We have just learned that producer/songwriter Clyde Otis passed away back on January 8 at the age of 83.Otis was born in rural Mississippi and had no early exposure or training in music until he met Bobby Troupe while in the military. After exiting the service, he spent eight years in various jobs while perfecting his songwriting technique.In 1956, while working as a cab driver, he convinced a passenger to give one of his songs, That's All There Is To That, to music publisher Sidney Kornhauser. The publisher liked the song and gave it to Nat King Cole, who took it to number eighteen.Two years later, Otis joined the A&R staff at Mercury records where he became close with Brook Benton, an association that would last for many years. Otis produced and wrote a long series of hits for Benton, including his two duets with Dinah Washington. He also worked with Washington as a solo artist along with Sarah Vaughan, Timi Yuro, the Diamonds and many more of the artists in the Mercury ...
