Griffey Joins 600 Club
2008-06-10 03:34:00
  You all may remember Ian’s fascination with Barry Bonds as he approached and passed the all-time home run mark by Hank Aaron. To me it was an incredible achievement but I had a hard time celebrating it because of the person behind it. A week or so ago Boston’s Manny Ramirez hit his 500th career home ...

A look at why it may make sense, despite Seattle’s current position in the AL West, and an indication of how much it would cost. Pete Rose - Cincinnati Reds
2008-04-30 03:30:00
Back in March, while in Las Vegas, I saw Pete Rose at Caesars Palace signing autographs. He didn’t look all too happy to be there. Perhaps it was because there was nobody in line to get his signature. Or maybe he’s still angry he was never inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York ...

Minor League Prospects: Cincinnati Reds
2008-03-28 18:44:00
Last Friday, John Sickels had Cincinnati Reds' Director of Player Development, Terry Reynolds, on his "Down On The Farm Friday" show on XM Radio (soon to be SiriusXM?).  They spoke about the Big Four prospects in Cincinnati - Jay Bruce, Joey Votto, Homer Bailey and Johnny Cueto.  That was not unexpected. What surprised me were the discussion of three other prospects - Todd Frazier, Juan Francisco, and Neftali Soto.  All three had just made my first draft of preparation for my NL-Only minor league draft. For those in very deep leagues that go very deep into minor league prospects, here are three who you may not have heard of but will know by season's end. 1.  SS Todd Frazier:  Reynolds said he will begin the season in Low A Dayton and play SS.  Frazier will stay at SS until he gets blocked, but Reynolds was not concerned about that.  He said Frazier can easily move to 3B and has the power to stick there.  Right out of Rutgers University, the ...

Needs and Luxuries: Cincinnati Reds
2008-01-15 12:52:00
Next up in our Needs and Luxuries series, the Reds.  I realize the timing of this series wasn't ideal, doing a bunch and then tailing off.  It's something I can improve next time around, but it still seems people would like to see the remaining teams reviewed.  Anyway, here's how the Reds are set up: C - Dave Ross1B - Joey Votto/Scott Hatteberg2B - Brandon PhillipsSS - Alex Gonzalez3B - Edwin EncarnacionLF - Adam DunnCF - Ryan Freel/Norris Hopper/Jay BruceRF - Ken Griffey Jr. SP - Aaron HarangSP - Bronson ArroyoSP - Matt BelisleSP - Homer BaileySP - Edinson Volquez/Johnny Cueto Setup - David WeathersCloser - Francisco Cordero Needs: The Reds had a middle of the pack offense in '07, same as '06.  Last year the Reds had below league-average offense at catcher and third base.  I think Encarnacion will be fine, so one need might be to upgrade over Ross behind the plate.  Would it make sense to acquire Michael Barrett for peanuts, to see if he can retu...

Reds Still Searching For A Starter
2007-12-17 05:20:00
John Fay writes of the Reds' continued search for a starting pitcher.  That's Wayne Krivsky's focus; his main limitation is that Jay Bruce is untouchable. The Reds couldn't get Dan Haren because they wouldn't give up young starter Johnny Cueto.  The focus remains on Erik Bedard; the Reds seem willing to offer Homer Bailey as a starting point.  Fay indicates that the Dodgers lead for Bedard, which is odd given their current six-deep rotation. I have a feeling the hot stove is going to turn to Joe Blanton now.  The Reds may be in the thick of it, especially if they'd give up Bailey for him.  What do you think, would that be a wise move? showad();

MLB Rumor: Erik Bedard To The Cincinnati Reds
2007-12-10 22:52:00
I just heard on XM Radios's "MLB Homeplate" that a Reds insider is 75% sure the Reds will deal Josh Hamilton, Homer Bailey and Joey Votto to the Baltimore Orioles for Erik Bedard.  The sources' estimation of likelihood seems to be as big a question as the offer itself. This would be a HR for the Orioles, who seem unlikely to be competitive in the two years they will have Bedard under contract.  Hamilton, Bailey and Votto are ready to play right now and would give the O's 17 years of control. At least there won't be any complaining about Reds manager Dusty Baker retarding the development of three young players.  Scott Hatteberg rejoice!
Dontrelle For Josh Hamilton Was Discussed
2007-12-07 18:27:00
MLB.com's Joe Frisaro posted a new column last night full of good Marlins hot stove chatter. The most interesting note is that the Marlins talked to the Reds about swapping Dontrelle Willis for Josh Hamilton, prior to the blockbuster with Detroit.  With Miguel Cabrera, the White Sox and Rangers were involved during the Meetings before the Tigers jumped in.  The Rangers backed out when they couldn't get an extension window for Cabrera.  The Tigers wanted the same but obviously it wasn't the dealbreaker.  The Angels, Dodgers, and Giants were involved before the Meetings, with the Giants offering Noah Lowry. Frisaro says there are "strong indications the Marlins will sign Jorge Cantu.  He'll be in the mix at third base. The Fish are offering the Phils Scott Nestor for Wes Helms, who'd also compete at the hot corner. The Mets have some interest in Alfredo Amezaga, though the Marlins are inclined to keep him. Miguel Olivo will be released soon, so thro...
Odds and Ends: Guillen, Crede, Hamilton, Boone
2007-12-05 21:06:00
Rounding up some of the day's random rumors and tidbits... Jose Guillen might get a light suspension for his exploits. There was a report that the Brewers were close to obtaining Joe Crede, but it was published last night. The BBWAA approved a new resolution for 2013.  Any player with a contract provision linked to a major award of theirs will not be considered for that award.  Makes sense - to repeat Curt Schilling's situation.  Curt Schilling could get a million bucks by netting one Cy Young vote in 2008.  The BBWAA would rather preserve its right to have members make off-the-wall votes on occasion without bribery being accused. The Reds traded Buck Coats to the Jays.  They also released Jorge Cantu.  They now have an open spot on the 40-man roster. Could the Rays re-acquire Josh Hamilton?  There's speculation on the topic in Nashville. Buster Olney says Aaron Boone interests the Giants, Nationals, and Brewers. showad();
Odds and Ends: Cliff Lee, Edwin Jackson
2007-12-04 17:52:00
You know the drill... Nick Piecoro checks in on his blog.  Apparently the D'Backs discussed swapping Carlos Quentin for Cliff Lee before sending him to Chicago.  As much as he might've liked to it seems like Josh Byrnes couldn't get a starter for Quentin. Geoff Baker links the Mariners to Lee,  Ben Sheets, Mark Prior, and Edwin Jackson based on yesterday's buzz.  The Sheets one has since been questioned, since the Dodgers were identified as the West Coast team that inquired.  Prior could be part of a Raul Ibanez trade, but the Cubs are first focusing on Fukudome.  As for Jackson, the Rays would want more than just Ben Broussard. John Fay believes the Reds will have to part with Jay Bruce or Homer Bailey to get a frontline starter. showad();

Thoughts On The Cordero Signing
2007-11-24 17:25:00
The only thing between Francisco Cordero and a massive four-year, $46MM deal with the Reds is a physical.  John Fay notes that the Reds are taking payroll up past $80MM, $5MM more than he'd previously speculated.  Might the Reds take it even higher to add a Carlos Silva type?  They could always backload a contract, too. The Brewers have to be annoyed that their two Type A free agent relievers signed with protected 2008 first-round picks.  What's worse, Cordero improves one of their direct competitors. We can talk about Cordero being overpaid, about how he'll earn $165K per inning.  But at least the Reds acknowledged that David Weathers isn't the shut-down arm you want in the ninth inning. The Cordero signing helps, but the team's biggest need remains unaddressed.  Reds' starters posted a 5.10 ERA in 2007, worst in the NL.  I like Arroyo and Harang at the top, and don't mind Belisle/Bailey/Cueto at the back.  Add a solid starter and it'...
Cordero reaches preliminary deal with the Cincinnati Reds

Francisco Cordero has reportedly reached a preliminary agreement on a four-year contract with the Cincinnati Reds. The contract is reportedly $46 million. Reds In Serious Talks With Cordero
2007-11-23 18:52:00
Ken Rosenthal is reporting that the Reds have approached closer Francisco Cordero, and that the two sides are working towards a deal. This would figure to top the Brewers current offer of four years, $42 million. This would be a major step for a team that finished 18 games below .500 in baseball's worst division in 2007. According to Rosenthal, the Reds have emerged as front runners. Competing are the Brewers and a mystery team, possibly the Yankees, who expressed interest in Cordero if Mariano Rivera bolted town. The closer has since returned, though, likely eliminating the Yankees from consideration. The Astros are also believed to be interested in Cordero, though the same can be said for about 80 percent of the free agent market. This would move David Weathers back to a setup role, where he would fit in well. The Reds bullpen would still be weak, but at least they'd improve on their league-worst 54.8 percent save conversion rate. It appears that the Reds front office believes...

Reds Have Roughly $6MM To Spend?
2007-11-11 03:44:00
Reds beat writer John Fay takes his guess at the team's 2008 payroll: around $75MM.  By his estimate, their current players will tie up $69MM of that.  That would leave just $6MM to spend on free agents this winter, unless someone is traded to clear payroll. The Reds' need is pitching, both of the starting and relieving variety.  Carlos Silva would be a nice addition to the rotation.  If Wayne Krivsky is creative with the contract he could probably sign him for 4/40 and still stay around $75MM for '08. Joe Christensen recently reported on the teams interested in Silva, but the Reds weren't one of them.  He listed the Mets, Phillies, Royals, and Tigers.  My money is on the Mets or Phillies.  showad();

Mets Acquire Conine
2007-08-20 22:19:00
UPDATE: According to Ken Rosenthal, the Mets are on the verge of getting Conine for two low-level minor leaguers. According to Ben Shpigel of the New York Times, the Mets might consider trading for Reds outfielder Jeff Conine.  The need was created when Damion Easley endured a Grade 3 ankle sprain. Conine, 41, has about $480K left on his contract this year.  He's known to have cleared waivers, and I'm sure he can be had for a song.
Nats Just Messing With Reds On Dunn?
2007-08-03 16:46:00
John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer has an interesting tidbit today: did Jim Bowden engage Wayne Krivsky in talks about Adam Dunn just to string him along and waste his time?  Fay's source says Bowden never intended to trade for Dunn, but strung Krivsky along in some sort of childish maneuver. The Reds still have a pending grievance regarding reliever Gary Majewski, who they believe was damaged goods when they received him.  Is bad blood lingering, or can the two clubs play nice? Chris Needham doesn't buy Fay's story.
Reds Acquire Jorge Cantu
2007-07-29 03:10:00
In a minor move, the Reds acquired infielder Jorge Cantu today along with outfielder Shaun Cumberland.  They shipped pitchers Calvin Medlock and Brian Shackelford to the Devil Rays in the deal. The Reds are doing the right thing by sending the 24 year-old Cantu to Triple A to re-establish himself.  Yes, he once drove in 117 runs and blah blah blah.  The power potential is nice; he now needs to keep his head down, maybe learn a little plate discipline, and hit his way into the Reds' lineup.  There's no infield spot for him, unless Wayne Krivsky foolishly trades Edwin Encarnacion or just starts Cantu over EE. Cumberland is a legitimate prospect, though the 23 year-old didn't step up to the challenge of Double A.  He's got the tools to succeed, and he was never going to crack the Devil Rays' outfield.  There's some upside here even if the numbers don't show it. I don't know much about Medlock but the reliever posted sick numbers in his second crack...

Unconfirmed Rumor: Cubs Looking At Griffey, Dunn
2007-07-27 23:35:00
Didn't hear the report myself, but a loyal reader dropped me an email. Apparently a recent Bruce Levine report for ESPN Radio 1000 had some interesting Cubs rumors.  Levine says the Cubs might try to trade for Adam Dunn or Ken Griffey Jr.  Any deal would likely include Sean Gallagher, and the Cubs called up Matt Murton today to showcase him. This rumor leaves more questions than answers: Would the Cubs again move their superstar signing Alfonso Soriano to center or right field to create a spot for Dunn? If not, how ugly would Dunn be in right field at Wrigley?  He hasn't played the position regularly since 2001. With the management situation in flux, could the Cubs really take on Griffey's contract, which runs through 2008?  Or even the $3.8MM still owed to Dunn this year? Are Arby's new popcorn chicken shakers as tasty as they look on TV? Would Gallagher and Murton be enough for either of those players?
Jay Bruce : 2007 Major Leaguer?
2007-07-26 21:05:00
Jay Bruce : 2007 Major Leaguer?     The 12th overall pick of the June 2005 draft out of West Brook high school, Jay Bruce has torn through the minors this season and has a legitimate chance at playing in the Reds outfield before the season is out. After just 67 games in High A this season, Bruce was aggressively promoted to AA Charlotte of the Southern League by the Reds organization. It was reasonable to expect Bruce to spend the rest of the season in AA and make a jump to AAA for the start of the 2008 season. Jay however, had other plans. In only 16 games, Bruce smacked out 12 extra base hits, 15 RBI and a .405 average. This prompted the Reds to send Bruce up yet again, allowing him to accomplish the somewhat rare feat of playing in three highest minor league levels in the same season. In 13 games in AAA Louisville, Bruce has a .644 slugging percentage, and 7 extra base hits. For the year he?s hitting a combined .319/.379/.604 between all three levels, with 35 doubles, 8 triples ...
Mariners Watching Starters
2007-07-26 17:04:00
UPDATE: Hickey writes that the Mariners have also scouted Kyle Lohse, Matt Morris, Jason Johnson (thought he went to Japan), and Octavio Dotel.  However, a deal seems unlikely because none of those players are worth top Mariner prospects. According to Jim Hickey of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, the Mariners have been scouting all kinds of available and not-so-available starters lately. The Mariners have been scouting the White Sox "religiously" lately.  If they saw Javier Vazquez beat the Tigers on Tuesday, they came away impressed.  (However, Vazquez can and probably would veto a trade to the AL or NL West).  They were on hand to watch Jose Contreras tonight; the Tigers had batting practice with him and his ERA is up to 6.22.  Did you hear that?  That was the sound of Contreras' remaining ounce of trade value evaporating. As you know, the Ms watched Dontrelle Willis on Monday.  Compared to Contreras, Willis pitched well - four earned ...
Unfounded Rumor: Mariners Scout Weathers?
2007-07-26 16:34:00
An MLBTR reader had good seats at last night's Reds game, and he observed about eight scouts watching.  Specifically, he saw a Seattle Mariners scout.  Apparently the scout got pretty active when David Weathers took the hill.  This is reasonable; the Ms are known to be looking for bullpen help.    Weathers picked up a two-inning save last night.  He's having a surprisingly strong year, with some of the best control of his career.  His contract runs through 2008, when he will make $2.75MM.  However, Will Carroll wrote yesterday that the Reds want to keep Weathers and trade Todd Coffey instead. Another reason eight scouts might have been watching last night's Reds-Brewers contest: Kyle Lohse started.  He wasn't too bad, allowing two runs (one earned) in 5.2 innings.  The Mariners seem to be monitoring quite a few starters so it wouldn't surprise me if they had an eye on Lohse.

Latest From Baseball Prospectus: Jacque, Snell
2007-07-23 18:17:00
Will Carroll and John Perrotto have teamed up at BP to join the rumor mill, and yesterday's post is free to nonsubscribers.  Some highlights: Carroll reports that the Cubs could swap Jacque Jones and a prospect for Jeff Conine.  Perhaps such a move would be in tandem with Adam Dunn leaving Cincinnati.  The Cubs might want to hold on to Jones though; he's playing well lately. Carroll heard a far out Alex Rodriguez to the Dodgers rumor, but doesn't buy it.  Neither do I - the Yankees don't seem to be selling.  Carroll says Brian Cashman and Co. will wait until the last second to make a buyer/seller decision.  There's a slight chance Jorge Posada becomes available if they choose the latter. Perrotto confirms a rumor that surfaced a week ago, that Ian Snell could be had for the right bat.  Perrotto would know, as he spent time as a Pirates' beat writer.  Jarrod Saltalamacchia or Matt Kemp are two possible targets for the Bucs. The Tigers may...
Melvin On The Dunn Rumor
2007-07-20 22:34:00
Brewers GM Doug Melvin had a funny comment on yesterday's bogus Adam Dunn to Milwaukee rumor: "I'm taking more calls deflecting these kinds of rumors than I've had talking to GMs.  There are freaking geeks who get...off on this kind of stuff." How did this game of telephone get started?  According to Mark Sheldon at MLB.com, a Cincinnati radio guy posted the trade as a rumor on his blog, and then apparently Sportsradio 1250 in Milwaukee announced it as a completed deal.  ESPN then picked up that radio report, but killed the rumor after Jerry Crasnick spoke to Melvin.
