Pope says he is ashamed of clergy abuse scandal
2008-04-15 17:48:00
Benedict's pilgrimage was the first trip by a pontiff to the United States since the sex abuse scandal rocked U.S. dioceses in the early 2000s and triggered lawsuits that have cost the church hundreds of millions of dollars in settlements.
Ministerial Mojo
2008-04-09 21:35:00
One of the reasons I left my beloved old church was a disagreement (one of many) that I had over denominational doctrine. The first time this particular doctrine was revealed to me was at a youth event during which communion was celebrated. I was surprised that my pastor at the time, who I greatly ...

Clergy Letter Project: Your Ideas?
2008-01-21 13:18:00
Regular visitors will know that my little fellowship here in London is participating in this year's Clergy Letter Project. Now in its third year, the project aims to explore the interrelationship between science and religion - as well as countering the growing fundamentalist mis-representation of our faith. What we are aiming to do is to create a series of small vids talking about some of the issues involved. We've got a theologian (yours truly) and a geneticist (a fellow OC/IC believer) participating. I'm hoping that in the run up to Feb 8-10 we might have some interesting exchanges here on the blog that will feed the creative process and help shape the videos. What are your thoughts on the realationship between science and religion? How have recent debates (fuelled by figures such as Dawkins) informed or shaped your thinking? What do you see as the contribution we OC/IC folk can make to this conversation?

Take a trip to Lourdes during the “special offer” period starting this weekend till December 8, 2008, says Pope Benedict XVI. This piece of news had me both laughing and shaking my head in disbelief (yes, I can do both at the same time!). Yet, on the other hand, it also saddened me to know that ...

News & Current Events :: Episcopal Bishop Ejects Clergy
2007-08-03 17:28:00
Author: Eric Subject: Episcopal Bishop Ejects ClergyPosted: Fri Aug 03, 2007 11:28 am (GMT -4) Episcopal Bishop Ejects Clergy Julia Duin Virginia Episcopal Bishop Peter J. Lee has ejected 20 of his former clergy from the priesthood after they quit the denomination in December over the 2003 consecration of New Hampshire Bishop V. Gene Robinson, who is openly homosexual. In a document signed Aug. 1, the bishop defrocked 18 men and two women, saying they had "abandoned the communion of the Episcopal Church." The widely anticipated document came seven months after 11 churches — along with their clergy — voted to leave the diocese and the denomination. Bishop Lee retaliated Jan. 22 by issuing an "inhibition" order forbidding 21 clergy affiliated with these churches to function in his diocese as Episcopal priests and giving them six months to change their minds. Although their health benefits were terminated Jan. 31, they were allowed to retain their pens...

Shameful Mahony offers hollow apology to plaintiffs in clergy sex abuse cas
2007-07-16 01:21:00
Cardinal Mahony is not a noble man. He wishes he could press "rewind" the damage caused by the shameful sexual abuse of the Church as if it were a video tape, yet he was in a position to press, to keep with the same simile, "stop." I'm angry at the Church for making itself the butt of jokes (deserved, sadly) and an object of derision. Of course, this doesn't have to do with the Church' teaching and the Church has been here before (think of the worldly popes from the renaissance, about Sixtus 4 to Alexander 6, whose exploits would make Charlie Sheen blush), and the Church will survive this as well, but it's still a horror and an embarrassment. It seems to me that the Church could avoid lots of this stuff if it allowed its priests to marry. I've discussed it before and won't rehash here, but it's an idea whose time has come (it probably came about 1600, actually). The Orthodox do it and they're only a little in error. With all due respect, this guy makes me ill. LA Ti...
Politics and the Benefit of Clergy
2007-07-13 09:12:00
Not to be confused with the modern saying, “married without benefit of clergy” The reference here relates to punishment dispensed during medieval times for offenses against morality, common misdemeanors and other crimes.  A cleric or member of the aristocracy while in theory subject to the same rules and punishment as the common folk, could provided the offenses were committed against the common ...
Lal Masjid Saga & our Clergy
2007-07-07 15:39:00
Quoting here a mail by my bro:   There is a very interesting tradition of Holy Prophet (PBUH) which clearly shows the greatness and farsightedness of Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) prophesising the decadence of Muslim clergy. It is quoted in Mishkat, Book of Ilm, Al-Fasl III, page 38 and Kanz-al-Ummal page 6 of 43. I have translated it ...

Scholars and Clergy Slam ?Lost Tomb of Jesus?
2007-02-26 23:41:03
Houston Chronicle | World News | February 26, 2007 By Marshall Thompson Journalist, Associated Press (AP) JERUSALEM ? Archaeologists and clergymen in the Holy Land derided claims in a new documentary produced by James Cameron that contradict major Christian tenets, but the Oscar-winning director said the evidence was based on sound statistics. “The Lost Tomb of Jesus,” which the Discovery Channel will run on March 4, argues that 10 ancient ossuaries ? small caskets used to store bones ? discovered in a suburb of Jerusalem in 1980 may have contained the bones of Jesus and his family, according to a press release issued by the Discovery Channel. One of the caskets even bears the title, “Judah, son of Jesus,” hinting that Jesus may have had a son, according to the documentary. And the very fact that Jesus had an ossuary would contradict the Christian belief that he was resurrected and ascended to heaven. (more…)

10,000 Clergy Preach Darwin over Scripture
2007-02-21 01:02:00
Many pastors take advantage of special occasions and holidays to preach topical sermons of importance to families, communities, and even the nation. Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving, Independence Day?all of these are wonderful times to remember God?s blessings upon His people. Other days of remembrance include Valentine?s Day, Mother?s Day, and even ?Sanctity of Life Sunday,? intended to remind Christians of the millions of unborn children who have been murdered since 1973 through abortions. However, not everyone is aware that February 11, 2007 has been proclaimed ?Evolution Sunday? by over 10,000 ministers across the United States. Started by the ?Clergy Letter Project,? this day of remembrance coincides with the birthday of Charles Darwin, the father of modern evolutionary thought. The web site of the Clergy Letter Project has announced:On 11 February 2007 hundreds of congregations from all portions of the country and a host of denominations will come together to discuss the compati...
