2009-09-18 21:45:00
I found out today that starting Oct. 21, San Franciscans will be required to have 3 bins: garbage, recycling ... and compost.Yes, you read that right. Residents will have to throw their food scraps into the compost bin or face a fine. Yet Chicago ranks No. 1 in green--buildings, at least. A good start, Mayor Daley, but why don't we start with the simple stuff first?Need some help? Here are 4 cities that Chicago could learn from....

Tail of two cities: Sex Worker Literati
2009-08-16 01:35:00
Photo by ExpatJaneI've never been a sex worker. The closest I got was getting someone to pay me $5 for making out with a straight girl in college. Now I do that all the time, but oddly, no one wants to fork over any Benjamins for my efforts. But I am something of a sex worker groupie, in that I am continually amazed and inspired by their stories, their perseverance and the occasional yeast infection remedy they provide me. Last week, when I was on "vacation" (bloggers don't get real vacations) in New York, I was lucky enough to catch Sex Worker Literati, a new reading and performance series hosted by Audacia Ray and David Henry Sterry on the first...

Stock Market Commentary: Tale of Two Cities
2009-05-11 23:08:00
For Large Caps it was a hasty retreat but for Tech not much happened. Large Caps stayed on course to reach their 200-day MAs as Tech averages struggled to hold theirs. Most worryingly, the Semiconductor Index, having breached rising support from March lows now finished Monday below its 200-day MA. The Semicondutor index is now looking at the 50-day MA for support. This creeping weakness has impacted on the Nasdaq and Nasdaq 100 with the MACD trigger 'sells' in the aforementioned indices. The Dow is lagging nearly all of the key indices but has now started to outperform Tech markets even on the back of Monday's down day.Look for further cycling of money out of Tech into the relative safety of Large Caps over the next couple of weeks.Dr. Declan Fallon, Senior Market Technician, Zignals.com the free stock alerts, stock charts, watchlist, multi-currency portfolio manager and strategy builder website. And though I might quibble a bit about the ranking of China's cities, I cannot think of even one that was unfairly left out. ...

Twin Cities, Prove Your Love to Me

Tonight I'm getting on a red-eye flight to Minnesota (because of this and this), and I am fully prepared for everything Minneapolis and its surrounding areas have to offer. You see, I've been doing lots of research on the state, I've been re-watching Fargo, and I've been spinning Prince (the musician Prince, not myself) nonstop. I now practically have Minnesota blood pumping through my veins! I could have even more if I ever find out where all the hookers hang out?a cursory Google search on "Minneapolis hookers" turns up slim pickings. Hey, Minneapolis, where your hos at?!You ask, "Hey, Prince [me], what's your favorite Prince [musician] song from his last album that nobody heard, Planet Earth?" I'm glad you asked. The lovely "Resolution" brings the funktastic album to a smooth end. Listen (it's mis-titled in the imeem player, by the way):
Sea water inundates parts of Indonesia's capital
2008-06-04 10:49:00
Sea water inundated parts of Indonesia's capital overnight, flooding homes in the north of the city with up to 70 centimetres (2.3 feet) of water, officials said Wednesday. However, the waters, which poured into homes despite reinforced defences, were less severe than authorities expected, a North Jakarta public works official who identified himself as Eko told AFP.The World Bank last week warned that the peak of an 18-year astronomical tide cycle would combine with storm surges to flood swathes of the capital, as well as shutting off the toll road to the city's international airport. The airport road was untouched by the surging water and the early warning allowed the public works authority and residents to reinforce defences with makeshift sandbag and stone barriers, Eko said"We had been anticipating the high tides and warned people in flood-prone areas in North Jakarta to prepare for the floods caused by the high tides," Eko said. The peak of the flooding hit between 9.00 pm (1400...
