Question 1: Should Jacoby Ellsbury replace Coco Crisp?
2008-03-27 14:03:00 I thought this was a no-brainer. In fact, I thought this back in September of 2007. But after the mail I got, mostly negative, when I inferred the Coco Crisp doesn’t have the makeup for playing in Boston, I wonder if I am going overboard on Jacoby Ellsbury. Honestly, I was shocked so many people ...

Trade Rumor: Coco Crisp to the Chicago Cubs?
2008-03-10 12:21:00 For the first time in years, the Boston Red Sox are facing a player logjam in the outfield. Since of those players is a top 10 MLB prospect (Jacoby Ellsbury) and one of them is the best defensive centerfielder in baseball (Coco Crisp), platooning doesn?t seem to be an option. That leaves one

On the block: Coco Crisp and Juan Rivera
2008-03-08 15:04:00 Coco Crisp isn't too happy about his competition for Boston's center field job. Today, the Boston Herald reports that Coco is calling the situation "bogus." Why would you want to sit on the bench?" Coco asks. "Why would you want to do that?" Meanwhile, on the left coast, the Angels' Juan Rivera finds himself the odd man out in L.A.'s crowded outfield, but isn't getting worked up about it. The L.A. Times says Rivera wouldn't mind sitting the bench, if it comes to that. "There's no pressure from the owner, no pressure from the fans, no pressure from the media," Rivera says. Both Crisp and Rivera are candidates to be dealt by the start of the season. The Times points out that the Angels could trade Rivera for pitching depth, given that Kelvim Escobar and Chris Bootcheck will start the season on the disabled list and John Lackey and Scot Shields are fighting nagging injuries. As Big Mike noted earlier, San Diego might be looking for an outfielder now that Jim Edmonds is out with ...

Double Drubbing...Coco Crisp Cries Foul
2008-03-08 11:50:00 The Boston Red Sox had a Friday split squad twin slate that turned out to be an afternoon they would rather forget. Wipe that slate clean and turn the page. It was that kind of day. They lost 12-2 to the Minnesota Twins and 7-2 to the Baltimore Orioles. In the Birdie's game, Julian Tavarez was up to his old tricks, going the first 2 2/3 innings and giving up 4 runs. Kyle Snyder followed with 3 innings of work, giving up another 5 runs. Game over, as they say. In the Twinkie's game, Clay Buchholz and Jonathon Papelbon each surrendered 3 runs. The ink on Paps' contract had barely dried, but in no way am I worried about him. He's experimenting with a new pitch, a slider, and spring training is the time for experimentation. But it truly was a day to forget, so I will. There, it's done, erased from my memory bank. Deleted permanently. Caput. Finito. In other Sox news, Coco Crisp has recently been nagged by a sore throat and a dental root canal procedure, but those setbacks clearly h...

Coco Crisp Has Arrived In Camp, But He Is Not A Happy Camper...Yet
2008-02-21 11:52:00 The remaining three players-Manny, Julio and Coco have arrived in camp, on time and in good shape, Sir Manny especially. But Coco Crisp has again reiterated his demand, yes, DEMAND, that he be the Boston Red Sox starting centerfielder. He put it in no uncertain terms. This is from the Hartford Courant, and then I'll be back with a few choice comments of my own. Here you go..."I want to play every day," Crisp said before the morning workout. "I think everybody wants to play every day. If you don't, I think there's something wrong with you. I don't want to sit on the bench. I would honestly rather be somewhere else and play than be on the bench. "I'll take whatever comes and deal with it. It's no knock against Boston. The fans have treated me well. It's ultimately for myself. I think I can speak for anybody, you want to play. So whatever the best situation is for yourself to play is where you want to be."Peter here, and yes, Coco has spoken, and what he said was not at all a su...

Coco Crisp deal could take on new importance for BoSox
2008-02-08 14:15:00 The Boston Red Sox' attempt to trade Coco Crisp may take on a new urgency if they decide their primary internal options — Clay Buchholz and Julian Tavarez — are not the way to go, at least to start the season according to the Boston Herald. A move of Crisp is still considered more likely than not, but now he could become part of a package that would bring the Red Sox another starting pitcher in return. Up until Thursday, the Red Sox had devoted none of their offseason moves to deepening the starting rotation. Schilling was the projected No. 3 starter, falling in line after Josh Beckett and Daisuke Matsuzaka, to be followed by Jon Lester and Tim Wakefield [stats] in some order. Those last two will now likely be bumped up into the Nos. 3 and 4 spots.

Will Boston keep or trade Coco Crisp?
2008-01-30 12:45:00 Boston Red Sox GM Theo Epstein have been very adament about wanting to build with their kids. Now, if the New York Mets can lock up Johan Santana with a new contract, the Sox can do so the Boston Globe reported. Boston held onto its young studs, Clay Buchholz, Jon Lester, Jacoby Ellsbury, Justin Maserson and Jed Lowrie. Now the question is will the Sox deal Coco Crisp or try to keep him as an extra outfielder?

Rangers Rumors: Guardado, Cameron, Hamilton
2007-12-21 22:16:00 MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan has all the latest hot stove buzz around the Rangers. The Rangers are nearing a deal with Eddie Guardado. Everyday Eddie might be a dark horse to close, if he can flash his late season form again. The Reds decided in October that he was not worth $3.5MM, and declined his option. Guardado is 37. The Rangers hope to add some kind of veteran starter. Bartolo Colon and Jason Jennings are still options, but Mark Prior and Freddy Garcia pretty much are not. Sullivan names Mike Maroth, Mark Hendrickson, and Josh Towers as pitchers of interest. Mike Cameron could be an option for center field if he'll take a one-year deal. A multiyear demand would also take the Rangers out of the running for Corey Patterson. Sullivan notes that the Reds want Edinson Volzquez for Josh Hamilton, a possibility he first mentioned three weeks ago. Jamey Newberg doesn't think Volquez would cut it. Other trade options could include Andre Et...

Coco Crisp's Agent Speaks
2007-12-08 06:25:00 Coco Crisp's agent, Steve Comte, supplied all sorts of quotes to the Boston Herald's Rob Bradford. Covelli's not a fourth outfielder, he's better than Jacoby Ellsbury, he's a proven commodity, stuff like that. It was interesting to read, and you can see where Crisp and Comte are coming from. But it doesn't really change anything, because if the Red Sox don't trade Crisp and he wants his $4.75MM next year, he's going to have to live with a reduced role. Bradford mentions that the White Sox, A's, Rangers, and Braves have inquired on Crisp. The Padres, Twins, and Orioles have also been connected to him. showad();

Coco Crisp For Kelly Johnson?
2007-10-26 16:31:00 UPDATE: O'Brien spoke to "a person who should know" with the Braves and this one's not happening. I think we were all skeptical from the start. There's a rumor making the rounds: the Red Sox may offer Coco Crisp to the Braves for Kelly Johnson. Right now this is fourth-hand information - Buster Olney allegedly said it on a radio show on Wednesday, and one Braves fan heard the report and posted a comment to David O'Brien's AJC blog. O'Brien hadn't heard the rumor himself, but found it plausible. This is an interesting proposal to examine, whether or not it's legitimate. Let's try to figure out how each team would view this. Johnson turns 26 in February. He was a shortstop in the early minors, but had become a left fielder for the Braves when he came up in '05. That's an interesting conversion. It was likely tied to his elbow, on which he had arthroscopic surgery in early 2006. The elbow was still barking in May of t...

Coco Crisp (OF-BOS)
2007-10-24 03:42:00 A day after Crisp crashed into the outfield wall on the catch that gave the Red Sox the AL pennant, his knee was "fine." "I believe so," Manager Terry Francona said. "I was real concerned. Everybody's jumping around, and it looked like it was certainly awkward, but he said he was fine."

Randomness Part I
2007-10-23 13:14:00 - A nice article about California Tortilla in Monday?s Washington Post with the following quote, ?Another newly opened restaurant in Reston needs more word of mouth to boost traffic.? Well, I?m doing the best I can to help the word of mouth for the Cal-Tort in Reston, so GO TO CAL-TORT IN RESTON! Of course, reading the article also makes me worry a little bit about overexpansion.- When I was in Utah last week, I learned that Utahns is spelled, well, Utahns. However, according to Microsoft Word, Utahns should be spelled Utahans. - I also learned that someone named Frank Lynch is on the ballot in Utah?s Democratic primary for President. According to Frank Lynch?s website, he is ?the most important emerging national leader since Abraham Lincoln came out of nowhere to transform America.? I?m going to go out on a limb here and say Abraham Lincoln will be slightly more important than Frank Lynch.- Major League Baseball is having a ?Steal a Base, Steal a Taco? promotion with Taco Bel...

Nats Considering Coco Crisp?
2007-10-22 19:14:00 The Washington Post has a couple paragraphs on the possiblity of the Nationals trading for Coco Crisp. Crisp may be deemed expendable by Theo Epstein this winter because of the emergence of Jacoby Ellsbury. Crisp hit .268/.330/.382 this year; the solid power from his Cleveland days has not returned. We can write '06 off due to wrist injuries but Crisp's offense this year was disappointing. The 28 year-old at least played some fine center field defense. He earns $4.75MM in '08, $5.75MM in '09, and has an $8MM option with a $500K buyout for '10. The reasonable contract and possibility for a resurgence might catch Jim Bowden's eye. The Nats went with Nook Logan, Ryan Church, and others this year and received a .255/.321/.382 line. Just tossing a name out there - if Nick Johnson is healthy, is that a possible match for Boston? The Nationals have been linked to the big-name free agent CFs as well - Andruw Jones, Aaron Rowand, and Tor...
