early primary and caucus states, Iowa, Nevada, New Hampshire and South Carolina. States such as Florida and Michigan has already scheduled their primary before the approved February 5 date and will hold their races on January 29 and January 15, respectively. Last weekend, the DNC Rules Committee voted to strip Florida of all its delegates to the Convention if it does not schedule its primary on or after the approved date and it is likely they will take the same action against Michigan. In a statement e-mailed by his campaign, Dodd said the four states chosen by the DNC "offer a cross section of America and allow for voters to probe the experience and vision of candidates in a meaningful way.""In this year, where the national media focus seems to be on celebrity and bank accounts, the role of the...
Hillary Talks Terror; Democrats Respond
2007-08-25 18:04:00

Democratic Candidates Weigh in on News Corp. Take Over of Dow Jones, WSJ
2007-08-02 21:35:00
John Edwards is furious witht the Murdoch take over and is now challenging all Democrats to return all donations from News Corp, the parent company of FOX News.?News Corp?s purchase of the Dow Jones Co. and The Wall Street Journal should be the last straw when it comes to media consolidation," Edwards said in a statement distributed by email today. "I?m challenging every Democratic presidential candidate to refuse contributions from News Corp executives and return any they've already taken, beginning with Rupert Murdoch."He added: "The basis of a strong democracy begins and ends with a strong, unbiased and fair media ?- all qualities which are pretty hard to subscribe to Fox News and News Corp. The reality is that Americans deserve more news outlets ?- not fewer. It?s time for all Democrats, including those running for president, to stand up and speak out against this merger and other forms of media consolidation.?Moreover, given Fox News? consistent efforts to demean Democrats -- ...

Cash-on-Hand Numbers
2007-07-16 20:58:00
The Numbers are officially in.Just looking at these numbers and you are either feeling the pain for Republicans, or jumping in joy for the Democrats. Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama have huge cash-on-hand numbers. For the primary, Obama has about $34 million, while Clinton as about $33 million. What is staggering Clinton has over $12 million reserved for the general election should she win the nomination, and many Republicans have conceded that she will indeed win the nomination including former Vice President Dan Quayle. No other candidate can lay claim to such general election support.Apart from the record numbers the burn rates are something worth taking note. John McCain burned through 89% of his war chest. Mitt Romney burned through 73%. Sam Brownback burned through 87%. On the other hand, Hillary Clinton burned through only 28% of her war chest, while Ron Paul had the lowest burn rate among all candidates, using only 22% of his cash.Over the last two quarters, Republicans rai...
