Death, Taxes & Closer Turnover: Jenks is done
2009-09-23 18:12:00
A couple quick closer notes before I lock myself in a convention hall for the rest of the day... White Sox close Bobby Jenks will be shut down with a calf injury.  Time to grab Matt Thornton and his 80 K's in 67 IP.  David Aardsma is suffering from a bit of stiffness in his back.  Mark Lowe was used in his place.  Lowe is not as good an option as Thornton and may not see many more chances if Aardsma's back feels better, but for those desperate for that extra save... Houston Street will get his closers role back.  Thank you Franklin Morales for the solid fill in work. Non-closer news: Disregard my match-up of Freddy Sanchez for Thursday, his knee injury is going to keep him out a bit longer.
Pineiro brings Cards closer to clinching (AP)
2009-09-23 01:59:00
Joel Pineiro rediscovered his midseason form and inched the St. Louis Cardinals closer to the NL Central title. Pineiro allowed five hits in seven effective innings and Cardinals cut their magic number for clinching the division to two on Tuesday night with an 11-2 win over the Houston Astros. Pineiro (15-11) struck out four and ...
Apple taking closer look at battery life in 3.1
2009-09-21 16:00:00
No matter what model we have, it's one thing we've all complained about at one time or another: Battery life. And now, according to Gizmodo, Apple is going to be taking a more active role in troubleshooting some of the issues we're having. The basic gist is that some users will have the opportunity to report their battery usage to Apple for future reference based on their posts on Apple discussion boards. Seems as though people from Apple are sending those people questions to help them figure out the root of the problem....

Haleigh Cummings ? Are We Getting Closer?
2009-09-16 21:23:00
I think that the answer to that question is a resounding YES. Although last nights arrest of Hank Thomas Croslin Jr may not seem intrinsic in the case, it actually might be a catalyst to something bigger. Last Sunday TJ made a comment on the radio program that I did find humorous, but it also ...
RCom Inching Closer To Seal M-commerce Deal With Atom
2009-09-16 14:27:00
M-Commerce has been the buzzword off-late. The Mobi-payment companies are bringing innovations in facilitating m-commerce in India.  Business Standard reports that Reliance Communication may be inching closer towards finalizing m-commerce deal with Atom technologies, a group company of Financial Technologies. The deal seems significant for RCom as BS also reports citing company sources that the telco may very well be looking at earning revenues of Rs.800 crores in the next 3 years. The future course of plans by RCom is to provide inter-operable payment platform to facilitate various sorts of transaction on all its telecom services i.e. including GSM & CDMA. Atom Technologies currently is in forefront for mobi-payment services revolution in India. For Telecom companies like RCom it makes sense to go for such tie-ups as enabling m-commerce on its plethora of services would help it to leverage its core strength. Atom will offer RCom multiple banks (Indian and foreign...

A Closer Look at THE BEAUTIFUL LIFE
2009-08-24 15:13:00
By: Vlada Gelman Last year, Mischa Barton passed on the part of bad girl Georgina Sparks on GOSSIP GIRL, but there’s still a chance that she may cross paths with Blair, Chuck and the rest of the gang. THE BEAUTIFUL LIFE executive producer Mike Kelley, who is “good friends” with GOSSIP producers Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, pitched his idea for a crossover between the two shows at a recent Q&A. It’s not hard to imagine a crossover between the two glitzy, New York-set shows, but the setting for Kelley’s idea is far from glamorous. “Our cast is on the subway, and their cast is on the subway, and the subway shuts down. We don’t necessarily have to cross them. We can tell two stories with them in the background of us and maybe have one or two characters cross through,” Kelley described. “Something like that, that would be an event moment. It would have to be really creative. They don’t need us.” Whether or not Barton will be on GOSS...

The reformed vamp-hater is out for blood--make that claws. If this video tease is any indication, Jason will be hunting down that clawed creature terrorizing Bon Temps. Little does he know it's Mary-Anne. Watch out Jason!...

Let's Discuss the Cubs Closer Role
2009-06-24 22:21:00
Kevin Gregg has had his ups and downs as the Cubs closer so far this season. My post from last night regarding Kevin Gregg and the Cubs closer role has generated a ton of interest and judging by the large number of e-mails I have received at both WGN Radio and Comcast SportsNet many of you want Gregg replaced as well. There are also several of you who don't want to see Gregg switch roles with Carlos Marmol and many of you are very passionate in defense of your position. One comment from "Bad Kermit" says that I am "dead wrong" in my desire to replace Gregg with Carlos Marmol. Well, while Kermit makes some good points about Gregg's performance in high leverage...

RCom Inching Closer towards $600 million Outsourcing Deal with Alcatel-Luce
2009-06-11 08:25:00
Reliance communication would soon be closing one of the largest outsourcing deals in the Indian telecom space which is being pegged at around $500-600 million (Rs 2,500-3,000 crore). The deal would be related to capital expenditures in operations & maintenance. France based telecom infrastructure provider Alactel-Lucent is said to be the frontrunner for the deal.Earlier Unitech Wireless awarded $500 million network contract to Ericsson. The deal may be transferred to joint venture between Alcatel-Lucent and RCom formed in May 2008.RCom is on major expansion plans off lately especially for its GSM service and may transfer some of its resources for better functioning of the contract. The work for bidder would be to maintain RCom’s GSM and optical fibre cable services along with managing and strengthening RCom’s 175,000 km global optical fibre cable (OFC) systems. This strategy of awarding outsourcing deal for maintenance and building of telecom infrastructure falls in line wi...

Reviewing the Women of Summer: NURSE JACKIE, WEEDS, THE CLOSER, SAVING GRAC
2009-06-08 20:14:00
By: Aleks Chan Summer television is all about the girl. Correction: all about the cable girls. Yes, cable has found itself a reliable refuge for film actresses to find work that is ostensibly of the caliber they are used to – thus Holly Hunter as a spry, hedonistic Oklahoma City detective, Kyra Sedgwick as a master interrogator, and Mary-Louise Parker as a suburban pot dealing widow. This month Edie Falco – whose film career is outsized by the grandeur of her work on THE SOPRANOS – and Jada Pinkett Smith – wife of Will and of The Matrix trilogy – join the throes as nurses predisposed to be snappy and impassioned to help their patients. Our attention is first turned to simply suthun’ Kyra Sedgwick on THE CLOSER (returns tonight at 9 pm est on TNT), where she plays “Depewty Cheef Brendalee Johnson,” of the LAPD. If hadn’t already been implied, her character is from the south, which somehow demands such a drawl that half of what she says can hardly be taken seriously....

One winner will be chosen at random and notified via email on June 3, so be sure to enter using a valid email address. Not a winner? THE CLOSER Season 4 is now available on Amazon for only $25.99.

The group that makes anyone that thinks about them smile, SNSD. Sports Korea looked through the members' bags. All the bags contained similar items.Things like an mp3 player, to lighten the day and relieve the stress from their schedules were in the bags. "Smile angel" Yuri was looking after her health by adding in a cute vitamin pill case, and "Cutie" Sunny's bag was filled with pink items. Sooyoung had a diary that was old and worn out. Let's look closer at their bags.>Yuri = Clean and Simple "Smile Angel"Yuri's bag was surprisingly simple. It showed her clean personality. It showed how she likes things clean by only containing things that are of absolute necessity. The bag is a leather bag from "M" company and is black with a gold pattern."I got this bag last year and have been using it since. It is casual but it can match almost any outfit. The pouch, by "B" company and has small things like lip gloss and powder, was used for two years." She said "Whenever I look at the char...

Implications could lead to more effective treatments (and possibly prevention).

A Little Closer Look At Cheney’s Accuser
2008-11-22 18:27:00
Christopher Sherman at AP, last night:: RAYMONDVILLE, Texas (AP) - A county prosecutor who brought indictments this week against Vice President Dick Cheney and others pounded his fist and shouted at the judge Friday during a routine hearing. Willacy County District Attorney Juan Angel Guerra asked Presiding Judge Manuel Banales to recuse himself from the case, which alleges abuse at federally run prisons. Attorneys for the vice president and other defendants leapt to their feet in objection as Guerra pounded the table and accused Banales of giving the defendants special treatment. “Now all of a sudden there is urgency,” Guerra shouted. “Eighteen months you kept me indicted through the election.” Guerra lost his bid for re-election in the March primary and will leave office in January. He was indicted last year on charges he extorted money from a bail bond company and used his office for personal business, but the charges were dismissed last month. Guerra sai...

Karachi Circular Railway: Revival Gets 1-Step Closer?
2008-10-04 10:29:00
Owais MughalThe ?Good?:A small news item appeared recently in Dawn which captured the imagination of quite a few people. The Central Development Working Party (CDWP), a constituent of Government of Pakistan, on September 17, 2008, approved 51 development projects and among them was also included the approval for Karachi Circular Railway. The ?Bad?:On September 23, 2008 another news made it to Dawn that put reality back to the forefront that project still needs approval of Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) and so far it is not even on their agenda to discuss.Despite this hurdle, I am still staying positive because this project was all but dead since 2006. Atleast we have now moved a step forward.and The ?Ugly?:Many of our readers may know the Karachi Circular Railway (KCR) had been in operation since 1969 and got closed down in 1999 after running into huge losses. Numerous paper and political statements have been made since then for the revival of this proje...

A Closer Look At... All Those Lion Sleeps Tonight Videos
2008-09-13 06:33:00
I'm not sure exactly what "Beat boxing" is supposed to be. It sounds to me like when we were kids and we'd pretend to be rappers and would make scratching sounds with our mouths, and while I am very open minded about what constitutes "art" (I'll include pretty much anything except stuff created by Ethan Hawke, and opera), I am not 100% sure that "beat boxing" should be included. Then again, this is actually not terrible:And it also proves the incredible reach of that song -- that a beat boxer who almost could be from the inner city could bond with it over a guy who hosts some kind of morning show indicates that the song "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" has exactly the kind of awesome power I ascribe to it.RELATED: What kind of power does the song have? This kind of power. Also: The Lion Sleeps Tonight as an indie rocker, as a sitcom sing-along, as a family band song, and as a song by a group I have a tenuous connection with.
A Closer Look At... The Best Song That Barely Exists.
2008-09-12 15:28:00
Did you know that there's a machine that can tell what music you like? It's true. I can't explain all the science of it, but there's a program that analyzes music and determined that hit songs all fall into one of six groups and moreover, determined that if a song you like doesn't fall into one of those six groups, it's not likely to be a hit, ever in the world.Tough break, iconoclastic musicians who want to change the world with your sound. You may appeal to 3 or 4 people in the Bay Area, but that's about it for you.See, I'm thinking about music today, because I was listening on the way into work to "The Best Song That Barely Exists," that song being I Am Not Your Broom, and that got me wondering. What, I wondered was the shortest song to ever make the top 40?So I checked it out, because if the lawyering thing doesn't work out, and the writing thing never pans out, then eventually I'm going to move onto my third career option, that of Guiness World-Record Confirmer, s...
A Closer Look At... The Best Fashion Accessory To Tell The World That Altho
2008-09-08 02:45:00
TBOE is not very political (except for Sundays), but that does not stop this site from having a major impact on the political world, as is obvious from what happened recently. On August 12, I posted "The Best Fashion Accessory To Tell The World That Although You Are Smart And All, You Are Still Sexy (Tina Fey Excluded)" mostly because Lisa Loeb had caught my attention because her actually-kind-of-cool song about the 11 planets (when there are really 12) had gotten released. The point of the post was self-explanatory.Like everything else I write, though, that little post went on to have world-shaking consequences, and also proved that John McCain may not vet his vice presidential nominees, but he does read The Best of Everything.Right, Sarah Palin?Related: I also pointed out how a haircut changed the fate of the universe and generated more controversy than I could ever have expected by pointing out how the Olsen Twins are identical.
A closer look at... The Best Celebrity Recipe
2008-09-06 17:27:00
Every now and then, a comment is so great that I just have to post it as it's own entry, and the comment left recently on "The Best Celebrity Recipe" is just that. Here's the comment -- left by Anonymous. Why do this anonymously? A comment this good deserves credit...Nigella Lawson included this recipe in her nigella bites book, and sums up just why it's so good: You?d think, wouldn?t you, that a smearing of a couple of slabs of white bred with peanut butter and mashed banana, sandwiching the lot bulgingly together and then frying it in butter would be at best, revolting. But that?s where you?d be wrong. I have no particular fondness for peanut butter, or bananas for that matter, and a downright shuddering aversion to eating them cooked, but what a genius that man was. This sandwich is a wondrous thing, gloriously exemplifying what cooking is all about: the whole is so much intriguingly, confoundingly more than the sum of its parts. It really works. I wouldn?t turn one down at...
A (Second) Closer Look At... The Best TV Detective.
2008-09-03 15:35:00
If you ever doubted that I am incredibly awesome-rific at spotting trends, pointing them out to you, and then picking The Best of those trends, then set aside those doubts and join the cult of me, because I have proof that (a) I am awesome-rific and (b) TV really isn't that hard to write. When I posted The Best Television Detective last month, I noted that most TV detectives solve crimes these days accidentally. Specifically, what I said is this:The breakthrough, on every detective show I've ever watched, happens exactly the same way: The detective (police or independent investigator) is doing something completely unrelated to the investigation -- playing ping pong or looking down Cutty's blouse or hiding a cat -- and someone says something that solves the crime. Here's where I prove my awesome-rific-ness: The other night (September 1, to be exact) we were watching The Closer, and The Closer solved the crime not once, but twice, and did it by getting not one but two accidenta...

A Closer Look At... The Best Part of "The Lion Sleeps Tonight."
2008-08-28 18:47:00
Sometimes I just hit on a universal truth and don't realize it right away. I did just that when I wrote about "The Best Part of The Lion Sleeps Tonight," a song I have a bit of an obsession with. (But can you blame me? You can? Never mind, then.)I noted, then, that The Best Part was the part where they go Oh, oh, a part I figured was The Best because everyone who hears that song playing sings that part; I extrapolated from that -- yes, I said extrapolated. Just because I make up words frequently doesn't mean I don't know real words, too-- I extrapolated from the fact that everyone who hears that song sings that part, that we could if we got everyone in the world to sing that part, accomplish something.I wasn't sure then, what would be accomplished, but I was sure it would accomplish something. More than would be accomplished by "World Jump Day," anyway, and more productive. "World Jump Day" has the downside of potentially knocking the world completely out of its orbit and s...
Update on a Closer Look At The Best Number.

A closer look at... The Best Number
2008-08-26 03:24:00
It's always kind of neat to find out that someone out there likes the same things as you; neat, unless, also like me, you think that liking things that are sort of obscure is neat, too, and you secretly don't want people to like the same things because you don't want to share those things with people. I am a walking catch-22 that way -- I want all the things I like to be popular because then I can share them with people and when we both like the same things, say stuff like "I know, me too, right?" but I also would prefer that most things I like be my little secret. Most of what I like tends to fall into that latter category anyway; when you think like I do and like the things I do, there are not hordes of people out there saying I know, me too, right? about those things. Especially when those things are things like The Best Number, which is i, which is the square root of negative one -- a number I picked as The Best to celebrate hitting 10,000 readers a few years back.Very few...
