Clay Buchholz goes 4-plus innings in rehab start
2008-05-26 03:36:00 Clay Buchholz pitched four-plus innings Sunday night in a rehab start for Triple-A Pawtucket. On the disabled list because of a torn nail on his middle finger, Buchholz allowed one run and three hits with three strikeouts and two walks. He threw 38 of his 63 pitches for strikes and topped out at 96 mph on ...

A Clay Buchholz Masterpiece, But The Fourth Loss In A Row For The Red Sox
2008-04-27 11:41:00 Clay Buchholz pitched the second-best game of his life but ended up with only a loss on his record to show for it. An eighth inning mistake pitch (the pitch was fine, in my eyes!) allowed the Tampa Bay Rays' Akinori Iwamura to hit the go-ahead two run home run and his team beat the Boston Red Sox in a heartbreaker, 2-1. Just look at Clay's pitching line and you'll know what I mean...IP H R ER BB K HR Season ERA C. Buchholz 8.0 3 2 2 2 9 1 4.08 L (1-2)This is what Terry Francona said about his starting rookie pitcher, who I hope is here on the big club to stay. He has progressed incredibly since the early spring training games, and nine times out of ten, he would have won a game like last night's...?His stuff was electric,? Boston manager Terry Francona said. ?He left one breaking ball over the plate.? Old friend Eric Hinske, who now plays for Tampa, was even more forthcoming in his praise of young Clay. This is what HE had to say after the game...?God, he was lights out last n...

Erica Ellyson is Clay Buchholz?s ?Penthouse? Pet
2008-03-13 21:42:00 The best thing ever to happen to Boston Red Sox pitcher Clay Buchholz was not throwing a no-hitter last year as a rookie, but the fact that he is dating Penthouse Pet Erica Ellyson according to On 205th. Sorry Ladies, Clay Buchholz Has A Hot Girlfriend
2008-03-13 16:48:00 We all know how all females fawn over the older stars in baseball and yes even the new ones that are upcoming in baseball. The Red Sox are no exception to this with young studs Jacoby Ellsbury and Clay Buchholz. We heard about about Ellsbury’s girlfriend Kelsey during the World Series parade last year but we hadn’t heard anything about Buchholz having a girlfriend. And now we have since Clay’s father Skip spilled the beans on the Karlson & McKenzie show about his girlfriend, Erica Ellyson. Ellyson just happens to be the 2008 Penthouse Pet of the Year. ?I know he?s met her, gone out with her, but I don?t know if you consider that dating . . . but hey, a boy could do worse,? ?It doesn?t surprise me any,? said Clay?s dad. ?Last year up in Boston he was dating a Victoria?s Secret model, so he?s moving up the ladder . . . . I mean, he?s got pretty good taste.? All I have to say is Clay is one lucky dude. For some very NSFW pictures, you can click here and here.

Odds & Ends: New York Mets And Clay Buchholz
2008-03-09 21:16:00 In John Perrotto's must-read Sunday column for Baseball Prospectus, Every Given Sunday, he follows-up on some stories that began germinating earlier this week and includes a doozy that will make the Juan Pierre/Nomar Garciaparra over younger & better players debate seem trivial. Here are a few of the nuggets I found interesting. Amongst the names the Mets are kicking the tires on to replace/build depth following the Mosies Alou injury and Carlos Delgado hip issue are Marcus Thames and Brandon Inge of Detroit, Orioles' teammates Kevin Millar and Jay Payton and Pirates' 1B/OF Xavier Nady. The Mets have bullpen arms to offer, preferably Scott Schoenweiss or Jorge Sosa. Fantasy Implication: If it is Nady, then Steve Pearce lands on every draftboard as a possible 25 HR hitter. Brett Boone is impressing in Nationals' camp to the point of making Ronnie Belliard available in trade. Fantasy Implication: Belliard signed a two-year deal. This...

A Rough Outing For Clay Buchholz
2008-03-03 11:49:00 Yes, it was a rough two innings for young Clay Buchholz Sunday in Fort Myers, as he pitched the third and fourth innings of Sunday's game against the Twinkies. He gave up four runs and four hits in that short span. He had this to say afterwards...?I?ve got to be able to get outs and not give up four runs in an inning. I know that,? Buchholz said. ?It didn?t happen to me all that much last year so it?s a little bitter right now.??There?s probably four or five guys here that are fighting for one spot,? Buchholz said. ?I like competing against everybody and that?s what it?s all about. If they were just going to give it to you, you?d take it for granted and that?s not how it should work.?Yes, conceivably Tavarez or Colon could fill that number five slot in the rotation, but I have faith in Clay. It was his first spring start, and like Jon Lester, his mechanics were off. It's only natural. On the up side, old man Timmy Wakefield pitched the first two innings, scoreless innings, too. He...

Sunday Morning Santana
2007-09-30 17:40:00 Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe discusses the names being thrown around for Johan Santana. As well as the Kemp/Kershaw for Santana, Cafardo quotes an AL Executive: One AL executive theorized, "There are a few teams who could match up with the Twins. Would the Yankees deal Melky Cabrera and an Ian Kennedy for Santana? How about Boston? Would they send a Clay Buchholz and a Jacoby Ellsbury for him? The Mets? There are few teams who could handle the paycheck you'd have to give Santana and also be able to part with key prospects."If that logic is correct, it narrows the list of suitors considerably. MLBTR readers made the astute point in the Kemp/Kershaw comments that if a team is going to give up two Major League-ready prospects, the deal would be contingent on a re-signing of Santana. A one year rental is most likely not going to appeal to any GM handing over otherwise untouchable commodities such as a Buchholz/Ellsbury or a Kennedy/Cabrera or a Kemp/Kershaw. W...

2007-09-05 13:46:00 Clay Buchholz is headed to the bullpen despite pitching a no-hitter last week. Yanks Sweep Sox, Then Lose Momentum [Addison Quale]
2007-09-04 20:42:00 What a wild week for the Bosox and Yankee rivalry it has been. After inching back into control last week, the Sox came to Yankee Stadium with a strong 8 game lead in the division. Sox fans were smelling blood as they knew if they could just sweep this series, or even take 2 of 3, the Yanks would likely be dead for good in terms of catching up with them. But Alas-- memories from last August's Boston Massacre Part Deux came to life again. And the Yankees absolutely stymied the Sox in the Bronx behind some absolutely stellar pitching (Against Boston's best pitching no less!). If there's one Yankee I dislike the most, it's Roger Clemens. And if there's two, add in A-Rod. And if three, gimme Jeter. Well, all three took out their whuppin' sticks and had their way with the suddenly offensively-inept Boston Red Sox. After scoring 10 runs in 4 straight against the ChiSox, the Red Sox could barely bang out a hit against Wang and Clemens. And so, the Sox left with their tail between thei...

More on Last Night: The No-Hitter By Clay Buchholz; The Rundown...
2007-09-02 22:04:00 I like the WNST radio station and all, but Nestor really needs to give it up with the hostility. In light of the Baltimore Orioles' malaise this season, the 30-3 game, the Red Sox no-hitter are part of the ebbs and flow of baseball. Yes, the game can be extreme, and full of highs and lows, but it is what it is. We all know the Orioles are bad this season, but some of unusual and horrible games that have taken place this season along with the moves made in the off season have made the 2007 even more tragic. This what Nestor had to say about last night and the season in general: "So, if a 30-3 beatdown didn't upset your stomach...And if an 11-run inning and a Camden Yards sweep at the hands of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays didn't send you to drive the porcelain bus...And if a pair of nine-game losing streaks didn't exactly make history...TONIGHT, the 2007 Orioles added a "Peter Angelos ego-sized" mark on the history books: tonight they were no-hit by a kid making his second ap...

Red Sox Rookie, Clay Buchholz, Tosses a No-No [J. Mark English]
2007-09-02 06:50:00 Here with the story is Howard Ulman of the Boston Globe:Before Clay Buchholz made his major league debut two weeks ago, the Boston Red Sox told him he was going back to the minors -- even if he pitched a no-hitter. Got to keep the kid now. The 23-year-old rookie pitched that no-hitter in just his second outing, using a dazzling three-pitch assortment of fastballs, curves and changeups to beat the Baltimore Orioles 10-0 Saturday night."There's no going back to Triple-A," Red Sox manager Terry Francona said.Buchholz was called up from Pawtucket on Saturday when teams were allowed to expand their 25-man rosters. The crowd stood through the entire ninth inning, cheering every pitch and taking pictures of the righty in his windup and as he paced around the mound. He started the inning by striking out Brian Roberts on a 93 mph fastball. A groan rose from the stands when Corey Patterson hit a line drive to center with one out, but Coco Crisp easily moved over to catch it.Buchholz started N...

A Witness to History - the Orioles No Hit by Rookie Clay Buchholz
2007-09-02 05:26:00 Well, I just got back from Fenway Park, and I am back in the room where I'll retire for the evening. What an amazing night, although the Orioles lost. There's nothing bad you say about the Red Sox tonight whether you are their biggest fan or hate them with a passion. You have to give Clay Buchholz credit for pitching his heart out, Jason Varitek for guiding the young man, knowing the Oriole batters and setting up his pitches, along with Red Sox defense. The atmosphere was electric, and the fans were behind Clay's back all night. It was a wonderful moment to see the Sox players celebrate the moment with Buchholz on the mound. The kid was nasty and the final pitch to strike out Markakis was a nasty one, and one to behold.Sunday is another day and the Orioles will have a chance to make something of the series in Boston; however, the night belongs to Clay Buchholz, the Red Sox, and Red Sox Nation.Congrats to you all.

Clay Buchholz May Debut Friday
2007-08-13 18:46:00 It's looking like the Red Sox will opt to use 23 year-old phenom Clay Buchholz as one of the starter's in Friday's doubleheader. In my estimation, a stellar start against the Angels could be enough for him to replace Jon Lester as the fifth starter. Lester's last two starts have been poor; his start Tuesday against the Devil Rays will be important. Buchholz is arguably the best pitching prospect in the minors right now. He throws in the low to mid-90s with a plus change and curveball. He also commands those pitchers well, posting a 5.46 K/BB in the minors this year. Another changeup master, Cole Hamels, whiffed 145 in 132 innings as a rookie. Buchholz could be that good, though even Hamels ran into some early struggles in the bigs. Put the third-best offense in baseball behind Buchholz and you have a player that must be picked up in all leagues. Most likely it will be just for the Friday start, but you never know. Buchholz should p...
