My ongoing research into digital cinema aesthetics and the visual language evolutions brought about by technological shifts is now finding its way into solid written form. But whilst academic frameworks may force me into old-school paper and print there seemed no reason not to explore and present some of the thesis ideas in a new media format. So what will be presented here over coming months are work-in-progress podcasts looking at progressive chapter extracts.Part1, entitled Cinematic Problematic sets off by seeking to understand the core pillars of cinematic thinking - mise en scene and montage - and poke a theoretical stick at them to see where the cracks are in the context of digital cinema.Download the podcast here

Next to Death Cab's Narrow Stairs, the forthcoming debut EP by Cinematic Sunrise is my most anticipated release of 2008. The world has thrown much applause at this years game release of Bioshock. And certainly I have been amoung those cheering most loudly. The accolades come on many levels - from the exquistie sound design and score, the vibrantly imaginative design, clever and poetic writing and the superb acting and performances. Yes, this is a game and the game play is extremely good but what makes it reall special is the 'experience' it creates and that experience is driven by its sense of the cinematic - of drama, tension, action, poetry and character all building towards that most powerful of cienmatic qualities - MOOD.Well it seems even the marketing of Bioshock has been able to tap superbly into that mood as this advert for Bioshock showing off the written compliments paid to it by journalists, shows.
