Is It Time to Give Up on Therapeutic Cloning? A Q&A with Ian Wilmut
2008-07-22 15:28:00
From Scientific American: Ian Wilmut, famed for creating Dolly the cloned sheep, announced recently that he is abandoning the technique to concentrate on a popular new approach: making induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells. Such cells would get around the ethical and legal issues
Horses, Dogs and Cats Cloning

I have an old dog FIDO who I am truly devoted to who is also devoted to me and at 15 years old I consider each new year we are lucky enough to still have him with us is a bonus. While doing some research for my other site I came across a news article about Horse and Donkey Cloning , and on further research found it would even be possible to clone FIDO.Now this got me thinking would it be right to clone FIDO or when it is his time allow his time to pass and remember him for the great companion he has been. The article about horse cloning is here BBC Article First Horse Cloning back from 2003 which covers cloning a very pretty Haflinger Prometea in Italy and a Mule in Idaho. Now the interesting addition to the story is just this year Prometea has given birth to a colt Pegaso, story here Prometea Has A ColtOf course because these things cost money and because of the money in Horse Racing most of the discussions are with regard to Horse Racing , but it does raise a number of other questio...
Cloning Your Hard Drive to Another Hard Drive
2008-06-06 14:15:00
A friend of mine the other day had their hard drive approaching death. It was grinding away and had a number of errors occurring. It was time to replace it. After picking up a hard drive that was almost double the size, he gave it to me as I offered to install it. There are two main things you need to do when upgrading or replacing your hard drive: Installing the drive. Copy over your data. Installing the drive is the easy part. Just open up the case, find a spot that is available and the data and power cables can reach the drive from there. Plug everything in, turn on the computer and make sure it can detect the drive. Duplicating Data From Hard Drive to Hard Drive I had done this a few times before with Norton Ghost, but I couldn't find a trial copy that would let me do it. It was time to look for something else. I ended up downloading the basic version of HDClone. A free piece of software that does the trick. Basically, you just download it and unzip it. There is ...

Regular readers will know about the advantages of T4 DNA polymerase-mediated ligation independent cloning. The fact that it is faster, more efficient and allows easier parallel cloning than conventional cloning has made it my method of choice in the lab. But the technique does have it’s downsides - not least the requirement that existing vector multiple ...

cloning officially started by Google
2008-03-01 01:54:00
in response to post: First Look at Google Health I guess eventually, Google and MS going to collect all US citizen medical records. Google/MS must provide separate userid’s for the login (random id like – 1243et4323e1). They should not use same google/live id’s. and must have to enforce strict password policy. All the medical records must be encrypted. https is NOT enough.  beta apps for medical records? hmmmmm  anyways, if they don't provide best possible security. One way or other, bad people can get more powerful weapons. 10x powerful than nuclear…. how? Either they try to bribe, or force MS/G employees to get the medical records…what they can do with it? here is the one possibility…they could sort it out all heart patients and kill them by making phone calls… there are more better and easier ways than this, but I don’t like to disclose. JG, IMO, I would like to see the final health application to users, no...

CloneZilla : An Open Source Hard Disk Cloning Solution
2008-01-27 03:37:00
CloneZilla : An Open Source Hard Disk Cloning SolutionI'm pretty sure that you're very familiar with a software like Norton Ghost® for hard disk cloning. The things is,this software is a commercial product and you have to pay for it( eventhough there are a lot of pirated version out there..:D ). Here's a good thing, now there is an OpenSource clone system (OCS) solution called Clonezilla with unicasting and multicasting! With the help of DRBL server and network boot enabled client computers, you can now able to massively clone a lot of computers simultaneously.Clonezilla, based on DRBL, Partition Image, ntfsclone, and udpcast, allows you can massively clone many (40 plus!) computers simultaneously. Clonezilla saves and restores only used blocks in the harddisk. This increases the clone effiency. At the NCHC's Classroom C, Clonezilla was used to clone 41 computers simultaneously. It took about 50 minutes to clone a 5.6 GBytes system image to all 41 computers via unicasting and on...

US Company Claims Cloned Humans, Made Stem Cells
2008-01-23 12:02:00
A California company said on Thursday it used cloning technology to make five human embryos, with the eventual hope of making matched stem cells for patients. Stemagen Corp. in La Jolla, California, destroyed the embryos while testing to make sure they were true clones. But the researchers, based at a fertility center, said they believed their ready source of new human eggs would make their venture a success.Other experts were skeptical about the claims, published in the journal Stem Cells. If verified, the team would be the first to prove they have cloned human beings as a source of stem cells, the master cells of the body. There are several types of stem cells. Embryonic stem cells, made from days-old embryos, are considered the most powerful because they can give rise to all the cell types in the body. The Stemagen team said they got five human embryos using skin cells from two adult men who work at the IVF center. They said they had painstakingly verified that the embryos were clo...

Cloning For the Revival Of The Endangered Species
2008-01-21 05:02:00
Reproductive cloning is regarded as having a potential for conserving endangered wildlife species. A recent breakthrough in biotechnology has been the successful cloning of endangered wild Asian ox (Bos gaurus). The scientists have successfully cloned the endangered species by electro fusing fibroblasts cells from the animal’s skin with enucleated bovine oocytes. The genome of the animal was gaurus in origin whereas the mitochondrial DNA was bovine. In the future, the same technique may be used to clone an extinct bucardo mountain goat from preserved cells by using the present day goats as host mothers. Cloning is definitely going to enhance the biodiversity by ensuring the existence of rare breeds and endangered species. The National Institute of Science and Media keeps a close eye on the latest developments in the world of life science. Joel Ball is a well known authority on biotechnology and has many titles published under the NISM name.

The Technology Of Cloning:
2007-12-11 06:22:00
The term ‘clone’ has its etymological roots in the Greek word for ‘branch’ thus highlighting the origin of the biological science of creating a duplicate of a biological organism. You basically are cloning a plant when you grow it from a cutting. Cloning is also used to refer to the occurrence of asexual reproduction in an organism.Scientists have been conducting and closely monitoring cloning activities for years. In 1997, the first mammal, a sheep named Dolly, was successfully cloned by scientists. This development in the field of biotechnology paved the path for growing awareness around this particular field of research. There are three main types of cloning technologies. DNA cloning or recombinant DNA technology, which refers to transferring fragments of DNA from one organism to a genetic element that is capable of replicating itself. Molecular biology is one of the main proponents of this technology.A second type of cloning process involves creating an animal using nucle...
Photoshop Tip: Non-Destructive Cloning
2007-12-03 09:35:00
Photo by Phil Hilfiker [CC by-nc-sa] Cloning is often one of those tasks of necessity that we like to keep to a minimum. It’s a technique that’s hard to do well, and even harder to master. But this post isn’t about how to use Photoshop’s Clone tool — it’s about how to use it non-destructively and in a manner that offers more control over your image. What do I mean by “non-destructive” cloning? Well… cloning is destructive in nature, meaning that it changes pixels. When you change the pixels, you can’t get the original ones back. Destructive editing is worth avoiding because it takes away your ability to change your mind or adjust the edit at a later date. So open up Photoshop, pull in a photo that needs a little cloning, and follow along. By the way, when you see something in parentheses (like this), that means it’s a Photoshop keyboard shortcut. 1. CREATE A NEW EMPTY LAYER This is usually the first thing I do...

Dolly scientist abandons cloning An egg being collected The scientist who controversially created Dolly the sheep is abandoning the cloning of human embryos in stem cell research. Professor Ian Wilmut, of Edinburgh University, believes a rival method developed in Japan holds the key to curing serious medical conditions. The new method creates stem cells from fragments of skin and removes the need to use human embryos. Prof Wilmut developed a cloning technique which involved creating stem cells - which have the potential to be grown into any cell in the human body - from human embryos. Building blocks Embryonic or stem cells are widely regarded as the most flexible ...

XXCLONE - HARD DRIVE CLONING
2007-10-09 18:39:00
XXCLONE is a special purpose file-copy utility with extra features to make the target volume self-bootable (this portion of the operation still requires low-level disk I/O). It is not a disk-imaging tool that treats a disk as a collection of sectors. Much of XXCLONE’s advantages is a result this fundamental difference to its competing products. Features Makes a self-bootable clone of Windows system disk. Supports all 32-bit Windows (95, 98, ME, NT4, 2000, XP). Can restore the self-bootability in many cases. Everyone should keep the Freeware handy for just in case. The Pro version is ideal for daily backup. Supports common internal disk drives (IDE, SATA, SCSI). Supports external USB/FIREWIRE drives (good for a laptop). Competes with Norton Ghost, DriveImage, MaxBlast. Much faster than any of them in typical daily backup. Need not go to the DOS mode. Operates in regular Windows environment. Simple to use by novices. IT professionals think it’s great. Download XXCLONE
