Los Angeles wants to take bite out of fast food
2008-07-29 19:05:00
LOS ANGELES (AP) - In the impoverished neighborhood of South Los Angeles, fast food is the easiest cuisine to find - and that’s a problem for elected officials who see it as an unhealthy source of calories and cholesterol. The City Council was poised to vote Tuesday on a moratorium on new fast-food restaurants in a ...
Decision to Run for Nanaimo City Council
2008-06-12 11:29:00
(this is a copy of a letter to the editor I recently sent to my local papers)It was inspiring to learn that NALT (Nanaimo and Area Land Trust) has made a call for council candidates to address sustainability and environmental issues. After speaking with a number of community members, and with their encouragement and support, I have decided to run for city council. A green development option would be to invest in creating a complete picture for Nanaimo communities, reducing the need for us to go across the city for work or shopping. Devoting lanes to busses and cyclists instead of expanding roads is an effective way to reduce congestion and encourage greener forms of transportation. It?s also less expensive and more sustainable than adding evermore lanes to our roads. I understand that our transit system is considering doubling service within the next decade, but I don?t think we should have to wait that long. The cost savings are considerable for individuals using transit instead o...
Wichita Kansas City Council OKs Smoking Ban, Effective Sept. 2, 2008
2008-06-03 22:22:00
This legislation makes it law that beginning September 2, 2008, smoking will be banned in any business that allows people under the age of 18 to walk into their establishment. I think it is a WONDERFUL step up the healthier lungs for our children's campaign ladder and I hope every city will follow this lead! READ ABOUT THIS HERE
Philadelphia City Council Passes Used Car Lemon Law Bill
2008-05-20 17:43:00
At 1-800-LEMON LAW, we receive countless calls from folks who purchased a used car and ended up being taken for a ride.  Sometimes the car has a salvage title, or it will not pass inspection, or it just falls apart.  Many times, these distressed drivers have little or no protection under the State and Federal Laws we work with. Now, Mayor Nutter’s consumer advocate Lance Haver is working hard to change that in Philadelphia. This past Monday, The Philadelphia City Council has approved a lemon law bill for used cars, and if that bill becomes law, drivers will have 72 hours to get their car checked out by a mechanic following the purchase.  If the car is not drivable, the dealer will either have to fix the problem or allow the consumer to return the car for a full refund.  This is a bill whose time has come, according to Kimmel & Silverman Founding Attorney Craig Thor Kimmel. “In Philadelphia, used car sales occur with greater frequency than in less populated area...

City Council Meeting April 22 ? More Education, Please!
2008-04-18 16:17:00
It’s time to fight for the right to quality education for children in Cranston. New York City Council approves congestion pricing plan
2008-04-02 00:00:00
Big news out of City Hall: Shortly before 7:30 p.m., the New York City Council approved a measure urging state lawmakers to vote in favor of Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg's congestion pricing proposal. The congestion pricing plan, as approved by a 17-member state commission that voted at the end of January, would charge drivers with an E-ZPass $8 a day to enter Manhattan below 60th Street on weekdays from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Those drivers would also receive a credit for bridge or tunnel tolls they paid on the same day. Drivers without an E-ZPass would pay $9 and would not receive credit for tolls. The plan is similar to one proposed by Mayor Bloomberg last April -- but that plan would have established a northern boundary at 86th Street and included a $4 charge for car trips within the congestion zone. The mayor has noted that the city will qualify for $354 million in federal grants for mass transit improvements if congestion pricing is approved. This is great news, said Michael O'L...
FOX 2 News Reports on Lincoln Park?s Hustler Strip Club Scandal

What?s going on with Columbia City Council candidates?
2008-03-07 17:27:00
BOYER, RICKENMANN COMMIT POLITICAL SUICIDE HOURS APART I’m not quite sure if I’ve ever written about the Columbia City Council. I’ve written about other city councils, but to my recollection, nothing about Columbia. Feel free to correct me if I’m wrong, although I’m usually not. It’s not that I don’t care, it’s just that… well, actually yes, I really don’t care. But today I do because, in the last week, the frontrunners for the two contested seats (only three of the six seats are on the ballot this year, and 25-year incumbent E.W. Cromartie didn’t draw a challenger) may have effectively sunk their campaigns with less than a month left in the election. And amazingly, they did so in completely unrelated ways. In the third district race to replace outgoing Councilwoman Anne Sinclair, Brian Boyer had been the candidate to beat for months now. That is, until he and a friend allegedly beat the crap out of a house guest...

NRSC Responds to Anti-Military Berkley City Council

The NRSC created a video that tackles the anti-Military, anti-American Berkley City Council that passed a resolution to kick out a military recruiting station and allowed Code Pink pretty much free reign to harass the recruiters. Marines can stay in Berkeley, without an apology from City Council
2008-02-14 00:54:00
It just keeps getting better folks.  I can't make shit up like this: The Berkeley City Council attempted to make nice with U.S. Marines recruiters early today by taking back a letter it planned to send calling the Corps 'uninvited and unwelcome intruders' in the city. But a motion to formally apologize failed. Yep, sounds just like they are trying to "make nice". At the same time, the council let stand four other items it passed at its previous meeting, including one encouraging "all people to avoid cooperation with the Marine Corps recruiting station," another asking the city attorney to investigate whether the recruiting station is breaking the city's law against discrimination based on sexual orientation and two items giving the peace group Code Pink a free weekly parking space and sound permit to protest at the Shattuck Avenue recruiting station once a week. So, they basically said "we won't look to kick you out and treat you like an enemy, but we'll do everything we...

Gunman Opens Fire at Missouri City Council
2008-02-08 18:47:00
The police department's chaplain, Father Robert Osborne of the local St. Peter Catholic Church, said law enforcers from several agencies quickly voiced anguish to him over the tragedy. "They're all just so sad, shocked by this," Osborne said. "This doesn't happen in Kirkwood." Well Father, it pains me deeply to have to tell you that in our gun-loving country with its gun-loving mentality, it appears that it DOES happen in your beloved Kirkwood, as well as in many other cities and towns all over America. It is long past time for us to address this culture, and those who've been reading my website, already know what I think should occur. READ ABOUT THIS HERE Practice non-violence in your lives. Patriots to Protest Berkeley City Council on February 12th
2008-02-06 08:55:00
Move America Forward - www.MoveAmericaForward.org - is calling on patriotic Americans from near and far to come to Berkeley, California and join us for a protest of the Berkeley City Council - in response to their recent efforts to silence the Marines and chase all vestiges of the military out of their city.  Remember, the City Council called the Marines, “unwelcome intruders” and accused them of commiting acts of “barbarity.” Well now the rest of America will be heard from this Tuesday, February 12th when we organize a giant pro-America rally to protest the Berkeley City Council when they gather for their City Council meeting. The City Council meeting takes place at 7:00 PM at 2134 Martin Luther King Jr. Way in Berkeley, CA. Move America Forward is asking people to show up by 5:00 PM if possible - so we have a crowd gathered in time for the media crews, and so we can secure seats for supporters inside the City Council Chambers. Berkeley City Council Tells Marines To Leave

Ann Arbor City Council Approves Liberty Street Re-zoning
2008-01-09 01:20:00
Revitalization of McKinley Towne Center hopes to attract customersThe width of an alley running from Washington to Liberty Street was the only holdup on continuing the Liberty and Division Street revitalization project known as McKinley Towne Center.  Once community concerns were voiced, the narrowed 10 foot alley was restored to its originally planned 26 feet.  This paved the way for a unanimous re-zoning approval of the 515 E. Liberty Street project.   McKinley Inc. plans to tear down a vacant one-story building in favor of a new two-story building on the 1.15 acre site that used to be home to National City Bank.  Site plan and development agreement for this parcel were also approved. The McKinley Towne Center revitalization project proposes to add retail on Liberty Street from the Towne Center all the way to the Michigan Theater.  Some locals see this area as a historic "dead-zone" and are thrilled to see a new face. The discussion of the all...
