Clinton Portis channels Marie Osmond
2008-05-22 17:27:00 Hat tipped to Deuce of Davenport, Dan Snyder has now made the Country Music Awards Redskins relevant: The Washington Redskins owner acquired the show last year as part of his $175 million buyout of dick clark productions inc., and has quickly infused a highlight-reel mentality. Redskins running back Clinton Portis went to the show, and Sacramento Kings owner Gavin Maloof said he took part in a bit at Snyder's request. When asked to pick winners, Maloof picked Rascal Flatts, the Los Angeles Lakers and the Boston Celtics. Former backyard brawler (isn't that illegal?) and now famous MMA fighter Kimbo Slice was also on hand, making this the official Greatest Country Music Awards ever. Slice apparently said he'd fight Mike Tyson and, honestly, I'd pick Kimbo Slice (but what do I know; check out Bloody Elbow for more info on Slice) Back to Portis, Dan Steinberg tracked down the diverting running back to get his thoughts on the festivities. Clinton Portis... likey? "Because there...

Clinton Portis, receiver extraordinaire
2008-04-07 21:03:00 In the 2007 season, Clinton Portis quietly had the most productive receiving season of his career. I say quietly because it was not an earth shattering receiving year -- his 389 yards receiving was only nominally higher than his previous high of 364 -- and did not result in any touchdowns. However, the rub going into the '08 season was that Ladell Betts (at least relative) advantage over Portis was that he was more apt at receiving out of the backfield. Portis is a better runner and is about the best blocking running back in the National Football League. From the looks of it, CP is a more complete back now. While his numbers were good, not great, they were efficient. I was browsing STATS NFL leaderboard and stumbled across a few interesting numbers: Clinton Portis was the NFL's sixth leading rusher last year. In general, individual rushing yards are down from years past, where even LT, in a league-leading effort, could not surpass the 1500 yard mark. I attribute the change to an...

Clinton Portis wins a strangely named award
2008-01-04 16:43:00 Yesterday, Clinton Portis was named the FedEx Ground NFL Player of the Week for helping the Redskins demolish the Dallas Cowboys on our way to clinching a playoff spot. I understand that FedEx is an NFL sponsor and appreciate many times over them recognizing the great work of Clinton Portis -- and thanks a mil(lions and millions) for purchasing the naming rights of the stadium, too, because it would totally suck if we named the stadium after some Redskin legend instead so that we could claim them with pride everytime someone announced our home games, whatever. But since FedEx is effectively a mailing service it seems strange to identify great play with mailing it in, a euphemism typically reserved for the way the Cowboys played last week, and not how Portis played last week. Anyways... Portis was voted the award by fans on NFL.com. Along with the award, FedEx will donate $5,000 to a local Washington, D.C., children's hospital. Portis rushed for 104 yards and two touchdowns on 25 ca...

Clinton Portis, best offensive player in the entire world (NFC) ever (this
2007-12-27 21:23:00 Per the Official Site: Clinton Portis has been named NFC Offensive Player of the Week for his performance in the Redskins' 32-21 victory over the Minnesota Vikings last Sunday. Why? 126 total yards (76 rushing, 48 receiving) with a touchdown under must-win conditions. Oh yea, he also went 1 of 1 for 15 yards and a touchdown on a pass to Antwaan. Portis was a man on fire for the past two weeks helping the Redskins towards victory in quintessential Joe Gibbs fashion. The Post takes a moment to honor both Portis and Moss (hat tipped to Blogging the Boys, where you should all go for Cowboys updates this week): Inspired by the memory of former Redskins safety Sean Taylor, Moss and Portis have assumed more responsibility and leadership, many teammates said, since Taylor was killed by intruders last month in his Miami area home. Although the entire team has dedicated the season to Taylor, Moss and Portis have extra incentive to help the Redskins succeed because of the bond the three share...

2007-12-26 18:18:00 Can anyone explain to me why this idiot dresses up in costumes for his press conferences? Clinton Portis looks familiar
2007-12-17 16:56:00 Carrying this team to the playoffs, perhaps? The defense splits the game ball with CP, he of the 126 yards on 25 carries (over 5 YPC) and a touchdown, they of holding the Giants to 10 points. Admittedly, help arrived in the form of chronic dropsies by the Giants but even with some of those catches it isn't obvious that New York scores 23 points. We'll do this offense this morning, the defense later. Quarterback: Todd Collins set a record by going 10 years and 2 days without a start, the longest start-drought in NFL history. And while he didn't play the best game, the good guys won. The important stat here is that although he wasn't completing more than a 1/3rd of his passes, he was moving the ball semi-efficiently when he did complete them. On 8 of 25 he managed just 166 yards, but that's still 6.64 YPA. Eli, by comparison, went 18/52 for 184 yards: 3.55 YPA. I also felt that was an abnormally high amount of passes to call given the weather. Offensive Line: Couldn't be happier...

Ladell Betts vs. Clinton Portis
2007-10-29 23:00:00 Here we go, two of my favorite blogs suggested a shift in favor of Ladell Betts to varying degrees so it's time we at least talked about it. I don't have, at this immediate moment, an opinion one way or the other, though perhaps I will by the end. First, from Redskins Insider: All We Are Say-ing, Is Give Betts a Chance: Waiting for a cogent argument to appear about why Portis must be the bell cow. How's that been working out for half a season? This smells like the loyalty gone awry with Brunell and John Hall from years past. Give Ladell a quarter and let him get going. Portis is averaging 3.4 per carry since Week 1 and his production is slipping by the week. You gave Betts that contract for a reason right? You'd have a hard time convincing me that if you took a vote of the offensive position coaches, they'd be all for giving Betts the ball much more, but this is Joe Gibbs's show and he's the ultimate Portis guy. Portis is 23rd in the NFL in rushing. At the end here Jason seem...

Clinton Portis is fine (or close to it)
2007-10-03 02:29:00 The tendinitis is back! Actually, thankfully not: Bubba Tyer just came in to clarify Clinton's injury. Yesterday Coach Joe said that Clinton had suffered another bout of tendinitis in his right knee, but that was incorrect. Gibbs was assuming that was the case, according to the club, and misspoke, but Bubba just told us that Clinton actually has a bruise and a sprained right knee (grade 1, the most minor sprain possible), suffered in the first quarter of the Giants game. When asked if that injury would have prevented Portis from making those last carries, Bubba said not specificually, since Clinton had been playing with the soreness all game and was not to his knowledge pulled out of the game because of the knee. Recurring knee tendinitis might've been all I could handle without puking over the keyboard, what with the additional additional injury to Santana Moss which has kept him out of practice. As clever commenter Geoff at Covering The Redskins pointed out: Bram, it might be ea...

Clinton Portis spits truth
2007-09-27 07:03:00 Update [2007-9-27 11:4:51 by Skin Patrol]: Ryan Wilson was in front of me on this story and, always, makes a whole lot more sense analyzing it than yours truly. This is all Dan Steinberg tracking down the audio although it can also be found, somewhere, at Extreme Skins. Word is that former Redskins running back Brian Mitchell, co-host of Redskins Post Game Live and former host of The Brian Mitchell Show, who also happens to speak strongly and negatively about the Redskins frequently (perhaps warranted, perhaps not), recently interviewed Clinton Portis. And would you believe it, CP felt the need to get super honest (and speak in the third person): Brian Mitchell: Now Clinton, I understand what you just said, but do you understand why people are asking the question, why weren't you in there, because they see you as the main guy, the guy that they know can get things done... Portis (to BM): I would have loved to be in, but you can't satisfy everybody. I mean, you're one of Porti...

Miraculously, Clinton Portis is ok
2007-09-07 00:33:00 I think we all could've seen this coming but Clinton Portis is OK!: Clinton Portis says he feels no discomfort in his knee and that he will play in this Sunday's season opener against the Miami Dolphins. "Sunday, September the 9th...FedExField...Washington Redskins-Miami Dolphins...Clinton Portis will be there," Portis told reporters after Thursday's practice at Redskins Park. Portis has been slowed by knee tendonitis most of preseason. He sat out the club's four preseason games, so Sunday's game will be his first game action of the year. He is expected to start. Skin Patrol likes that Clinton Portis is ready to go. Skin Patrol thinks Clinton Portis will not only start this Sunday, but he will score 2 rushing touchdowns. Skin Patrol also recognizes the good news, per Portis, that practice isn't really important: "It's the first game of the season for everyone in the NFL," he said. "Until we've played 3-4 games, there's not going to be a player in the league who is in foot...

Clinton Portis interview at Extreme Skins
2007-08-23 20:52:00 Ginormous Clinton Portis interview available here at Extreme Skins and my hat is truly off to SkinsCast's Murph, who conducted it. Outstanding job. Some of the answers Clinton provides I would criticize, but for the most part it is a positive interview. There's an enormous amount of wordage as it is an exhaustive interview, so I'm going to comment on just one of his answers which I felt was especially profound: Last year you were injured while making a tackle during a meaningless preseason game. If you were commissioner for the day, how would you fix the current system? Would you shorten the preseason? Eliminate it completely? Man, you know, if I was the commissioner I'd do a lot different. Like the individuality of the game - you want to sell that to the fans, but you're really not letting the players be individuals. I would change that first and let players go out and have fun. A lot of the things that separate players and show the individuality of players is taken away - l...

Jason Campbell could not play today, Clinton Portis moves closer to the fie
2007-08-22 22:06:00 Same article, two big pieces of relevant Redskins injury news. First: Jason Campbell's availability for this Saturday's preseason game against the Baltimore Ravens remains uncertain. Campbell participated in the Redskins' walk-through portion of practice on Tuesday, but he returned to the team's facility for continued treatment a short time later. From the mustache himself: "If I had to play today, I probably couldn't," Campbell said. "It's hurting my movement right now, but it's only been two-and-a-half days since the injury occurred. I feel like I'm doing well to be moving at the level I am right now." I think he needs some more reps, but I'd just as soon let him play more of the fourth preseason game than rush this thing for this weekend. Essentially I'm saying his being ready for the regular season is a function of reps rather than games played. Or at least that's the position I'm taking given last Saturday's terrifying scare. With Chris Samuels still out I just don...

Just call it a comeback for Clinton Portis
2007-06-13 21:28:00 So sayeth CNNSI.com on Clinton Portis, who hits #9 on the Top 10 Comebacks Candidates of 2007: Clinton Portis | RB, Redsksins 9 of 10 Portis injured his shoulder in the Redskins' first preseason game and was never 100 percent. He played in eight games before breaking his hand, which ended his season. Portis has had other minor health issues, but he should be healthy enough to have another 1,200-yard-plus season. 1,200? Pfffffft, that's low; the only thing that's kept CP from rushing for less than 1,300 yards in a single season is injury. Prior to last year he'd hit 1,500 yards 75% of the time and "only" squeaked out 1,315 (2004) in virtue a horrible offense and offensive line, nevermind a general decline in YPC among elite running backs that year. Even on last year's injured YPC (4.1), Portis would need just 317 carries to surpass 1,300 yards. He had 343 and 352 in 2004 and 2005 respectively. Even if you factor in Ladell Betts having a larger role in the offense, Portis is ...

Clinton Portis pledges to continue talking
2007-06-06 21:24:00 Calm down, reader(s), he did it unintentionally. However, as Portis of all people should know, sometimes what you say is not necessarily what you mean. Everyone else is way ahead of me on this story, but in case you missed it Clinton Portis recently recanted his earlier comments on dog fighting and, in my opinion, acquitted himself quite well of his prior statements (for the most part). A couple of weeks ago, when I made those comments, I didn't understand the seriousness behind it... I didn't know it would affect that many people, didn't think what I said was that offensive. But after doing research and seeing how serious people take this, I shouldn't have made the comments. I had no idea the love that people have for animals or didn't consider it when I made those comments... I'm not even a pets man. I've got a fish -- that's the easiest thing to keep up. I've never been into dogs, never dealt with dogs, don't like playing with dogs. But at the same time, there's a lo...

Clinton Portis gives his two cents about Vick and dog fighting...
2007-05-25 18:14:00 Clinton Portis said in an interview that he think's it's cool if Michael Vick was running dog fighting in his house and doesn't see anything wrong with it. Even though it's illegal. Clinton Portis should keep his mouth shut.
The Idiot File: Clinton Portis and Chris Samuels
2007-05-23 17:42:00 I'm a Redskins fan and love Clinton Portis, but it pains me to do this.Clinton and his teammate Chris Samuels need to be called out on their idiotic choice of speaking to the media this week. Both men decided to defend Falcons' quarterback Michael Vick and the allegations that he was involved in dog fighting. In an interview with a TV station in Norfolk, Va, both men made light of Vick's troubles as he is under investigation since a police raid at one of his houses turned up dozens of dogs and items used with dog fighting. "I don't know if he was fighting dogs or not," Portis said in the interview. "But it's his property; it's his dogs. If that's what he wants to do, do it." Portis, a native of Laurel, Miss., added: "I know a lot of back roads that got a dog fight if you want to go see it. But they're not bothering those people because those people are not big names. I'm sure there's some police got some dogs that are fighting them, some judges got dogs and everything el...

My final word on Clinton Portis and dog-fighting
2007-05-23 17:27:00 And then we're moving on. Per Hog Heaven, Running Redskins, AOL Fanhouse, and Covering the Redskins, Portis is on partial damage control over comments made earlier in the week to the effect of: What Vick does on his own property is his business, dog fighting is no big deal, etc. To that end, Clinton apparently went on the NFL Network to clarify those comments. Hog Heaven and others have provided partial transcripts of that interview, and I am indebted to them for that material. Here is what I subjectively decided was the most relevant portion of that: "I wasn't saying that it's OK to fight dogs. I think there are bigger issues in life than what Michael Vick is doing. I think Michael Vick is a positive person in the community and I think you want to take him away for something that, I mean, in life isn't the biggest situation in the world. I think there are bigger things in going on in life than [to be] worried about what Michael Vick do... I mean, hunting is legal. You got sp...

Clinton Portis: Don't believe everything you hear (me say)
2007-05-22 22:18:00 Hat tip to AOL Fanhouse who tracked down the official statement somehow or someway. Despite it showing up on the Official Site, there was no mention of it on the front page from what I saw. Anyways, here's the statement: "In the recent interview I gave concerning dogfighting, I want to make it clear I do not take part in dogfighting or condone dogfighting in any manner." Statement was made yesterday, so that's some damn-fine quick damage control. I have a hard time squaring this with his original statements which were, among others: "I don't know if he was fighting dogs or not but it's his property, it's his dog. If that's what he wants to do, do it. You know?" "[Dog fighting] can't be too bad of a crime." "You take somebody that's doing positive in the community. You take a positive role model and put them behind bars for no reason, you know. Over a dog fight?" (1) seems to condone anything done behind closed doors, explicitly dog fighting. Both (2) and (3) att...

Video: Clinton Portis, Just Shut Up! [David Stefanini]
2007-05-22 01:25:00 Clinton Portis of the Washington Redskins was talking on WAVY-TV, in Virginia about the accusations facing Michael Vick. Here is what the brilliant running back had to say:"I don't know if he was fighting dogs or not, but it's his property, it's his dog....If that's what he wants to do, do it. I think people should mind their business."When the road scholar was told that dog fighting is a felony Portis then said this:"It can't be too bad of a crime."This is one of the dumbest things I've heard from an athlete. Mr. Portis, dog fighting is a felony; for the intelligent impaired, that means it is "too bad of a crime."One last thing of note. Check out the lovely individual, Chris Samuels, to the left of Clinton Portis laughing as Portis is running his mouth. Hopefully there is a suspension or a fine for this.http://img68.imageshack.us-/my.php?image=amerlegendslogo5w-j.gif

Clinton Portis gets tendinitis
2007-05-18 00:15:00 Per the Official Site: Gibbs also updated the injury status of Clinton Portis, saying the veteran running back has developed tendonitis in his knee. All the gruesome details on tendinitis are at wikipedia, like this nugget: Due to their highly specialised ultrastructure, low level of vascularization and slow collagen turnover, tendons and ligaments are very slow to heal if injured, and rarely regain their original strength. Partial tears heal by the rapid production of disorganized type-III collagen, which is weaker than normal tendon. Recurrence of injury in the damaged region of tendon is common. Encouraging stuff. Portis' specific case, though, is no big shakes: Asked about the health status of Portis, Gibbs revealed that the sixth-year running back has developed tendonitis in his knee. Portis visited with Dr. James Andrews, the team's medical consultant in Birmingham, Ala., on Wednesday. The tendonitis in his knee flared up last week. It is not considered serious. "He has ha...

Clinton Portis guarantees an NFC Championship
2007-05-12 00:10:00 Cut the laughter. While the NFC is currently the little sister of the AFC, an NFC championship is nothing to scoff at. Nothing says "I earned the right to get smoked by the AFC" better than a National Football Conference ring, donut, or whatever the deuce they award. No shame in that anyways -- do you really think history is going to forget that Hampton won the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference last year? Not a chance. Back to that guarantee -- hat tip to Ryan Wilson at AOL Fanhouse for alerting me to this notably premature prediction, per the Times (emphasis mine): "I think this year we're going to make a lot of news. We went out and got what we needed. I actually think this will be our year. We're going to be in the NFC championship game. I guarantee that. Whatever that takes, we're going to get there." Bases are covered as there's more than one way to skin an NFC championship -- purchasing tickets, for instance. But you know what? CP is taking us there competitively because h...

I'm not the only one excited over a Ladell Betts/Clinton Portis backfield
2007-03-14 16:01:00 Hat Tip: Blogging the Boys. Sports Illustrated predicted the top 10 Running Back Tandems in the NFL and the two headed Portis Betts Monster landed #3: With Portis hampered by injuries last season, Betts emerged as a star, gaining 1,154 yards while averaging 4.7 yards per carry. Portis will be back this year and the Redskins are talking as if they plan to use both extensively. I agree and let's hope so. Some teams in the league don't have even one RB as good as either of these guys and few -- if any -- have as potent a combination (McCallister/Bush and Taylor/Jones-Drew finished 1st and 2nd respectively). Clinton Portis brings a nose for the endzone and the ability to break big yardage by ripping past the 2nd level; plus he's a vicious pass blocker and admittedly takes great pleasure in laying out would be sackers. Betts is an excellent spell back as capable as anyone of picking up those necessary 7-10 yard chunks. He also happens to be one hell of a receiver coming out of ...

Santana Moss and Clinton Portis restructured, among others?
2007-03-07 18:06:04 Per The Post: the Redskins reworked the contracts of Portis and star wide receiver Santana Moss, converting large portions of their 2007 base salaries to bonuses, which become guaranteed but can also be prorated for cap purposes. The players lose no money in the transaction, and Portis's cap figure went from $7.1 million to $4 million, according to sources, while Moss's charge was lowered from $5 million to $3.2 million. I've already said my piece on restructures and won't bore you with those again. Should be some additional news on cap space making cuts of John Hall and others later this week. PFT says that we're making cap room to go after Dre Bly, which might be a reasonable claim. I will update this thread with any additional cuts/restructures as they come in. Some additional Redskins notes from The Post are worth mentioning: The Redskins have been in contact with free agent guard Adam Timmerman, his agent said, and although some in the organization believe the 35-year-old...
