Cloud computing: Get on the ground floor
2009-08-28 13:00:00 "The term 'cloud computing' is nothing particularly new or complicated; it simply means that instead of having software on your home, office or notebook computer, you run applications over the Internet," explains Gregg Early. In Personal Finance he looks at three plays on this trend: Amazon.com (NA-SDAQ: AMZN); Salesforce.com (NYSE: CRM); and Rackspace Hosting- (NYSE: RAX)."It’s the way of the future as computing becomes increasingly mobile. I would point out that I’m writing this article on Google Docs. This document is stored on a Google server farm, not on my office computer. "When I want to access this document -- from my house, office, laptop or mobile phone -- I simply go to my Google account and it shows up. This kind of computing has gone from quixotic concept to ubiquitous reality."From a business standpoint cloud computing is compelling because it means a business doesn’t have to buy softwar...
Cloud Computing
2009-08-25 08:55:00 General term for anything that involves delivering hosted services over the Internet is called cloud computing. Recently this term is often used because the trend of web service providers now is providing services with Infrastructure as a service. These services are broadly divided into three categories: Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS), Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) and Software-as-a-Service (SaaS). These interconnections ...

Is Cloud Computing Detrimental For IT Professional Jobs?
2009-07-24 12:02:00 (Critical editing by Abhishek Kapoor) Nowadays you must have heard about the cloud computing technology that many IT companies have adopted. WATBlog has reported regularly about the whereabouts of Cloud Computing. No doubt its an innovative concept but somewhere it is threatening IT jobs. IDC has predicted that by 2012, investment on cloud service will increase to $42 billion. Analyst firm indicated that as time will pass cloud computing will become more and more prevalent it will replace the jobs performed by IT professionals. There’s nothing to worry, this won’t happen at least for the next few months. As of now SaaS is in and cloud computing is the next level but not its replacement. It is more likely to take five years for any company to switch over. Initially, cloud computing will create new jobs for monitoring infrastructure performance, datacenter operations, shifting to cloud service provider like Google, Amazon etc. According to Mark McDonald, Vice President of...

Cloud Computing, SaaS and Such--Have We Read This Story Before?
2009-05-05 02:30:00 I have this incredible feeling of déjà vu.Cloud computing and Software as a Service is all the rage. In my practice at PJM Consulting, I am very involved in software startup activity. Nearly every new software company that I see today is being built on the Software as a Service business model. It's all the rage--so much so that it appears that any self-respecting software entrepreneur would be embarrassed to start a company using the traditional software licensing model. Even if an entrepreneur was so inclined, good luck finding a VC who would even consider funding such a company. No one wants to look like a dinosaur. It's all well and good--there is definitely a real trend toward SaaS and Cloud Computing, with many good reasons for it. But most high technology trends are initially a bit over-hyped, and tend to get ahead of themselves. In addition, this particular story seems ever so familiar to a tech veteran that's been around for a few of these cycles. The first bit of history t...

Amazon’s Jeff Bezos on cloud computing
2008-05-31 17:20:00 Not to slam our current crop of tech and business reporters, but it’s refreshing to see an interview with a tech CEO done to the point with relevance. Done at the D6 conference, Om Malik Questioned Mr Bezos on how Amazon web services got stated and where it’s going. Om also brought Wall Street’s complete ignorance of the significance of the cloud computing wave into focus. How and when Amazon began its cloud computing effort. Why Amazon has become an innovator with Amazon Web Services and how it relates to their core business of being an online retailer. Whether or not Wall Street recognizes Amazons cloud efforts. Whats next for Amazon Web Services. Whether or not Amazon has plans for a VC fund or for cloud computing startups. (GigaOm)

AMAZON ADDS PERSISTENT STORAGE TO CLOUD COMPUTING SERVICE
2008-04-14 17:11:00 It's just like an unformatted hard drive, Amazon.com Chief Technology Officer Werner Vogels explained. The difference is that it's in the "cloud" somewhere and you get to it through an API. Amazon Web Services executives on Sunday described a forthcoming persistent storage feature, called EC2 Persistent Storage, which they say will make its hosted computing services more flexible and far more reliable. People can sign up for an early beta test program now before Amazon opens it up for a wider release later this year. The service works with Amazon's Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) hosted server offering. It allows developers to set aside a storage volume online, on which people save files in different file systems. This differs from what is available now with EC2 because once a compute instance is taken offline, the data associated with it goes away. With a persistent storage service, data can remain linked to a specific computing instance. Significantly, people can take a sna...

What is cloud computing?
2008-01-29 11:23:00 In the earlier blog post I wrote about how Wipro is going gung ho about cloud computing. Cloud Computing, what is that? Is it something related to the shepherds who flock sheep whole day and count number of clouds up in the sky to overcome boredom? Please excuse me for my ignorance; I know I am dead wrong, because till then I didn’t stumble on this piece of information from Wikipedia. Cloud computing is a computing paradigm shift in which computing is moved away from personal computers or an individual application server to a "cloud" of computers. Users of the cloud only need to be concerned with the computing service being asked for, because the underlying details of how it is achieved are hidden. This method of distributed computing is done by pooling computer resources and managing them via software (rather than by a human). The services requested of a cloud are not limited to web applications, but may also include IT management tasks, such as requesting of s... |
