How To Form Excuses On Horrible Climbing Shows
2009-08-13 17:49:00 So your riding buddies trash talked you into riding some monstrous hills out somewhere in the exterior of civilization. But you've felt better on other occasions and boy oh boy, today is just not your day. If only bicycles were made like computers, we could all have an escape key before the bone breaking, lung chopping climb to hell. But there are no shortcuts to escape.Hit hard...So how on earth do you back up and slow down like a rock efficiently on the incline without hurting valuable pride and self-esteem in front of other people? This, it turns out, is an easy one. Let me show you The Way.Things you will need to carry in your jersey pocket :-Pair of scissors.-Wife's makeup. If you're a wife, then borrow your husband's makeup. Look in the garage.-Cell phone.Things you will need to carry on your back :-A camelbak filled to the gills with water. (If it does not have gills, make sure you purchase one with gills)As your attackers, a.k.a riding mates, slam down the pressure a...
The Rate Of Climbing Uphill Explained
2009-08-01 13:00:00 I've noticed that some cyclists who have been introduced to the concept of the rate of climbing uphill falsely think that Michele Ferrari pulled this out of his own pocket, as in, he invented it or something of that nature. Negative. He only went ahead and popularized the idea, putting a confusing trademark name to it such as "VAM" and developing some of his own methods to look at it with respect to cycling performance. But the idea itself is rooted in centuries old elementary geometry and Newtonian physics. Click here for the history of vectors.Let's have some *serious* fun with climbing rate. You'll start to see simple relationships that may finally make some sense to you as a cyclist. If you love analysis, this may be for you.I'll show 5 different ways to study vertical speed, or rate of climbing. 3 of them are using math. The 4th involves using some field work with math. I'll show you what Tom Danielson's climbing rate was for the record ascent up Mount Washington and I'l...

Fed Sees Contraction Slowing, Mortgage Rates Climbing?
2009-04-29 20:51:00 As I have mentioned numerous times before, the Policy Statement released by the FOMC at the time of announcing their decision on the Feds Fund Rate is the more important factor in determining which direction mortgage rates will move in the future. I had expected a big shock to the markets, possibly even an increase in their MBS purchasing agenda yet again. This time there was no “surprise”, rather a renewed commitment to the $1.25 trillion MBS purchasing spree, along with the renewed commitment to use ALL available tools, including those not yet created I am sure, to open the floodgates of credit. Let’s break it down… Information received since the Federal Open Market Committee met in March indicates that the economy has continued to contract, though the pace of contraction appears to be somewhat slower (no surprise hear as that is what the data has been indicating for a while now). Household spending has shown signs of stabilizing but remains constr...

It's basically mountain climbing on large, frozen waterfalls. Sunrise Adventures Climbing School here in Vermont is offering a rock climbing school at the end of this month at Smuggler's Notch near Jeffersonville. Sunrise is based at Triple Diamond Ski and Sports on Route 108 a couple of hundred yards from the Smugglers Notch Ski Resort. Tuesday Toot - Rock Climbing
2008-08-05 05:57:00 This year, Adam nearly made it to the top of the rock climbing wall at Atlantis Marine World. Last year, he made it about half way up. Dova made a valiant attempt in her first try ever, but this is as far as she got. You'd think with that stance and determination she'd climb right up, but I think the harness weighed her down. She was actually less than the 45 pounds minimum weight, but was heavy enough to descend while testing it out. On the playgrounds, she loves to climb everything, so she'll be climbing this wall soon enough. Last but not least, here's Doug near the top. I, of course, am too chicken to try climbing the wall and prefer to stay behind the camera. -->

Saint Petraeus Keeps Climbing The Ladder
2008-07-11 14:27:00 This MSNBC story tells us the following?WASHINGTON - The Senate has confirmed Gen. David Petraeus as the top commander in the Middle East and Lt. Gen. Raymond Odierno to replace Petraeus as the chief military officer in Iraq. The Senate voted 95-2 in favor of Petraeus and 96-1 for Odierno. And CNN reported that the two ?No? votes against Petraeus were cast by Robert Byrd and Tom Harkin, with Harkin also voting against Odierno; Byrd?s full statement is here, and I must say that it showed a lot of deliberation. Here is a notable excerpt (from the CNN story)?Gen. Petraeus' career will be judged in large part by his role in the Iraq conflict," Byrd said. "His reticence to address other regional issues raises questions about his willingness to devote the focus and the resources needed to address them properly."And Harkin voted against both Petraeus and Odierno because, in essence, they had no plan for redeploying our military out of Iraq to fight the greatest terrorist threats we truly fa...

As gas prices keep climbing, people choosing to get their bikes fixed
2008-05-13 07:04:00 With Gasoline prices at record high levels, more drivers than ever are trying to unload their SUVs and get into vehicles that don't consume as much fuel. Some are moving to smaller more efficient cars, while others are hopping on public transit. Still others are opting for pedal power. Barry Dahl of Bismark ND seems to have picked a most opportune time to open his new bike shop. He sold more than fifty bikes in his first month in business. Bike shops all over the country are having record sales this year and even those who aren't buying new ones are getting their older bikes fixed up. Shops that have seen declining repair business for over a decade are seeing a big up-tick in business this spring. For those of you haven't ridden your bike to work yet this Friday may be a good time to start. The League of American Bicyclists is promoting Bike-to-Work Day on May 16.
