FIFTH COLUMNISTS IN FIGHTER PLANE CHIPS

EDITOR’S NOTES:  What the hell is this? Outsourcing important computer chips used in the next Joint Strike Fighter to China? Where the chips may have a backdoor/disconnect circuit built in to be activated remotely?? Where the hell were the skulls on this no-brainer???? Seeking guest/regular columnists
2008-03-05 14:24:00
Year one of this blog was so easy to publish and post - hundreds of new ideas poured out each and every day. A daily post was almost a regular thing. As the closer the holidays drew near, posting became less and less frequent. Of course, the fact that my wife is now 6.5 months along with our first child may have had a little to do with it, but not really. I am so blessed to be having a son (yes, we found out!) you'd think I'd be fueled to keep writing! The fuel may be the key, as I've kicked caffeine for the most part. Lack of caffeine = lack of creative stimulation. For now, at least.I still plan on publishing a more reasonable weekly post about my love for all things Department 56. I think there is still plenty of topics and discussions to be had - and I'd like to invite any and all of my readers and retailers to become regular columnists or guest bloggers. Simply comment below with your email address and we'll work on some potential blog post ideas. Of course, you can link t...

Columnists in Brutal Attack on Bush?s Gulf Visit
2008-01-22 14:55:00
“[Bush] a Liar, Cheat, Murderer and… Expert in Barbaric State Terrorism” The recent visit by U.S. President Bush to the Gulf evoked harsh reactions from Qatari columnists, who maligned Bush personally and castigated him over his policy. In their columns, they called Bush a “despised guest” and rejected his anti-Iran statements. They also stated that ...

You know, I really try not to look for people like Ruben Navarrette, Jr., as well as Kathleen Parker, Jack Kelly, and assorted other right-wing media numbskulls. However, they seem to return to our discourse with the consistency of cockroaches seeking moisture and food scraps through fissures in concrete. And Navarrette really uncorked a lulu in his corporate media column today on CNN (I?ll get to it in a minute). Now I?ll be the last person to defend Bill Shaheen, the (former) New Hampshire campaign co-chair for Hillary Clinton, who had the following to say about Barack Obama (from Navarrette?s column)? In his remarks, Shaheen, a local attorney and Democratic powerbroker, said he was worried that Republicans would have a particularly easy time going after Obama's drug use as a teenager because he has been so open about it. He contrasted this with George W. Bush, who Shaheen said wisely ruled out answering questions about his behavior as a younger man during his presidential run in 19...

Who're Cong spin docs trying to fool?- P R Ramesh-Columnists-Opinion-The Economic Times: "Who're Cong spin docs trying to fool?14 Dec, 2007, 0400 hrs IST,P R Ramesh, TNNSonia Gandhi's unabashed admirers are thrilled to bits with her hysterical invective — merchant of death — and are touting it as the body blow that could fell Narendra Modi. By making the Gujarat riots — the violence that took the lives of 790 Muslims and 254 Hindus — the central theme of the political narrative, Sonia Gandhi instead of lending a hand, has given it a push. Her charges being what they are, there are now demands that the Congress also start answering a few questions on the Centre’s record on tackling terrorism. Journalism Celebrity Deathmatch: Bloggers vs Columnists
2007-11-08 18:39:00
Partly inspired by Tom Whitwell (and once more cribbing from Martin Belam), I had a look at the Google Reader RSS subscriber numbers for the blogs and columns that the Times (to its credit) provides here. The big caveat - it is only Google Reader. So who wins? The results are impressive for the bloggers. (Although they are not mentioned off the main page - you have to hit a tab at Comment to find them.)Here are the top ten (using rss.xml, atom.xml and index.rdf), and after that their position on the main blog page:Comment Central 238 (1)A Don’s Life 197 (12)Ruth Gledhill 192 (11)Charles Bremner 170 (4)Eco Worrier 168 (10)Technology 138 (17)Formula One blog 137 (21)Peter Stothard 112 (14)Asia Exile 101 (16)Money Central 100 (7)Danny Finkelstein’s Comment Central blog is the clear winner, but Mary Beard and Ruth Gledhill are both right behind.Compare now, the columnists. Poor old Jeremy Clarkson wouldn’t even break into the blogging top ten.Jeremy Clarkson 84Matthew Parr...

Detroit Columnists Are Well Intentioned Idiots
2007-11-01 05:57:00
There was only one sports debate this Halloween—Did Jon Kitna’s costume cross the line? After a Detroit TV station showed footage of Kitna dressed as a naked Joe Cullen, two local Detroit columnists (Drew Sharp and Terry Foster) penned columns criticizing the costume. Sharp specifically chastised Kitna for bringing embarrassment to Cullen and his family by reminding everybody of the incident. He crossed the line this time and owes Cullen an apology, if for nothing else but for pushing that embarrassing evening back to the forefront of local consciousness. I understand that as a local columnist Sharp has some responsibility to address the incident, but by writing a column about the costume didn’t Sharp helped it become a national story and end up doing the same thing for which he criticized Kitna? We can never know what would have happened with the story if Sharp hadn’t addressed it, but the column certainly brought the incident the attention of many people ...
Let's protect players from selfish columnists
2007-10-29 06:50:00
John Canzano is a selfish journalist, a man who is more concerned about good copy than in doing what is right. He?d rather publicly embarrass a young kid in order to get a great column than let the University of Oregon deal with the situation. Canzano also rips into this poor player?s mother for running to his defense. Is that how a columnist is supposed to act, betraying a school he is charged to cover and, subsequently, causing intense scrutiny for a family? After all, it wasn?t the player?s fault that he had inadvertently been arrested twice for driving under the influence of intoxicants. It happens. It?s college. Kids drink. They drive. They miss classes with hangovers. Remember? Good times.Plus, universities know how to deal with this. A month ago, Oregon suspended a receiver indefinitely for what it called a ?violation of team rules.? The university has also suspended two basketball players over the past two seasons. Even the mascot, a duck, could not escape punishment after a f...

Don?t The Nation?s columnists have anything else to write about?
2007-06-24 11:32:00
You can?t pick up a copy of The Nation without reading a column about Thaksin. It?s like an unwritten rule that if there is nothing else to write about then columnists should revert back to taking a pop at Thailand?s ousted premier. On Saturday Veenarat Laohapakakul opened with this: So the deposed prime minister of Thailand ...
Abridged 'Inquirer' Columnists Today
2007-05-20 16:47:00
Apologies to D-Mac for stealing his feature for now...Trudy Rubin: Here goes another column about a world leader (Tony Blair) that will make Bush look even more illegitimate than he already is.Dick Polman: Gee, I can't understand it; marital infidelity was such a big deal to the Republicans when Bill Clinton was president, but now with the presidential election coming up next year and all of that party's candidates "challenged" in that department (McCain, Giuliani, Fred Thompson, Newt if he declares - please do, Newt!), it's doesn't seem to be so important. Amazing.Jonathan Last: And now, a hard-hitting expose on Limbo (dude, when I want to learn about theology, I go to church, OK?).Mark Bowden: Yep, here goes another interesting, well-researched and "sourced" story that has no chance in hell of making the front page of the "Currents" section in this sorry excuse for a newspaper.Michael Smerconish: DIE, MUMIA, DIE!!!Actually, Smerky's latest rant today contained this interestin...
