Clay Hensley, The Pitcher Who Gave Up Home Run #755 Violated the Drug Polic
2007-08-07 21:12:00 I'm suprised that not too many other outlets and medis mentioned this, but I just caught this in the Los Angeles Times just a few moments ago..."How ironic that Clay Hensley, the pitcher who gave up Barry Bonds' record-tying home run Saturday, was one of four San Diego Padres farmhands suspended for 15 games in 2005 for violating baseball's minor league steroids policy. ."Wow, what a link...

Famous Last Words
2007-08-05 08:43:00 With a little help from the power of hindsight, Clay Hensley's pre-game resolution to challenge Barry Bonds, rather than pitch around him, takes on a new aura of tragic fate:?I'm going to pitch to him,? Hensley said. ?I'm not going to lay one over the middle of the plate. But I'm going to pitch to him.?Ah, the bittersweet stench of destiny. Brings to mind General Custer's famous "I'm going to make a last stand" speech.Hensley and other Padres pitchers admit they have considered what it would be like to be forever known as the pitcher who gave up a historic home run to Bonds. ?I just don't want to be that guy,? The thought process could have gone something like this:"I'm pretty bad at pitching; Bonds is really good at hitting. I don't want to be known for the rest of my days as the guy who coughed up ho...

2007-06-19 23:11:00 A new trade rumor has surfaced, though Kevin Towers may have already shot it down. The report on San Diego radio (specifically XX Sportsradio 1090) was that the Padres could send southpaw reliever Justin Hampson as well as groundball artist Clay Hensley to the Reds for Adam Dunn. Kevin Towers described this rumor as "not worth chasing" to the San Diego Union Tribune's Tim Sullivan. Hampson is the only lefty in the Padres' pen, and he's allowed just two earned runs in 22.1 innings. However, his strikeout rate is quite low and his history isn't that impressive. The Padres insist they don't need a southpaw in the pen, but could easily bring up Royce Ring if they trade Hampson. After a breakout rookie season in '06, Hensley hasn't been able to get on track this year. He's been battered around in 12 starts split between the Padres and Triple A. He had a fine spring but blister and groin injuries surfaced and Hensley ended up losing his rota...
