Gay Marriage in NY and CA on June 17th
2008-05-29 17:07:00
If your gay and want to get married you will soon have that right if you live in California or New York. I'm sure you have already heard the good news out west, but what you may not know is New Yorker's will also get wedding bells and full marriage benefits on June 17th, 2008. Hours after California issued a directive Wednesday authorizing that date, word came that New York Gov. David Paterson instructed state agencies - including those governing insurance and health care - to immediately change policies and regulations to recognize gay marriages preformed in California. New York already recognizes marriages from Canada, Spain, and other counties where it's legal. Massachusetts is currently the only U.S. state that recognizes same-sex marriage, but its residency requirements currently bar New Yorkers from marrying there. Now they don't have to leave the country to get hitched. The move by Paterson's administration does not legalize same-sex marriage in New York. The state'...

Gay marriage now legal in California!
2008-05-15 19:46:00
The California Supreme Court has overturned a ban on gay marriage, paving the way for California to become the second state where gay and lesbian residents can marry. The justices released the 4-3 decision Thursday, saying that domestic partnerships are not a good enough substitute for marriage in an opinion written by Chief Justice Ron George. "Under these circumstances, we cannot find that retention of the traditional definition of marriage constitutes a compelling state interest," the court said in a majority decision. "Accordingly, we conclude that to the extent the current California statutory provisions limit marriage to opposite-sex couples, these statutes are unconstitutional." More on this story from NBC News...
Calif. Court rules on Gay Marriage Thursday!
2008-05-14 23:34:00
The California Supreme Court said it plans to issue its long-awaited decision on whether to legalize same-sex marriage on Thursday. The high court announced the pending opinion on its Web site Wednesday morning. Justices heard oral arguments in a series of cases brought by gay and lesbian couples, the city of San Francisco and two gay rights advocacy groups in early March. The court has been asked to decide whether the state's one man-one woman marriage laws violate the civil rights of same-sex couples. If it rules in favor of the plaintiffs, California could become the second state after Massachusetts where gays and lesbians can legally wed. Gay-rights organizations sent mass e-mails to people Wednesday telling them to get ready for a historical decision and, according to Equality California: "win or lose, we must stand united and proud to accept the Court's decision. The world will be watching us. Our response needs to match this moment." Which way do you expect the court to r...

American Bigots for the Military
2008-05-02 10:33:00
Well the bigots are out in force and at it again. A conservative lobby group is urging Congress to reject legislation that would repeal "Don't Ask, Don' Tell", the ban on gays and lesbians serving openly in the military. The Military Readiness Enhancement Act which would repeal the decade old DADT has bipartisan support and hearings are expected to be held this year. Americans For The Military, part of the conservative Center for Military Readiness, is circulating a petition online to pressure members of Congress to maintain the ban. Below is their new video which has been posted on YouTube. Don't bother trying to leave a comment on their video as they have comments blocked. Gee, I wonder why that is?
Domestic Elder Abuse in Louisiana: The Case of August Baxter
2008-05-01 13:30:00
Ray,Could I post something about my late father's abuse? -Eric C. BaxterMy late father, August Baxter, was an elderly and disabled man when, as his wife lay dying, his home was invaded by interlopers who appointed themselves to be his "caregivers". He was coerced into signing legal instruments he could not read and which were artfully designed to imprison him and rob him of his assets. His body was ultimately found in the lake behind his home, just days before a legal resolution seemed at hand. The manner of his death was classified as "undetermined", but his apparent drowning in two feet of water resulted from negligence, violence or the application of psychological abuse.Throughout his long ordeal, family members reporting his exploitation, urgently warning of his endangerment and attempting to arrange the legal assistance he requested were subjected to acts of official reprisal and intimidation. State law defines elder abuse and criminalizes any failure to report it; it does not...

Kuwait Female Civil Rights An Issue
2008-04-14 09:08:00
Kuwait University Professor Dr. Khalifa Alhamida told a reporter, “Sometimes discrimination is needed in society.” He justified qotas aHt Kuwait Unversity which require hgher GPAs for women than men since women now constitute two-thirds of university enrollment. It is common for many Kuwait men to travel abroad in search of education while few women take advantage of that opportunity. Some advocates of female quotas argue their society needs more male leadership so imposing higher standards for women essentially helps the entire nation. The Kuwait legislature has been debating, but not taking action on, a Woman’s lw which would grant extensive rights to women such as allowing them to pass on Kuwait citizenship to children, and monetary support for those remaining home caring for children
