Big Ten First Quarter Review: Four Big Ten Coaches On The Hot Seat
2009-09-23 03:12:00 Big Ten conference play will kick off on Saturday. For many teams the start of conference play offers an opportunity to start anew after a hiccup or two in non-conference action. For others, the start of conference play has much more serious connotations. For some coaches, the way their team performs this season in Big Ten play will go a long way to determining how secure their job will be once the season comes to an end. For some coaches, another poor showing in a wide open Big Ten title race will only solidify the opinion of those who doubt and strengthen a case for dismissal. These are the coaches who find themselves on the hot seat heading into the...
Twitter coaches list - no Chicago coaches?
2009-08-25 16:35:00 Peter Robert Casey has done a great job of collecting all of the NCAA Division I college basketball coaches that are on Twitter. It as an excellent resource. But none of the Chicago basketball coaches have an account. Where are Bill Carmody, Jerry Wainwright, Jim Whitesell, Jimmy Collins and Benjy Taylor? Coaches that are on the micro-blogging social networking site include Illinois' Bruce Weber, Butler's Brad Stevens, NJIT's Jim Engles and Kentucky's John Calipari (who has 663,649 followers)....
The Big Ten's Best 11: Ranking the Coaches
2009-08-15 22:38:00 The Big Ten is home to "The Vest" and "The Moustache". JoePa and RichRod call the Big Ten home, as well. Will 2009 be better for RichRod and the Wolverines? Then there is "The Zooker", Fitz, and Brew. But, what to call Michigan State's Mark Dantonio or Wisconsin's Bret Bielema? My vote is for "The Stare" and "The Windbreaker".The Big Ten has experienced a "youth movement" in the coaching department over the last few seasons. The retirements of Joe Tiller, Lloyd Carr, and Barry Alvarez gave way to Danny Hope, Rich Rodriguez, and Bret Bielema and the untimely deaths of former Big Ten favorites Randy Walker and Terry Hoeppner gave way to Pat Fitzgerald and Bill Lynch. All in all, seven of...

USA Today Coaches Preseason Poll Released: Three Big Ten Schools Ranked
2009-08-07 15:23:00 The USA Today coaches' poll came out this morning, and of the many Big Ten schools who hope to have special football seasons in 2009, only three cracked the Top 25. Ohio State and Penn State, last year's league co-champions, are both in the Top Ten at No. 6 and No. 8, respectively, while Iowa is the conference's only other representative at No. 21....

Nolan Fired-Singletary to take over-That Makes Two Bay area Coaches Fired I
2008-10-21 04:18:00 Even though we had heard that the York Family were unhappy with the current situation, we would have thought they would have let Mike Nolan finish out the 2008 season. Then the "Winds" began to blow like they always do at Candlestick Point. except these winds had a wisper on them. " We're going to replace Nolan after the Seahawks game" said those winds. Then tonight we heard "Why Wait! let's get it over with Now." My Only concern is This: Mike Singletary is a Quality Coordinator, a Hall Of Fame retired player, and a good decent man. But if you were labeling the defensive play as the main problem with the 2008 49ers team, then why would you promote the defensive coordinator? True, Defense was Nolan's forte. He was the Man that Rebuilt the Giants Defense after the collapse of the mid-to-late 1990's, and brought them to SB XXXV (i Think Nolan had more to do with that team's success then Fast Jimmy Fassel did! Call me crazy but...). So now the Job is Singletary's for the forseeab...
082208-So Low and Solo - Kudos to Good Coaches
2008-08-23 03:18:00 Coaches and managers mean so much in sports. And not just for their tactical moves either. It?s way more than that. Every player has to believe in the manager?s concern for the outcome, his ability to make it so, and for his genuine humanity. So kudos this evening for the 2008 U.S. soccer coach, who had the foresight to convince his team that Hope Solo should be one of them. His name is Pia Sundhage. Don?t ask me to pronounce it. And the same for Jerry Manuel, who makes all the right moves, or most of them anyway.

2 Games & 2 Coaches
2008-05-11 06:18:00 Saturday featured two Eastern Conference playoff games with Orlando hosting Detroit and Cleveland returning home to host the Boston Celtics. It wasn't pretty for Boston or Hedo Turkoglu though. In the Detroit-Orlando game it came down to 8.9 seconds to go with the Pistons up by 1. For some reason the winning play was drawn up for Hedo Turkoglu. Not that he can't score or hasn't won games before, but you'd have to wonder why Dwight Howard can't be "the Man" when it comes to final shots down low. True, there is a "Hack a Howard" going on, due to the fact he can't hit free throws. But he is capable of putting the ball in the hoop when he's down low. Either way, Turkoglu's drive resulted in a botched layup which bounced off the backboard/rim area and gave Detroit a slim victory. Detroit now commands with a 3-1 series lead which they can close out next week.In the late night game it was the Boston Celtics against the Cleveland Cavs. Cleveland came out extremely hot at home...
Danny Amendola Impresses Dallas Coaches
2008-05-07 04:18:00 DallasCowboys.com has a writeup about Danny Amendola, a rookie free agent out of Texas Tech who has been opening some eyes at minicamp and is drawing comparisons to Wes Welker. Playing alongside Michael Crabtree, Amendola was forced into the position of second fiddle, but he had a strong career at Texas Tech with 224 catches for 2,246 yards and 15 TDs. Amendola ran a not-so-fast 4.64 in the forty at the combine, but he definitely looks faster in this YouTube video: And, remember, Felix Jones had a not-so-fast forty time at the combine but is much faster than those numbers would indicate. For a not-so-well-known receiver out of Texas Tech, a bad forty time at the combine is enough to drop you right out of the draft, but if this guy has football quickness, he might just press Miles Austin for a spot on the roster. LITTLE LEAGUE COACHES
2008-04-05 02:18:00 Iv'e been to a lot of little league baseball games and it seems there are always those coaches. The coaches that just screem at the little kids, that yell at the umpires all game and just can't shut up. These coaches should not coach. Iv'e seen a lot get thrown out of games but very few told they can't coach here anymore. Is the lack of diciplinary action the reason for such actions or just bad attitudes. I think its both. The raging coaches affect the players game and attitude toward the sport. Some kids quit because they don't want to play with that coach and some kids make more mistakes because the coach makes them nervous. HEY COACHES IT'S JUST A GAME.

Coaches Gone Wild
2008-03-28 20:17:00 A lot of attention is given to the off the field problems of athletes. Not enough attention is given to the men and women leading the athletes. I’m not skilled in mathematics but I bet if you broke down the ratio, you’d see that more coaches find themselves in trouble with the law than players. I did a quick google news search and was able to come up with five coaches that have been in trouble the last few days. *A Delaware man serving as a tumbling coach has been charged with eight counts of sex offenses against three young girls. *A former Toronto jail guard and soccer coach plead guilty to possession and distribution of child pornography. He allegedly persuaded a woman to sexually abuse her grandchild online. *A former Creighton University softball coach plead guilty in federal court to receiving and possessing child pornography. *An assistant football coach in New York was charged with faking a burglary to hide the fact he stole money earned from a fundraiser. *A fo...

Emburey has signed a three-year contract with the Ahmedabad Rockets, who will be captained by Damien Martyn, the former Australia batsman, and include Murray Goodwin, the Sussex and Zimbabwe batsman, Wavell Hinds, of Derbyshire and West Indies, and Jason Gillespie, the former Australia fast bowler, who is due to play for Glamorgan. Speaking to The Times from Chandigarh yesterday, Emburey said that he was relying on his core of senior players to lift the inexperienced young Indians in his team and added that there was no reason why the league could not coexist with the official Indian Premier League (IPL), which is backed by the Indian board. ?The comp...

Bowa will ignore helmet rule for coaches
2008-02-29 16:42:00 To protest baseball's new rule requiring base coaches to wear helmets, Larry Bowa threatened to march to his work station along the third base line wearing shin guards, a chest protector and a mask the Los Angeles Times reported. "I'll really make a joke out of it," Bowa said.Bowa refused to wear a helmet in the Los Angeles Dodgers' exhibition opener Thursday at Holman Stadium and said he had no intention of doing so in the future. First base coach Mariano Duncan also ignored the rule that stemmed from the death of Mike Coolbaugh, who was struck by a line drive while coaching first base in the minor leagues last season."I'm willing to write out a check for whatever the fine is for every game," Bowa said. "Whatever 162 games is, I'll write out a check for it."
