Breaking News: Richard Morgan Wins Arthur C. Clarke Award
2008-05-01 00:02:00
As reported here via text message, Richard Morgan has won the Arthur C. Clarke Award for Thirteen (published as Black Man in England). Thirteen made Amazon's best SF/Fantasy list last year. Now Morgan has one more reason for readers to pick up the book. Last year in an exclusive Amazon interview, we asked him to tell us what made Thirteen special. His response then? "It is, by all critical accounts, the best thing I’ve written so far. It’s stuffed full of contentious material that, whether you agree with it or not, will give you conversational ammunition at dinner parties for months to come. Shock and Awe your guests with Provocative Genetic Science! It’s my first conscious attempt at a world that is not dystopian--roll up and see a cheery(ish) future society, one you might not actually mind living in for a change. It has a very unpredictable storyline--I know this because I had no idea where my characters were going half the time, and if I couldn’t guess, it’s unlikely ...

Clarke Quay C Clinic
2008-04-03 06:28:00
According to Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary (Special Price Edition), clinic is a special place where specialized medical advice and treatment are given to visiting patients. Clinic is also an occasion in a hospital when students learn by watching how a medical specialist examines and treats his or her patients. Although you can see there are patient beds with operating theater lights and table with wheel chairs in the above photos. It's really interesting that Clarke Quay C Clinic has nothing to do with any medical problems. You can't find any doctors, nurses, students or patients but there are waiters, waitresses, bartenders and chefs in C Clinic.Actually C Clinic is a bar & restaurant that serves food & beverages. It's located at Block B of Clarke Quay in Singapore. Feel free to visit C Clinic's web site http://www.theclinic.sg/ to satisfy your curiosity.

Arthur C. Clarke (1917 - 2008)
2008-03-26 21:51:00
Yes, I know it's a week since his death, but given my preoccupation with Sci-Fi lately, it's probably bizarre I haven't mentioned it before now. Sadly a giant of Sci-Fi, Arthur C. Clarke died on the 19th of March aged 90.The thing is I have never read an Arthur C. Clarke novel. I have read many of his short stories (obviously works like 'The Star', 'The Nine Billion Names of God', etc.), but I can't remember reading a novel. Then of course there was '2001: A Space Odyssey', but I think more of Kubrick when it comes to that movie. (My understanding is that Clarke explains much in the novel left mysterious in the film, and that's probably why the movie does me.) What I loved as a child was 'Arthur C. Clarke's Mysterious World'. THAT captivated me. I never missed it, with its Fortean elements (was that an Arabic battery from the Middle Ages?), monsters (ah, that Bigfoot home movie; the giant monkey sitting on the crate; the aerial shot of the giant snake; that weir...
The Arthur C. Clarke Gamma Ray Burst
2008-03-26 05:01:00
Larry Sessions, a columnist for Earth & Sky, has suggested in his blog that the gamma-ray event whose radiation reached us a few hours before Arthur C. Clarke died, and which occurred 7.5 billion years ago, be named the Clarke Event. The outburst, which produced enough visible light to render it a naked-eye object across ...

The Clarke Event: Largest Explosion in the Universe.
2008-03-25 21:17:00
On March 19th of 2008, Arthur C. Clarke passed away.  Earlier in that day [Earth time] there was an event, an explosion the likes of which has never been witnessed in human history. A powerful stellar explosion detected March 19 by NASA's Swift satellite has shattered the record for the most distant object that could be seen with the naked eye. NASA Satellite Detects Naked-Eye Explosion Halfway Across Universe It was a gamma ray burst of such magnitude that it was visible to the naked eye from across half the universe. Later that evening, the Very Large Telescope in Chile and the Hobby-Eberly Telescope in Texas measured the burst's redshift at 0.94. A redshift is a measure of the distance to an object. A redshift of 0.94 translates into a distance of 7.5 billion light years, meaning the explosion took place 7.5 billion years ago For those following along at home, that is CRAAAZY far away. Well this is all mind-boggling, but now there is an effort to get th...

Sundown with Sir Arthur C Clarke
2008-03-21 03:45:00
Sundown with Sir Arthur C Clarke Jeff Greenwald Daily News When last I saw Arthur C. Clarke, in March of 2005, his memory was already fading. It was late afternoon. We sat on the patio of the Galle Face Hotel, one of Arthur's favourite spots in Colombo, Sri Lanka. It had been nine years since my last visit to his adopted island. Now I was back working with Mercy Corps, an international aid agency, on a tsunami relief project. Clarke sipped his tea and stared West, where the Indian Ocean stretched in an uninhibited arc to the coast of Somalia. "I don't remember anything about working with Stanley (Kubrick) on 2001," he said, "or my months at the Chelsea Hotel. I don't remember my last scuba dive, or what my mother's face looked like. The only thing I remember with any real clarity is the first kiss with the love of my life and our last words, before we parted." Sir Arthur with his private satellite dish, one of th...
