Xohm morphs into Clearwire: it?s a deal!
2008-05-07 20:39:00 A strange brew of investors and partners will constitute the first nationwide Wimax network in the US. While lack of funds was never referred to by either Sprint or Clearwire as a reason for delays. it’s an obvious factor. The new cash infusion from investors should insure a proper and hopefully a faster build ...

SPRINT, CLEARWIRE SET TO ANNOUNCE $12B WIMAX DEAL WITH COMCAST, TIME WARNER
2008-05-07 02:14:00 Filed under: Wireless We've definitely heard this one before, but the buzz around a proposed $12B WiMAX partnership between Sprint, Clearwire, Comcast, Time Warner Cable, Intel, and Google is deafening right now, all based on a report in the Wall Street Journal. The plan is for Sprint to merge its XOHM wireless broadband division with Clearwire, and then take a total of $3.2B in investments from a host of other players: $1.05B from Comcast, $1B from Intel, $550M from Time Warner Cable, $500M from Google, and $100M from Bright House. The resulting company will be worth some $12B, and the WSJ says investors have given their final approval for the deal -- a rumor we've already heard with no meaningful result, so take it with a grain of salt. Or a whole salt lick, actually. We're not certain why Big Cable is so eager to dump money on Sprint after two previous ventures both folded recently, but if this goes down, it's a pretty big boost for WiMAX, which was looking pretty sickly late...

Clearwire & Sprint agree on common architecture
2008-02-02 05:41:00 The on again off again relationship between Clearwire and Sprint continues. New and presumably level headed management at Sprint has prompted new talks between the two, but the only agreement so far has been to use a common architecture: Clearwire Corp. and Sprint Nextel Corp. still havent resurrected their now-defunct plan for a collaborative nationwide mobile WiMAX buildout, Clearwire CEO Ben Wolff said in a conference call this morning. However, the two companies arent ignoring each other, either. The companies have aligned on common network architecture, Wolff announced at Clearwires investor conference in Portland, Ore. The teams have made a lot of progress in the last 60 days, Wolff said, adding that both companies are making significant progress on the terms of our roaming agreement. (from RCR News) As the saga continues it appears that the 2 companies recognize some synergy between them is possible. If they could make a roaming agreement, and deploy in cities for maximum jo...

Sprint and Clearwire agree terms on roaming customers on WiMAX
2008-02-01 12:32:00 Clearwire and Sprint have agreed on how both companies will handle roaming users between their WiMAX networks announced Ben Wolff, COE of Clearwire. A report from Reuters says the WiMAX double has “agreed on common network architecture in order to make it possible for their customers to roam between both networks.” Presumably, this agreement will allow Sprint and WiMAX to breack up the States into WiMAX market-halves and with each company servicing their customers in their respective areas. Thus allowing WiMAX users to roam between networks when needed, which will result in creating a nationwide WiMAX cover. So this deal should make Sprint one of the premier mobile broadband suppliers in the USA; that is once it launches. Source – MocoNews

Clearwire and Sprint to Resume Negotiations
2008-01-30 02:06:00 Reports are that Clearwire and Sprint have decided to resume negotiations over sharing their networks to provide greater WiMax coverage. Sprint has already began its WiMax deployment and hopes to reach 100 million U.S. consumers by the end of 2008. In November, previous negotiations ended sending Clearwire's stock down nearly 40 percent; however, since then there has been reports that Sprint may even spin off its WiMax division and merge it with Clearwire. Clearwire currently operates pre-WiMax networks in nearly 46 U.S. markets, and has just started testing full WiMax networks in Portland, Oregan.

Clearwire Loses Sprint Agreement
2007-11-10 15:47:00 Clearwire Corp. and Sprint Nextel Corp. reported on Friday that they have canceled plans to join each others high speed wireless networks. The decision is a major loss for Clearwire who already has deployed WiMax to some parts of the country. Sprint's WiMax network would have extended Clearwire's much needed coverage across the country.
WiMax: Sprint, Clearwire Split
2007-11-10 01:42:00 The difficulties associated with rolling out wireless service through WiMax may have claimed the nascent Sprint and Clearwire partnership as a victim. While both companies plan to continue building WiMax solutions separately, news of Sprint pushing Clearwire aside raises more questions about WiMax deployment than it answers. An AP report said the partnership would have Sprint's WiMax service complementing the smaller Clearwire's offering. The end of the pairing may give Clearwire founder Craig McCaw headaches to complement his sleepless night instead. "The termination of the agreement certainly dramatically impacts the longer-term financial pressures on Clearwire and its aggressive build-out strategy," analyst Christopher King of Stifel Nicolaus said in the report. Though the rollout of Xohm, Sprint's WiMax service, appeared in doubt a month ago, later news about Xohm indicated it would continue, despite WiMax booster Gary Forsee being pushed out of Sprint's CEO position. Sprint Nextel and Clearwire dissolve Wimax partnership
2007-11-09 14:35:00 The partnership that was to make for better coverage, lower investment costs, and faster implementation of coast to coast Wimax has ended. Sprint, which has been criticized by investors for its commitment to spend $5 billion by the end of 2010 on building a WiMax network, said it could not resolve “complexities” associated with the Clearwire partnership and failed to agree on the terms of the transaction. Citing people familiar with the matter, The Wall Street Journal noted on Thursday that the departure last month of Sprint CEO Gary Forsee made it too difficult to reach a final agreement. (from Cnet) This makes a national third pipe in the air less much likely for the near future. How much longer will the fixed broadband duopoly and the wireless cartel have a strangle hold on American consumers?

Amp'd to team up with Clearwire?
2007-08-13 17:03:00 Amp'd content team to live on with Clearwire? Posted Aug 10th 2007 4:58PM by Chris ZieglerFiled under: Cellphones, Wireless Amp'd's virtual network may be dead and gone (not really, it got acquired; you know what we mean), but the MVNO had arguably one of the better exclusive content packages out there. Ironically, we've heard that Amp'd ultimately spent only a very small fraction of its once-$400 million fortune on the content itself, but hey, maybe they spent that money somewhat wisely. Anyhoo, it seems Peter Adderton and his jolly gang have been shopping themselves around as a one-stop-shop package deal of content, and fixed wireless provider Clearwire may be getting ready to bite. Details are slim at this point, but the synergy is pretty obvious: the former Amp'd crew can concentrate on what it does best -- produce entertaining content -- and let Clearwire worry about the infrastructure.
