Caylee Anthony Are We A Step Closer To The Truth?
2008-08-29 04:04:00
Tonight on The Nancy Grace Show the newest developments in the Caylee Anthony case were discussed. Aspects of the long awaited DNA test results are beginning to surface. They clearly state that the hair sample found in Casey Anthony?s car trunk were from either Caylee Anthony or her mother, Casey Anthony. The most damning aspect ...
A Closer Look At... The Best Part of "The Lion Sleeps Tonight."
2008-08-28 18:47:00
Sometimes I just hit on a universal truth and don't realize it right away. I did just that when I wrote about "The Best Part of The Lion Sleeps Tonight," a song I have a bit of an obsession with. (But can you blame me? You can? Never mind, then.)I noted, then, that The Best Part was the part where they go Oh, oh, a part I figured was The Best because everyone who hears that song playing sings that part; I extrapolated from that -- yes, I said extrapolated. Just because I make up words frequently doesn't mean I don't know real words, too-- I extrapolated from the fact that everyone who hears that song sings that part, that we could if we got everyone in the world to sing that part, accomplish something.I wasn't sure then, what would be accomplished, but I was sure it would accomplish something. More than would be accomplished by "World Jump Day," anyway, and more productive. "World Jump Day" has the downside of potentially knocking the world completely out of its orbit and s...
Update on a Closer Look At The Best Number.
2008-08-27 17:03:00
Yesterday, I mentioned that I was happy to see that XKCD shared my love of imaginary numbers, but sad to see that XKCD was smarter than me. I also promised a copy of the comic strip that prompted all that thinking, a strip I couldn't post yesterday because it was on my "work" computer. Now that I'm at my office "working," here it is:
Frank Francisco to become Rangers? closer (AP)

Frank Francisco does not have a career save and is 0-for-6 in save opportunities this season, but he will be the Texas Rangers closer for the remainder of this season. With the Rangers trading closer Eddie Guardado to Minnesota on Monday for minor league right-hander Mark Hamburger, Francisco was moved from the set up role ...
A closer look at... The Best Number
2008-08-26 03:24:00
It's always kind of neat to find out that someone out there likes the same things as you; neat, unless, also like me, you think that liking things that are sort of obscure is neat, too, and you secretly don't want people to like the same things because you don't want to share those things with people. I am a walking catch-22 that way -- I want all the things I like to be popular because then I can share them with people and when we both like the same things, say stuff like "I know, me too, right?" but I also would prefer that most things I like be my little secret. Most of what I like tends to fall into that latter category anyway; when you think like I do and like the things I do, there are not hordes of people out there saying I know, me too, right? about those things. Especially when those things are things like The Best Number, which is i, which is the square root of negative one -- a number I picked as The Best to celebrate hitting 10,000 readers a few years back.Very few...

A Closer Look At... The Best Playground Toy
2008-08-22 04:13:00
Sometimes things that seem like improvements really aren't. And sometimes they are. I don't know. It's Friday and I'm feeling both happy and indecisive. This summer, I've been doing what I call "The Baby Workout," which is more playing with the Babies! than it is workout, but nevertheless, I will still eventually write a book about it, and will call the book "Lose Two Belt Sizes While Playing With Your Babies!" and I'll make a million bucks.Because I did -- since June I'm down two belt notches. That's neither here nor there. What is here or there is that as part of The Baby Workout, I put the Babies! into their stroller and then walk and jog to a park near us; we live, it seems, in the City of Parks; then I take a break while they play on the playground, then we walk and jog back, then Sweetie gets the defibrillator and re-starts my heart, then I have a bowl of mixed snacks that includes, sometimes, cereal mixed with potato chips. So you can see that the Baby Workout is c...
A closer look at... The Best Storyline In A Peanuts Comic Strip.
2008-08-20 17:12:00
Want to know how to tell if a comic strip is really good? Really good? You can tell if one is good because it not only makes you laugh -- but also because it transcends the genre and leaves you on the edge of your seat.A few months back, I nostalgically recalled reading "The Best Storyline In The Peanuts Comic Strip," which was the series of strips that showed Charlie Brown covering his head with a paper bag and going to camp, where became known as "Sack" and took on a new personality. One thing I said about the storyline was this: "The beauty of that storyline is not just that it was yet another flash of surrealism in a strip that doesn't get enough credit for being avant garde."That love of Peanuts keeps me reading the strip every day; even though Schulz has sadly passed away, Comics.com prints a new strip each day. There are those who think that a life spent reading comic strips -- or reading and then re-reading comic strips, something I'm doing actually because when I was a...
Mets closer Wagner won’t come off DL on Monday (AP)
2008-08-17 03:53:00
Billy Wagner felt discomfort in his pitching elbow after throwing a simulated game Saturday and the New York Mets’ closer won’t come off the disabled list Monday as expected. Wagner, sidelined with a strained left forearm, threw about 20 pitches in what was supposed to be his final step before rejoining the Mets on Monday, the first day he’s eligible to come off the 15-day DL. A closer look at... The Best Quarterback
2008-08-15 05:05:00
The Best of Everything does have a rarely-used Sports Category; it's rarely-used because most of what I think about Sports ends up on Nonsportsmanlike Conduct!, the AlwaysMostlyRight sports blog for people who love sports but hate sports blogs. But some sports end up here, and one of those was the nomination I put up when Brett Favre retired back in March, picking Brett Favre as The Best Quarterback Ever. At the time, that was more or less the general feeling among everyone: Brett is great, we love him, so long Brett. Now, since he's come out of retirement, everyone's getting on him -- including "Tuesday Morning Quarterback," a writer I usually admire but who in this case piled a bunch of slander on Brett without citing any evidence to back it up. Even The Boy is upset with Brett for wanting to come back. Why? If I were to be the greatest [something] ever -- and I am, I just don't trumpet it -- I wouldn't want to quit doing it; I also wouldn't expect that people would be ma...

A Closer Look At ... The Best Batman Movie... So Far.
2008-08-12 18:55:00
On July 9, The Boy submitted his own nomination for The Best Batman Movie... So Far -- nominating The Dark Knight before he'd even seen it.This past weekend, for Date Night, Sweetie and I decided to see The Dark Knight and I was very impressed. Extremely good movie, I thought. Nicely done, Heath Ledger, we agreed. Great action sequences, we discussed. Even Christian Bale was okay and no longer reminded me quite so much of 'American Psycho', I said-- since ever since seeing that movie I've had trouble watching Christian Bale because I keep expecting him to chop up some hookers. So overall: The Boy was right; but those people who are calling it The Best Movie Ever need to calm down just a little-- remember, everyone was all nuts over Juno, too, and then waited a week and sat down and said Well, that wasn't very realistic, was it? Also, this is VERY good:One final note, who are the people who say The Shawshank Redemption is The Best Movie, EVER? Seriously, IMDB users-- if you...
A Closer Look At... The Best Actor Who's So Lame He's Cool.
2008-08-12 16:44:00
The Best of Everything has a tremendous amount of impact in the world. Not only did the re-examination of Paris Hilton's celebrity prompt Paris to go to great lengths to retain her status as The Best Gossiple, but a mere mention of Tom Cavanagh now has him starring in his own midseason show coming up this year.Tom Cavanagh, you'll recall, was picked back in April (Lame/Cool Month) as "The Best Actor Who's So Lame He's Cool." At that point, Tom (who I like to think of as "Ed") wasn't doing much besides being a part-timer on some show called "Eli Stone," which maybe violates the rule about having only Morgan Freeman play God; I'm not sure because I haven't watched it.But since being named The Best Actor Who's So Lame He's Cool, Tom Cavanagh has picked up the lead role in a series called "Truth In Advertising." TBOE congratulates Tom, and we'll await our commission -- 10% seems fair. Other actors/celebrities/socialites-- -take note: You need TBOE!Is Jim Gaffigan the next celeb...

A Closer Look At... The Legend Of Lime Jell-O
2008-08-11 01:03:00
I couldn't resist it anymore -- after more than a year, I gave in and finally decided to research whether what my friend told me when we were kids was true, so I did the only research anyone ever does anymore, and Googled it, asking does lime jell-o give off brain waves? The answer, according to 'science?" Yes. And they've known this since 1959!The fact that it's posted on the Internet, of course, means that it's true -- right, Wikipedia? (Although, strangely, Wikipedia seems to make no mention of this!)Now, all we need to do is see whether Steven Spielberg or M. Night Shymalan jumps on this first; I can see it going either way: Indiana Jones and The Intelligent Pan-Dimensional Jell-O, or The Gelatining. Frankly, I'm more excited about the prospect of Marky Mark yelling Those Jell-O molds are too close together!Read the original post, The Best Urban Legend, here.

A Closer Look At... The Best Television Detective
2008-08-04 15:35:00
Have I been plagiarized in advance? According to noted physicist Michio Kaku, such a thing is possible; Michio Kaku believes that time travel to the past, but not the future, is possible. He's wrong about that, of course, but he believes it's possible, and if he believes it's possible then it's also possible that someone read my blog, then traveled into the past, and wrote a murder mystery stealing my ideas in advance.See, when I wrote about The Best Television Detective, I mentioned that one possible plotline I'd developed was one in which the detective was investigating a murder, all the while not realizing that he/she is, in fact, the murderer! Then, loyal reader Dorothy H. told me this:Your idea about a storyline of an investigator, investigating a murder, while he, himself is the murderer, but does not know it, has already been done. David McCullough starred as the multiple-personalitied, investigator who was trying to solve the murder mystery. So I did my usual investigatio...
A Closer Look At ... The Best Magazine (Make That Copycat)
2008-08-01 04:41:00
It's one thing to be a fan of mine, as Zooey Deschanel and Mike Ditka are. It's quite another thing to come here, read what I'm doing, and then post lame versions of it on your own website. That's what The Onion did a while back, prompting me to revoke the paper's original nomination and instead make it "The Best Copycat."That did not teach The Onion a lesson, apparently.I wrote about how Katy Perry's "I Kissed A Girl" is a lame attempt to cash in on lesbinism years after Jill Sobule wrote The Best Song About Girls Kissing Other Girls. I did that on June 20.Then, on August 1, over on The Onion's website, "The Hater" posted a blog entry about how Katy Perry's "I Kissed A Girl" is a lame attempt to cash in on lesbinism years after Jill Sobule wrote her song. You know what people should hate? Copycats. So if you want to know what The Onion will write up next, go back and read what I wrote two months ago.
A Closer Look at... A Closer Look At The Best Female Singer.
2008-08-01 04:18:00
Well, now I'm totally confused.Way way back when, I posted "The Best Female Singer" and mentioned how I'd come to like Fiona Apple's voice because of the song "I Need You Like A Drug" which had been on a mixtape a DJ friend of mine made; but I couldn't find the tape and I could never find the song. Then, searching around on Youtube, I found the song "I Need You Like A Drug," only it was credited to They Eat Their Own and maybe to Moffmen. Now, loyal reader Krista, who I would link to but her link is blocked, has done some searching of her own and come up with the song "I Need You Like A Drug," available at this site, and credited to...Fiona Apple. So will someone just please settle this for once and for all? Who sang this song? And what's a Moffman? And why are candy bars 99 cents?
A Closer Look At... The Best Female Singer.
2008-07-30 15:09:00
Fiona Apple became my favorite (and The Best) Female Singer by accident. I suspected as much when I originally nominated her as The Best Female Singer a little over a year ago. It turns out my suspicions were (like everything else I think) 100% correct, because the song that made me like Fiona Apple so much, "Like A Drug," is, in fact, by They Eat Their Own. Here is that song:That song's actual video can be found here; the Youtube entry calls it a "smash hit single," which is a description we in the business would call "inaccurate." Or "misleading." The description also mentions "Moffmen," and is copyrighted, so I'm probably going to be sued or eaten by Moffmen (which sounds like a Sid & Marty Krofft kind of invention) for linking to it. To learn about and hear a song that's the exact opposite, emotionally speaking, of "Like A Drug," click here. Or go check the alphabetical listing of everything that's ever been considered The Best.
A closer look at... The Banjo and Mike Oldfield (plus I use the word "syzyg
2008-07-29 16:50:00
Back in April, I examined at length the concept of things that are so lame, they're cool -- they go around the Coolness Continuum and move from Lame to Cool again.Things like the banjo, The Best Instrument That's So Lame It's Cool. The other day, I happened to hear a song I didn't even realize was on my iPod, but there it was: Moonshine, by Mike Oldfield:This is sort of a syzygy of Bests; it's proof that the banjo really is cool; Mike Oldfield creates great music and now it turns out he creates great music using the banjo. PLUS, Mike Oldfield already was nominated for Best Instrumental Song (Which Isn't Really An Instrumental) so now he figures into two Bests,PLUS-ER, Mike Oldfield wrote the music for The Exorcist, which is about the devil, which means that Mike Oldfield figures into two separate Best nominations and a whole theme week now, too.Based on all that, I'm going to go ahead and say that Mike Oldfield is a SuperBest; and also that the banjo is clearly one tool that c...
