Government Has No Business in Prayer?Especially When Not Inclusive
2008-04-26 19:56:00 Morbo, who frequently writes on matters of church and state at The Carpetbagger Report on Saturdays, describes how the National Day of Prayer has been hijacked by the religious right: The National Day of Prayer is Thursday, May 1. I oppose it. I believe religious leaders should call people to prayer, not government officials. I believe ...

Voting on Values and The Working Class
2008-04-20 22:09:00 Obama’s “bitter-gate” comment led to a lot of controversy over very little. Obama gave a brief answer to a complex question at a fund raiser, which the Clinton and McCain camps tried to distort to earn their own political capital. The attempt was to suggest that Obama was insulting voters in small town America, but ...

McCain Avoids Religion in Politics
2008-04-04 04:58:00 For a moment I almost thought we had a winner for the Arnold Vinick Award. The above video clip from The West Wing shows a fictitious Republican candidate refuse to mix religion in politics. While I give Barack Obama credit for his many statements in support of separation of church and state, he is ...

President Bartlett and Biblical Quotes
2008-03-31 07:47:00 I’ve been posting videos from The West Wing as a demonstration of a president who both understands separation of church and state and who can discuss these matters intelligently. I have to turn to fiction since we do not currently have a president who understands the topic or who can discuss anything intelligently. One ...

Clinton and Obama?s Religious Choices
2008-03-25 19:55:00 Initially Hillary Clinton tried to use surrogates to attack Obama over his association with Wright. Now that Obama has not only survived but has turned this to his advantage, Clinton is getting involved personally. In an interview with the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review Clinton said: “He would not have been my pastor,” Clinton said. “You don’t choose your ...

Mufti Wants Moratorium on French Law Separating Church and State
2008-02-01 14:17:00 The Brussels Journal.reports "Can of Worms: Mufti Wants Moratorium on French Law Separating Church and StateFrom the desk of Tiberge on Fri, 2008-02-01 13:06The mufti of the Paris mosque, Dalil Boubakeur, has dropped what amounts to a political and religious bomb. He proposes a moratorium on the French law of 1905 separating Church and State, because not enough mosques are being built in France.Besides his position as mufti, he is the president of the CFCM (French Council of the Muslim Faith), an association officially established in 2003 thanks to the efforts of Minister of the Interior Nicolas Sarkozy.Questioned by Le Monde, Mr. Boubakeur set forth the idea of a “moratorium of 10 to 20 years” on the 1905 law, which forbids all public funding of places of worship, so that Islam can “catch up” on its needs. “The associations that administer houses of worship need to be given air to breathe,” he says. This has to be one of the most daring statements made yet by a Muslim le...

Obama on Faith-Based Programs and Separation of Church and State
2008-01-23 20:09:00 I’ve often both expressed some displeasure with the frequency with which religion plays a part in Obama’s campaign but have also accepted this in light of his strong support for separation of church and state. I would prefer a time when politicians could dismiss questions of religion as easily as Arnold Vinick, the fictional Republican ...

Separation of Church and State
2007-12-20 23:57:00 I was watching a program recently that really opened my eyes. Now, I love history, but it's been awhile since I actually studied the Constitution of the United States, or it's Amendments. What I learned during the program told me alot that I didn't know. This is the full text of the First Amendment: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.? The First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution Did you notice that there is nothing even related to the phrase "Separation of Church and State"? Did you notice that the First Amendment actually states that Congress will make no law prohibiting the free exercise of religion? Or the right for others to peacably assemble (even in a religious setting)? So where did that term come from? It actually came from Thomas J...

US High Court Won?t Hear Two Religion Cases
2007-10-02 11:27:00 The justices decided not to consider a challenge by religious groups to a New York law requiring health plans to cover birth control pills, and a California case in which an evangelical group was denied use of a public library for religious services.
Pasadena church wants apology from IRS
2007-09-24 12:34:00 The Internal Revenue Service has told a prominent Pasadena church that it has ended its lengthy investigation into a 2004 antiwar sermon, church leaders said Sunday. But the agency wrote in its letter to All Saints Episcopal Church that officials still considered the sermon to have been illegal, prompting the church to seek clarification, a corrected record and an apology from the IRS, the church's rector told standing-room-only crowds of parishioners at Sunday's services.
IRS ends church probe

IRS combats fake-church tax scams
2007-09-22 14:12:00 You won't find these Arizona religious groups in any neighborhood directory of churches. They don't have temples. They don't hold services. Instead, state and federal authorities say they are individually owned corporations, called corporations sole, that were set up to dodge income taxes. Promoters of the schemes rake in large fees and, in one case, used them as part of a pyramid scheme, authorities say.
ACLJ: Laying down the religious law

2007-08-31 23:55:00 The Texas Supreme Court reversed lower court decisions today and ruled that state restrictions on what unaccredited religious institutions can call themselves and their education training violate the First Amendment.
Will Church and State merge?
2007-08-25 17:01:00 Louisiana College, a 1,000-student school in Pineville, expects to hire a law dean next year and enroll up to 40 students in 2009, eventually building enough capacity to enroll 300 students. The school will seek accreditation from the American Bar Association. What is so Jaded City News worthy about this you ask? The College plans to establish a law school with a "biblical worldview" that aims to train defenders of conservative Christian values. As if Jerry Falwell's Liberty University and Pat Robertson's Regent University don't already do that. The Louisiana College law school will be named for Judge Paul Pressler, a leader in the conservative takeover of the Southern Baptist Convention over the last few decades. Louisiana College, founded in 1906, is run by trustees chosen by the Louisiana Baptist Convention and requires faculty members accept Christ as their savior. Well it seems the Conservatives are raising an army for what is sure to be a full scale war on secular society...
Not so fast, Christian soldiers
2007-08-22 10:36:00 Last week, after an investigation spurred by the Military Religious Freedom Foundation, the Pentagon abruptly announced that it would not be delivering "freedom packages" to our soldiers in Iraq, as it had originally intended. The packages held Bibles, proselytizing material in English and Arabic and the apocalyptic computer game "Left Behind: Eternal Forces" (derived from the series of post-Rapture novels), in which "soldiers for Christ" hunt down enemies who look suspiciously like U.N. peacekeepers.
Church and State should help Europe grow
2007-07-24 21:30:00 Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O?Connor in a lecture given at Cumberland Lodge, Windsor, on April 14 and published in The Times on 21st July 2007 says that recognising Christianity?s role in Europe?s history could save the European project and reinvigorate democracy for the new century. He contrasts the European experience with that of the United States.""Today Americans still readily embrace both religious faith and patriotism, a striking paradox in a land where Church and State are deliberately separated. We have much to learn from the people of the United States. Their search for a better life and their optimism are linked with their religious faith. From their first day at school, American children learn to salute the flag and declare their Americanness. They say: ?God bless America,? and then happily add: ?I?m a Baptist, or a Jew, a Catholic or a Muslim.? To them, it seems, being a good Catholic, a good Jew, a good Baptist or a good Muslim fits in perfectly with being a good American. A...
Unseparation of church and state
2007-06-06 15:58:00 A few days ago I criticised Cardinal George Pell over his plans to force educators in Catholic schools (which receive government funding) to take a "vow of fidelity". It seems that compelling educators to surrender their intellect and will to the church is not enough for Pell. He'd like politicians to do the same or ...

Church and State Blurring in Missouri
2007-05-08 12:38:00 According to the Associated Press via the News Tribune, a bill designed to increase cooperation between the state of Missouri and faith-based organizations passed the Missouri House with a wide margin. This bill requires the Department of Social Services "to coordinate with faith-based organizations" in providing services to the needy. The Missouri Senate already passed the bill, so it is now headed for the governor.Since faith-based programs have not demonstrated their efficacy (and are actually judged by different standards, at least at the federal level), this sounds like a problem for Missouri taxpayers. Being asked to fund faith-based programs without evidence that such programs work as well as their secular alternatives should be a concern. Then again, I suppose if there was evidence that such programs worked, they wouldn't need to be called faith-based, would they?Tags: Missouri, church and state, government

Seperation of church and state means you can?t pray to Jesus
2007-02-04 14:27:01 The debate on my last thread has spilled over and I feel it deserves its own post. To catch you up to speed on the last comment: Are you trying to say that in communities in America where there aren?t any Hindus, Muslims, Buddhists, etc, they should be shipped in so that their voice is heard at these townhall meetings? Are you trying to say that the people in these communities should be forced to read from the Koran or Dhammapada simply because the Muslim and Buddhist voice needs to be heard? You say that the Constitution ?clearly states we allow all viewpoints or none at all.? Please show me where this is in the Constitution. The Constitution says that the government will not establish a religion and that religious expression will not be prohibited. Either you are unlearned on Constitutional law or you have a radical interpretation. Also, I don?t understand the last sentence of your post. Are you attacking me because you can?t defend your points? Or am I missing something. You kn...
separate church and state
2006-12-30 15:27:10 separate church and stateAnn Althouse wrote a blog entry about Wisconson voters accepting an amendment to their state constitution limiting marriage to one man and one woman, saying:you don't have to feel so morose about the recent vote. It doesn't mean that much. But don't just cheer up. Milford wants to reinvigorate the amendment's opponents: Keep fighting. You can re-amend the constitution. To this, I left the comment that "Perhaps the States and the federal government ought to follow the first amendment and abide by the principle of separation of church and state, and get out of the marriage business altogether."Someone else pointed out that "it would require a massive overhaul of federal and state tax codes as well as social security, to name just two giant stumbling blocks."Well, good. Tax codes and social security are badly in need of overhaul, not only to bring them in line with the constitution but also to prevent them from bankrupting the nation when the baby boomers s...
