Citrus Fueled Sports Car Could Freshen Up The Future of Automotive Design
2009-06-19 23:03:00
While many people are focused on redesigning our tried and true internal combustion engine, others are more interested in improving the fuel source we use in them. Most of these people are content trying to alter our current sources of fuel, but a few like to step off the beaten path. There are no better examples of this than the designers of the Stauro Concept.
Soup of the week: Spiced citrus bean soup
2009-03-03 10:44:00
This is my 6th post for Debbie's Souper SundayWhen I asked my sons to make up the menu plan for weekdays, I expected not to deal with it any more. Far wrong, the weekly soup is still my business. This week I served the Spiced citrus bean soup The young gentlemen agreed to my choice. Instead of using a can of mixed beans I soaked 250 grams of an Italian pulse mixture (red, white and green beans, lentils, chickpeas, green and yellow split peas, broad beans) over night in water and cooked it 6 h on low in a 3,5 l slow cooker. And of course I used a coriander-parsley mixture to scatter over the soup. -=========REZKONV-Recipe - RezkonvSuite v1.4Title: Spiced citrus bean soupCategories: Soup, VegetarianYield: 4 Servings Ingredients 2tablesp. Olive oil2  Onions, sliced450grams Carrots, roughly chopped, 1 lb1tablesp. Garam masala   Finger-length of fresh root ginger, grated1  Orange, the juice1liter Vegetable stock, 1 3/4 pints200ml Can reduced-fat coconut milk410grams Can m...

Sunshine Citrus Chicken and Eggplant Fritters???
2008-06-07 19:45:00
Eggplant Fritters with Sunshine Citrus Chicken!Yesterday was the last day of school for this year. The girls were both super excited and so was I. I actually love the slower pace that we are able to enjoy in the ungodly hot months of June, July and August. We seem to be in our summer weather pattern already too (torrential rain and horrific thunderstorms every afternoon) which really inhibits what we can do later in the day. Of course we will still have the ice skating lesson 3 or 4 times a week and karate but at least it won't be so hectic. I also really am able to appreciate that I stay home with the girls. I love that we are able to spend a whole summer together getting to know one another!Fresh Ginger - the skin hadn't even dried out yet!Anyway for dinner last night I bought some boneless, skinless, chicken thighs (organic, free range, no antibiotics or hormones of course) and I marinated them in my Sunshine Citrus Marinade (I had some really old oranges and some really...

Citrus And Cardamom Rum Babas
2008-05-26 06:52:00
I have been under a shower of SHF citrus entries this past week and although I need to (happily) bathe in over 100 entries in the coming days, nothing would make me happier. Thank you in advance to all of you who participated and remember I will accept a few stragglers if you come to the party with an extra box of lemon sour candies! Before I proceed with these lovely Rum Babas, I need to announce the winner of the Cherry Blossom Extract: Congratulations to Suzana of Home Gourmets ! Please email me with your mailing address so both Rachael and I can get the 2 bottles on your way. When I was little, I loved going with my mom to the bakery in town after church on Sundays, helping her select the little mini pastries that would end up on a dessert tray after lunch at my grandparent's. There always was a selection of different flavored eclairs and cream puffs, a couple of mini fruit tarts and Napoleons and a couple of mini rum babas. I used to repeat that name on the way there and on th...

CITRUS MAKES ME HAPPY...TANGY FRESH LIME CAKE
2008-05-20 03:12:00
Anytime the perfume of orange and lemon groves wafts in the window; the human body has to feel suffused with a languorous well-being."Frances Mayes, Bella Tuscany CITRUS is Tartelettes' chosen flavour for this months' edition of Sugar High Fridays , a monthly event created by Jennifer of The Domestic Goddess. One of my favourite flavours, I find myself using 'citrus' , mostly lime, every single day, in one way or another. No day is complete with a squirt of lemon, or a splash of orange. It's quite amazing how international a flavour citrus is. We're talking marinades, salad dressings, desserts, chutneys, cookies, cakes, sauces, pickles, preserves...the list seems endless. For me, it's fascinating to find CITRUS in so many avatars in blog land...lemon preserves in Moroccan stew@ Mike's Table, pretty Lemon Madeleines @ Tartlettes, Marinada Davita @ Familia bencomo, Lime Green Chili Pickle @ Konkan World, Orange & Asparagus Salad @ No Special Effects, Candy Ravioli in Orang...
SHF #43: Citrus - Lemon Yoghurt Ice Cream
2008-05-14 00:00:00
Helen of Tartelette chose citrus for the 43 rd edition of Sugar High Friday. Last weekend we already had summer in Northern Germany. And like ice in the sunshine the familiy was melting away on a sunny day. So I prepared a refreshing Lemon Yoghurt Ice Cream It's easy to prepare and if you have an ice cream maker with compressor you are only 50 minutes from your ice cream away! Just mix together 600 g greek yoghurt, 90 ml lemon juice, 160 g cream and 100 g sugar together and give it into your ice cream maker. Follow the instructions and refreshment is waiting. Announcing Sugar High Friday #43: Citrus!
2008-05-05 02:02:00
I love reading the archives of Sugar High Friday, the monthly event created by Jennifer of The Domestic Goddess . Imagine recipe upon recipe dedicated to sweets, months after months, year after year....all at the click of button. While browsing one night last February, I noticed that the blog hosting SHF citrus way back when three years ago did no longer exist. It must have been really late in the night because I found myself emailing Jennifer telling her that if she was interested in a citrus theme again, that I'd love hosting it. I had heard that the list of future hosts was close to a year long so I put that thought to rest until she emailed back later that week and offered that I host in May...this year! Yippeee! Why "Citrus"? The simplest answer I have is that after chocolate (or right alongside), citruses are my favorite flavors. Lemons, lime, oranges, tangerines, clementines, mandarines, grapefruits, kumquats,...you name it, I dig it. I know that this does not apply to everyb...
Citrus Fruits And Their Benefit For Weight Loss
2008-05-03 06:26:00
All we know that citrus fruits are very healthy. They are said to have the power to fight life-threatening diseases such as cancer, obesity, and high cholesterol. In this post, I only write about the benefit of citrus fruits for weight loss: burn fat and suppress appetite. Citrus Fruits help to burn fatCitrus fruits such as oranges, grapefruit, tangerines, lemons, and limes contain high concentrations of Vitamin C (this is also called ascorbic acid). This Vitamin C has a fat burning quality.Vitamin C reduces the effectiveness of fat. It reduces its content and can liquefy or dilute fat. By diluting the fat, it makes it less effective, and easier to flush out of your system. Vitamin C also works on cholesterol deposits. Vitamin C can help burn out the cholesterol, hence, making it difficult for cholesterol deposits to form in blood vessels.Citrus Fruits suppress appetiteAppetite seems a vicious obstacle when you are on diet. Citrus Fruits are high in fiber and water content so that t...

Product Review of OXO Good Grips Citrus Squeezer
2008-03-31 03:12:00
We all want to get the most out of our citrus fruits, which usually means squishing them until we?ve gotten every drop of juice. Some people recommend that you microwave your lemon for a few moments or roll it on the counter, but when it comes right down to it, you still need an effective way to remove the juice. An electronic juicer would work fine, but they aren?t cost effective if you only squeeze the occasional lemon. A traditional reamer is generally efficient, but it?s not an easy tool to use for those with exhaustion or joint issues, and it doesn?t catch the seeds. As it turns out, the newest product on the market has proven to be the most functional and intelligent. Click to read more ...
IFRA proposes restrictions on use of citrus oils
2008-03-26 21:25:00
We all like to jump on perfume houses that reformulate our favorite perfumes into banality, but all too frequently they are simply complying with new regulations. Ready for more bad news? IFRA (the International Fragrance Association) has now proposed restrictions on the use of citrus oils in cosmetics and perfumes. You can read a summary of the original proposal at Furanocoumarins in cosmetics ? worrying developments at the Aromaconnection blog, and a more detailed response from Cropwatch (an "independent watchdog for endangered and vulnerable natural aromatic products") can be found at IFRA moves towards forcing perfumers to abandon citrus oils at Anya's Garden. Please feel free to comment, but I haven't done more than skim the articles linked to above and I haven't the patience to do more than that, nor can I comment on the science behind the various claims. But regardless of how you feel about synthetic aroma materials, it is very sad to watch the slow disappearance of natura...

Some Jason, Citrus Magic and Alba Products Contain a Toxic Ingredient, 1,4
2008-03-17 04:22:00
Just when you thought that you were buying nice, happy, not chemically laden, better for the earth products, here comes this news. Turns out that a study released by the Organic Consumers Association revealed a toxic carcinogenic contaminant called 1,4 Dioxane (no, I don't know why there is a comma between the numbers) is in many popular brands of body washes, dish soap, and lotions that are labeled "natural" and "organic". And up until now, the presence of this toxin in these products has been undisclosed. So no matter how good you were about checking labels for ingredients, you would never have known this was in anything. Great.Interestingly, products that were certified USDA organic did not contain this toxin, whereas many products that are not certified organic did contained it. Other studies of conventional mainstream products have shown the presence of 1,4 Dioxane before, but this is the first study to implicate brands that claim to be "natural" or "organic". According ...
Thyme, oregano and citrus-roasted chicken
2008-03-11 21:08:00
Another chicken recipe for you and it's another from Diana Henry as well! After the amazing success of the Roast Chicken With Picada recipe I splurged and bought the book, Crazy Water, Pickled Lemons. The book is a collection of recipes from the middle East, North Africa and the Mediterranean, such as Khoresh, a stew from Persia that uses oranges and fruit to flavour it, or how about the unusual but delicious sounding stuffed figs with chocolate. There are some fantastic pictures in there as well as brilliant ideas, I can't wait to try the orange cake made with whole pureed oranges. What caught my eye when I first opened the book though was Thyme, oregano and citrus-roasted poussins. The stunning colours in the picture made it jump out and I just had to try it. The recipe is simple to follow and is a bit different to how I normally cook, it does call for Poussins but i used chicken legs it it came out great. The chicken is marinated in a mixture of orange and lime zest, as well as th...

Constipation remedy using citrus juice
2008-01-30 00:58:00
Citrus juices are a constipation remedy that is an excellent way to stimulate your colon and other parts of the body. Since your colon is less active at night, drinking juices as soon as you awaken and get up can stimulate strong peristaltic action and promote a bowel movement.Lemons Lemons are filled with minerals, especially potassium, Vitamin C, and bioflavonoids. They have a cleansing action for the entire body.Fresh lemon juice is the king of fruit juices. It contains citric acid, which acts in the body in a way no other juice does. First it acts on the liver to build up its enzymes so it can detoxify toxins in the blood. Then it combines with calcium to form soluble chemical substances. This makes it effective in removing kidney and pancreatic stones, plack build up along artery walls, and other calcium deposits that occur in the body. When the liver, gallbladder, and pancreas are not working right, food digestion is affected. This in turn will create constipation.Use lemons mo...
Citrus Love - Part Un (a.k.a. Daring Bakers' Adventure - January)
2008-01-29 07:33:00
One of these days, I'll get started on my Daring Bakers Challenge the day after the topic is announced - I mean it! I've only done 2 of these so far, but apparently I live on the edge even when it comes to cooking. Seriously, I'm a last-minute adrenaline junkie - proved unequivocally by the fact that I just finished my DBC about 30 minutes ago!Lemon Meringue Pie ...Hmm ... I wasn't sure what I thought of this when I first saw the topic. I love lemons, but most of the lemon desserts I lean towards are a lot lighter - lemon bars, light whipped lemon curd ... and this whole meringue thing sounded a bit daunting. But I got all excited about making tartlets, that's always fun - a bite-sized or one person dessert is usually fun to put together. But then I couldn't find any tartlet pans and today is a heavy snow day ... so that plan was abandoned and I went back to baking a regular pie instead.Jen of The Canadian Baker picked the recipe for this challenge - the more I read it, the mo...

Sunshine Citrus Chicken
2008-01-17 16:56:00
I guess a trend is starting to appear. We have been grilling a lot. There is a reason behind this. We all got a little fluffy (read fat) after the holidays and I find that the easiest way to get the extra weight back off is to eat lean, healthy meals. My method of cooking is not real lean so this is when we rely on the grill to help us out. Lucky for us we live in Florida so we can grill all year long and even if you live up north you can but it is definitely more challenging! The kids have been getting a little tired of the regular old marinades and I happened to have an orange left from the muffins that I made yesterday (which she didn't like anyway!!!) so I knew it was going to be citrus based. Here is basically what I threw together. The measures are just estimates. Not so important for a marinade.Sunshine Citrus ChickenJuice from half and orange1 cup soy sauce (low-sodium if you like!)1 tsp orange zestfresh ground black pepper1/2 tsp ground ginger2 Tbsp Canola Oil4 chic...

'CITRUS' DESSERT CAKE - Happiness is...a burst of FRESH flavour!
2007-12-13 16:38:00
"Ponder well on this point: the pleasant hours of our life are all connected by a more or less tangible link, with some memory of the table. We had my brother-in-law over for dinner the other day, and as usual, I wanted to try something different. Put this together as the day went by with whatever ingredients I had on hand. Must say that DH was very skeptical about this 'experiment' but held his comments fearing an outburst. I can be pretty unpredictable at times, & who knows better than him!! The cake was scrumptious. It tasted a lot like a cheesecake...but wasn't a cheesecake.
