Steelers-Browns Live Blog
2008-09-15 02:07:00 Welcome to my live blog of the Pittsburgh Steelers-Cleveland Browns game. I am live from my couch with my Terrible Towel right next to me. I?ll be writing my thoughts about the game, and you are welcome to share your thoughts in the comments section below. Since Brett Favre and the Jets lost this afternoon, I?ll give the over/under of Favre mentions during the telecast by John Madden and/or Al Michaels at 3. (If the Jets won, this number would be 6)I?ll also have the over/under on commercials for My Own Worst Enemy, Christian Slater?s new show at 4.Oh, I?ll predict a Steelers win by the score 34-17.First QuarterWe?re getting a story from Andrea Kremer that it?s windy. I appreciate her telling us this since I wouldn?t have noticed her hair blowing and the papers swirling behind her.Just one day, I want a player in the introductions to say Ithaca College when talking about where they went to school. In case you were wondering (doubtful), the Bombers won Saturday and are now 2-0....

Steelers-Browns and Other Stuff
2008-09-11 16:21:00 Before I write about this Sunday?s Steelers-Browns game, take a quick look at the date of this post. I can?t believe that it has been seven years since that horrific day. Please take a moment of silence or reflection today to remember those who lost their lives in New York, Virginia and Pennsylvania seven years ago today.Thank you.I feel like it?s time to revisit my post from September 2007 when I wrote that the Pittsburgh Steelers-Cleveland Browns series is no longer a rivalry. Since returning to Cleveland in 1999, the Steelers are 16-3 against the Browns including the Wild Card round win during the 2002 season. The last time Cleveland defeated Pittsburgh was October 5, 2003. That?s not a rivalry. Until the Browns hire Bill Cowher, win the division or defeat the Steelers more than three times in nine years, it?s just another divisional game no more or no less important than the games against Baltimore or Cincinnati. Finally, when you have a few minutes, check out the following...

In The Red Zone: Patriots News and Notes
2008-03-06 18:00:00 According to Christopher Gasper of the Boston Globe, New England Patriots veteran wide receiver Troy Brown hasn’t made a decision yet about next season and that fans shouldn’t count out a return in 2008 quite just yet. A source close to Brown also said that a decision probably isn’t coming anytime soon either. “He feels great. He feels he can still play and still contribute,” said the source. “Obviously, he would have liked to have played more than that one game he played. I don’t think he’s decided whether he’s playing or not playing. A lot depends on what the Patriots do.” The source also said that either a Patriot return or retiring are not Brown’s only options. Brown would be willing to play elsewhere if there was no room for him here. It sure would be weird seeing Troy in a Dolphins, Jets or Browns uniform. In other Patriots news the team is looking at restricted free agent LB Adam Seward from Carolina Panthers...

Derek Anderson Remains With Cleveland Browns
2008-03-01 04:51:00 The clock struck 12:01 A.M. Friday morning and Pro Bowl quarterback Derek Anderson was officially a restricted free agent. After weeks of tireless work by Browns executives to keep their primary signal caller, a deal was unable to be accomplished.Five hours later representatives for Anderson and general manager Phil Savage agreed to a three-year, $24 million contact with $13 million in guaranteed money. After throwing for a career high 29 touchdowns and 3,787 yards in 16 games for the 10-6 Browns, it was necessary that a deal was consummated as quickly as possible. If Anderson bolted for another team, Cleveland would have received a first and third-round draft pick.

Steelers-Browns Notes
2007-11-12 15:47:00 I attended Sunday's Steelers-Browns game and here my thoughts from Heinz Field:- In my opinion, Joshua Cribbs has now replaced Eric Metcalf as the scariest Steelers' opponent. Fortunately (or unfortunately), I missed his kickoff return for a TD as I was in the bathroom. - I was shocked (sarcasm added) that a county act performed the national anthem and a song before the game. I generally only attend one Steeler game in Pittsburgh per season, but every game recently has featured a country act. This week's country group that I've never heard of: Lady Antebellum. For country fans that read this, have you ever heard of them? - The Steelers struggled to get a pass rush most of the game, so I think they made a nice adjustment by having more defenders in coverage in the second half. - Since I don't listen to Cleveland talk radio, I wonder if Romeo Crennel is being criticized for his terrible decision late in the game to take a time-out, then challenge Heath Miller's TD catch only to ...

Rivalry Weekend
2007-11-09 13:36:00 This is a big rivalry weekend with Cortland State at Ithaca College on Saturday and the Cleveland Browns visiting the Steelers on Sunday. I?ll start with the 49th Cortaca Jug game, although there have actually been 65 games in the series (Ithaca leads 36-26-3). Both teams enter with 7-2 records and the winner has an outside chance at making the Division III playoffs, even though no 8-2 teams earned an at-large bid in 2006 and the D3football.com playoff projections fail to include either team. I?ve got several links for this game so here we go:* The Ithacan explains how the Bombers can make the postseason.*Cortland Game Notes*The Ithaca Journal?s preview #1 and #2*To the fans, stay safe out there. Analysis of Baltimore Ravens/Cleveland Browns & Chicago Bears/Detroit L
2007-10-04 20:12:00 The analysis of last week's Baltimore Ravens / Cleveland Browns game and the Chicago Bears / Detroit Lions one are next-up in my extended answers to the questions I posed on Sunday. Baltimore Ravens at Cleveland Browns (+4): My befuddlement over the line proved well-placed as the Browns handily won this game. With QB Derek Anderson utilizing his offensive weapons, WR Braylon Edwards and TE Kellen Winslow, the Browns offense is too good to be home 'dogs to teams with lesser skills players. Fantasy implications: Receivers Braylon Edwards and Kellen Winslow are ready to be every-week starters at their respective positions. QB Derek Anderson at the top of the free agent pool QBs during the Bye Week Period. After their bye? Maybe not. Baltimore Defense? Sell high if you can. Chicago Bears at Detroit Lions (+3): The Bears have fallen. Losing a high-scoring game to the Lions tells me the Super Bowl run ends at one. QB Brian Griese did throw the ba...

Steelers-Browns: No Longer a Rivalry
2007-09-11 13:13:00 When I wrote about the best sports rivalries a few months ago, I received several comments both publicly and privately questioning why I failed to include the Browns and Steelers on the list. Sunday?s game clearly provided the answer. The Steelers have now won eight in a row against Cleveland and 14 of the last 15. Simply put, the Steelers-Browns series is not a rivalry anymore, and really hasn?t been since the Browns returned in 1999. A true rivalry is one where both teams have success against the other. The Yankees-Red Sox rivalry has only been a true rivalry since 2004. Before then, it was just a series of Yankees victories. Similarly, the Browns have to win a few games this decade in order for the rivalry to return. In addition, I really don?t sense a hatred between Steelers and Browns fans and players anymore. Well, the rivalry still exists from the perspective of many Cleveland fans, but not for Pittsburgh fans. If you ask most Steelers fans who is the team?s biggest...

Brady Quinn - Starting Cleveland Browns QB?
2007-08-19 02:48:00 An article in this week's Sporting News about Brown's QB Brady Quinn got me to thinking who would be the best QB to lead the Browns this season. I share the same opinion of his competitors, incumbent Charlie Frye and back-up Derek Anderson, that most do - that neither will block Quinn the moment the Cleveland staff feels Quinn is ready to take over. In Scientific Football 2007, K.C. Joyner offers an opinion that could favor Quinn despite the holdout. He writes, "[The Browns] have completely retooled the offensive system....Their quarterbacks and receivers are all young and are now going to have to learn a completely new system that is very difficult to grasp for the first year [Mike Martz-style offense]." While Fyre's experience, and Anderson's for that matter, should allow them to ramp-up in a new system quicker, it is not so great as to leave the competitve field so uneven that Quinn could not win the job the Browns clearly want him to have by next season. Otherwise, why deal ...

Brady Quinn Ends Holdout, Signs with Browns [David Stefanini]
2007-08-07 22:16:00 Brady Quinn has ended his holdout. Today he signed a 5 year deal with the Cleveland Browns, who drafted him 22nd in this years NFL Draft. Here is ESPN.com with more:Brady Quinn has agreed to a five-year contact with the Cleveland Browns worth $20.2 million, with $7.75 million guaranteed, ending his holdout. The deal could grow to $30 million over five years with incentives. Quinn, who was on his way to Cleveland to join his teammates on Tuesday, had been working out at an athletic training facility in Arizona while his contract was being negotiated. Having missed the first 10 days of training camp, Quinn, 22, faces a considerable catch-up period at a position where the learning curve is already difficult. Although he performed in a sophisticated offense at Notre Dame, and under the tutelage of coach Charlie Weis, who is famous for developing quarterbacks, Quinn struggled in the spring workouts and minicamps. Quinn likely has lost his chance to open the season as the Browns' star...

2007 Cleveland Browns
2007-07-10 04:43:00 When one thinks of the Cleveland Browns what comes to mind is the color brown. Epononymous, yes, but brown nonetheless. Without a gunslinging QB or a power running back, football fans cannot shake the brown in the Browns. Despite the coup of QB Brady Quinn, WR Tim Carter brings nothing but the miasma of failure - the failure to develop into a third WR/legitmate long ball threat. Brown. 28-year-old RB Jamaal Lewis is coming off a season in which he increased his 2005 rushing average from 3.4 yards per carry to 3.6 yards per carry. Does any other color but "brown" come to mind? Has there been a player who has gotten more mileage out of one season (2003) than Jamaal Lewis? However, there is reason for hope (and brighter colors). QB Charlie Frye did complete 64.3% of his passes last season. His TD/INT ratio was horrid (a very brown 10/17), but the completion percentage is the focus for a young player in his first full-season at QB. What needs to be watched is how well Frye does early. I...

Browns TE Kellen Winslow Dumps Poston's As Agents - Hires Drew Rosenhaus -
2007-06-16 00:39:00 This indicates that Winslow's interested in preparing for a larger contract in the not-to-distant future. WINSLOW MAKES AGENT CHANGE - PROFOOTBALLTALK.COMMultiple league sources have informed us that Browns tight end Kellen Winslow has hired agent Drew Rosenhaus. Winslow previously was represented by Carl and Kevin Poston. Carl Poston was summarily suspended by the NFLPA in 2006 due to alleged delays in the resolution of Poston's appeal of a two-year suspension resulting from his admitted failure to read the final draft of a new contract for then-Redskins linebacker LaVar Arrington. The contract allegedly was supposed to pay two separate $6.5 million roster bonuses in 2006, and Poston claimed that the team pulled one of the roster bonuses from the last version of the deal. He said that he didn't notice the omission because he didn't read the contract. A league source tells us that the hearing on the original suspension will be conducted in September.
