Monocle?s Top 25 Liveable Cities
2008-07-07 18:05:00 I just arrived in Singapore for a two-day trip in the eponymous city, to be followed by Bangkok, Thailand. The 17 hours United Airlines flight with connection in Narita gave me the opportunity to pour through Monocle's issue 15, volume 02, and its fantastic list of Top 25 Liveable Cities. Interestingly enough, the Phase I & II development plan for Monolab|Workspace (16 locations) includes 7 of Monocle's favorite destinations. Phase III & IV will extend the list to 64 locations, and every single one of them is on Monocle's list (extended with 5 challengers). [Continue...]

Twin Cities, Prove Your Love to Me
2008-06-04 20:02:00 Tonight I'm getting on a red-eye flight to Minnesota (because of this and this), and I am fully prepared for everything Minneapolis and its surrounding areas have to offer. You see, I've been doing lots of research on the state, I've been re-watching Fargo, and I've been spinning Prince (the musician Prince, not myself) nonstop. I now practically have Minnesota blood pumping through my veins! I could have even more if I ever find out where all the hookers hang out?a cursory Google search on "Minneapolis hookers" turns up slim pickings. Hey, Minneapolis, where your hos at?!You ask, "Hey, Prince [me], what's your favorite Prince [musician] song from his last album that nobody heard, Planet Earth?" I'm glad you asked. The lovely "Resolution" brings the funktastic album to a smooth end. Listen (it's mis-titled in the imeem player, by the way):

Sea water inundates parts of Indonesia's capital
2008-06-04 10:49:00 Sea water inundated parts of Indonesia's capital overnight, flooding homes in the north of the city with up to 70 centimetres (2.3 feet) of water, officials said Wednesday. However, the waters, which poured into homes despite reinforced defences, were less severe than authorities expected, a North Jakarta public works official who identified himself as Eko told AFP.The World Bank last week warned that the peak of an 18-year astronomical tide cycle would combine with storm surges to flood swathes of the capital, as well as shutting off the toll road to the city's international airport. The airport road was untouched by the surging water and the early warning allowed the public works authority and residents to reinforce defences with makeshift sandbag and stone barriers, Eko said"We had been anticipating the high tides and warned people in flood-prone areas in North Jakarta to prepare for the floods caused by the high tides," Eko said. The peak of the flooding hit between 9.00 pm (1400...

A musical tour of Cuban cities with Beny More.
2008-05-31 00:05:00 **updated** Map of Cuba, pre-revolution, with its original provinces: Pinar del Rio, La Habana, Matanzas, Las Villas, Camaguey, Oriente. Beny More loved Cuba. I can arrive at such a conclusion through simple deduction: People devote their energy and try to be close to what they love. Beny More left a lucrative career in Mexican music and film to return to Cuba (foot-vote). He also stayed in Cuba after the revolution of 1959 while many of the best Cuban singers, like Celia Cruz, left. Beny More sang about Cuba- alot. Many singers sang about Cuba in general and some sang about cities, but Beny is the only one who paid musical tribute to more than one city. Not only that, but he often gave those non-universal and potentially less lucrative tribute songs his best melodies and music. Therefore, Beny More loved Cuba. With that in mind, let's take a tour of Cuba with Beny as our guide. You can get the albums below. All aboard the Guagua (autobus for my non-Cuban brothers): Read more ...

Indonesian capital prepares for extreme tidal waves
2008-05-30 13:24:00 The Indonesian capital Jakarta is in a state of alert anticipating a high tide that will likely hit the city next week, causing floods in parts of the city, officials said on Friday."We are aware of the situation and have built up higher retaining walls and put sand bags in areas that will likely be hit by the tidal wave," said Wisnu Subagio head of Jakarta's office of public works. He said that most likely north Jakarta and the highway to the airport would be affected. 2008-05-30 12:45:00 If you're short of cash and don't mind running in tropical humidity and smog for a few bucks, read on. An Indonesian businessman plans to throw 100 million rupiah (S$14,485) out of an airplane over the capital this Sunday as a publicity stunt to promote his new book. 'I want to create a rain of money in Jakarta,' author and motivational speaker Tung Desem Waringin said. 'It's a little bit crazy, but it's marketing.' Police spokesman Colonel I Ketut Untung said authorities may not allow the plan to go forward because it could draw huge crowds and cause chaos. Tens of millions of Indonesians live on less than US$1 a day and food and aid giveaways always draw large numbers. Indonesia News Blog: http://indosnesos.blogspot.com-

...Two Cities
2008-05-29 16:15:00 So, you've decided to take the job that leaves your partner thousands of miles away working on their career. It's not a relationship-ender - trust me, I've done it and I'll be celebrating my 15th wedding anniversary this year. Here's what I've learned about making it work:- Avoid open-ended separations. Before you part, put a date in the diary for when you'll next be together. It gives you something to look forward to, rather than keeping you focused on what you're missing. Have a broader time-line in place for assessing the separation, as well. It's good to have milestones in place where you can discuss how your living conditions are helping you meet your couple goals and career goals, and to plan what might need to happen next.- Stay positive. Whether you're the one going to the new city or the one staying put, it's easy to feel lonely and like the other person is having an easier time of it (they're not, I've been on both sides of this coin and they're equally as har...

World Bank warns flood may hit Jakarta
2008-05-29 12:21:00 The World Bank warned Thursday that an exceptionally high tide could inundate the Indonesian capital next week, forcing thousands of people to flee homes and cutting off the highway to the international airport. The situation - exasperated by global warming and the fact that Jakarta is sinking up to 2 inches a year - could mean flooding will exceed last November's roof-high levels in the hardest-hit areas, said Hongjoo Hahm, the bank's infrastructure expert."This is just the beginning," he said, as he pointed to homes reaching a mile inland that will likely be affected Tuesday and Wednesday by the 18-year semiannual tide cycle. "It's getting worse and worse."Indonesia, a sprawling archipelago nation, is one of the world's largest contributors of carbon dioxide emissions, thanks to the rapid pace of deforestation. But experts say the country is also at risk of becoming one of the biggest victims of climate change.Rising sea waters especially pose a threat to coastal cities like Ja...

Sunda Kelapa ideal for world-class port

In his book Palapa Nusantara 2015: Kebangkitan Semangat Wawasan Bahari Jakarta (Palapa Nusantara 2015: The Awakening of Jakarta's Maritime Vision), Martono's vision of the waterfront includes an art academy, riverside shops, apartments and an office park. "Indonesia is known as the biggest maritime country in the world. Because of that, I'm offering a project called the Sunda Kelapa Waterfront to the government, especially to the Jakarta administration, to be the country's future main port," said Martono, also an official at the Jakarta Tourism Agency, at the book's launch Sunday. Radical approach to cities rethinks the urban myths
2008-05-27 10:22:00 Some interesting studies from AA for your browsing pleasure."But in some ways its radicalism in design is becoming mannered and predictable. A high percentage of the work here seems locked into a narcissistic logic that cannot stop producing the same architectural bling of distorted nets, abstract grids and curvy blobs. Although this is all drawn and modelled to an incredibly high standard, it is reiterative. But the work on cities is strong, inspiring, and authentically radical." to find out more...Passage & Image from http://www.bdonline.co.uk/story-.asp?storycode=3091651

Cities Working Against Themselves in the Battle Against Foreclosures
2008-05-24 18:48:00 Minneapolis on the Decline: A Case Study I have been following a fraud case that the city of Minneapolis has played a major role in. To be more exact, the Minneapolis City Council has been a driving force behind it. North Minneapolis has long been considered a high crime area and that part of Minneapolis is why the city has been nick-named ?Murderapolis.? The foreclosure rate in the city has been setting new foreclosure records on a monthly basis and the abandoned houses that are left behind has caused a serious epidemic for the city to contend with. Minneapolis is losing residents?Fast. The city has been very vocal with their efforts to get owner-occupied people to buy houses there to help solidify the city and rebuild the communities there. Most of the abandoned houses there have had the windows and doors boarded up to keep squatters from claiming a temporary place to stay. Even the city has acknowledged that the ?squatters? are mostly ?crack users? and with them comes the crime...
Indonesia monorail scheme 'implausible' - World Bank
2008-05-23 12:14:00 A long-delayed plan to privately fund a monorail to ease congestion in Indonesia's traffic-choked capital is "completely implausible", the World Bank said here Friday. The plan to build the 27-kilometre (17 miles) network entirely with private sector money would be impossible, with the costs of running the scheme meaning heavy losses, the Bank's infrastructure specialist Hongjoo Hahm told Agence France-Presse.Hahm said a revised Bank study completed this week based on figures supplied by private firm PT Jakarta Monorail found that major government investment would be needed for the scheme to be feasible."We're saying (to the Jakarta city government) don't get your eyes glazed over by private sector guys that are trying to sell you something completely implausible," Hahm said. The Bank's findings, which were passed to Jakarta Governor Fauzi Bowo Thursday, are the latest major blow to the beleaguered scheme, which has been delayed amid uncertainty over funding.Indonesia News Blog: ...

Supply of office space across Indian cities has exceeded demand
2008-05-16 08:12:00 With little supply in the central business district, Bangalore, India?s information technology hub, saw the highest demand for office space in the first quarter of 2008 at 5.14 million sq. ft. It was followed by the National Capital Region (NCR), comprising New Delhi and its satellite cities, with 2.2 million sq. ft. A report says though the demand for office space remained upbeat at 14 million sq. ft across India?s cities; around 15.54 million sq. ft of supply has come into the market in the same quarter. In both NCR and Bangalore, much of the limited supply was a result of large pre-commitments in 2007 that were delivered in the first three months of this year. The demand in Bangalore has been spurred by a number of new aero-engineering and logistics companies here. The problem here is, with huge demand for Grade A office space in prime areas and little supply, there is a problem of oversupply in peripheral areas like Whitefield and Marathahalli. In Mumbai 11% of the total project...
