Strawberry Lemon Thyme Shortcakes Inspired By "Comfort Food", A Novel
2008-06-07 01:16:00 Early last month, the lovely Cath from A Blithe Palate and Stephanie of Dispensing Happiness contacted me to see if I wanted to be part of a foodie book club they were creating, The Edible World. The premise: about twice a year, the book club readers would get a copy of a food related novel with the mission (to read it!), pick a dish mentioned in the book, find a recipe for it, make it and blog about it. Guess what I told them?! Count me in!!! I always need something to read on the treadmill and what better way to exorcise demons and calories than read about them, right?!!Comfort Food written by Kate Jacobs, relates the adventures in cooking and paths of self exploration of a 50 year-old tv cooking show host, Gus, whose ratings are suffering and who finds herself paired with a vibrant young Miss Spain turned culinary school graduate whose claim to fame are cooking snippets on youtube. Gus lost her husband early, taking care of her 2 daughters by opening a sandwich shop without prior...

In truth, I haven’t been doing much of anything—well, I saw a wonderful play on Saturday which was followed by an even wonderfuller meal at Saul in Brooklyn, but after that things began ...

OAMC:Cheesy Comfort Food, Ham & Potato Casserole
2008-04-24 13:40:00 I usually think of this casserole in the fall when the weather is cooling down but it is one of those that the family loves any time of the year, and so when I found ham on clearance at the grocers the other day this was an immediate thought. You can add buttered, ...

We are cursed.
2008-04-16 01:09:00 Jim and I are cursed. I’m absolutely sure of it. The very same day that my back began to feel better than before I got my steroid shot (exactly seven days after I got the shot), Jim hurt his back. When I heard his voice over the phone at work, I assumed that he was calling ...
Two-Week Two-Year Anniversary, Maple Baked Beans, and a Plug
2008-03-21 16:55:00 I like to stretch celebrations out as far as possible. Birthday? you ask; Birthweek!! I reply! Got a new job? Let’s celebrate until you feel assimilated into it! One, maybe 6 months, yeah? Your dog learned to sit? That warrants, what eight, yes eight nights at least of revelry and debauchery. Why not!? Life is ...
Back with a Pot-Roasted Chicken
2008-03-12 02:41:00 I knew I couldn’t stay away too long. As soon as I told you all I’d be taking a little blog-vacation, my computer started to seduce me. Comfort Food: Understanding Why We Eat
2008-03-07 07:00:00 In the quest for weight loss, the diet industry puts a lot of attention on what we eat but focusing on why we eat may be more important. After losing over 70 lbs. permanently and becoming a weight loss coach for others, I’ve found most people have a pretty good idea of what they should eat. ...
Winter Ratatouille
2008-03-04 23:02:00 One of my favorite late-summer dishes is ratatouille. It helps to keep your spirits warm as fall begins to creep in and it’s outstandly satisfying to make. You chop and chop and chop, throwing everything into a big pot to swim together, and an hour or so later the flavors have melded to ...

2008-02-29 18:48:00 Right now, I’ve got a lot of stuff rattling around in my head. The one main thing seems to be “Fuck Microsoft. Sideways. Arroz con Pollo
2008-02-25 22:23:00 Over the past year or so, I’ve learned that my favorite foods are the so-called “peasant” or “country” varieties: simple risottos, stews, braises, cheap cuts of meat, long-cooked vegetables thrown in a pot. It doesn’t matter where these dishes originate from, if a recipe says it’s a favorite of “the people,” “the farmers,” or ...
Comfort Food + A Leap Day Giveaway!
2008-02-24 18:18:00 Winter persists here in Massachusetts, so comfort food is essential. I made Mango Scones last week and enjoyed them with lots of hot drinks. I haven't forgotten about my Homemade Bread Pledge. The Roasted Vegetable Soup made a nice dinner a few nights ago and will hopefully keep me going this week. And something else keeping me going this week is a Free Giveaway! I'm so excited! Read more about it after the recipes. For the scones, I used my Raisin Scone Recipe, but used freshly chopped mango instead of raisins. The baking time was much longer though, closer to an hour.Since I took a shortcut with the vegetables in this recipe, I decided to roast several winter vegetables for a nice soup. I made up the recipe as I went along and based on what I had handy. I tried to write everything down as I was making it, so I can make it again. The measurements are approximations and will vary based on the size of the vegetables and how spicy you like your soup. I never knew that parsnips were su...

Recipe: Golubki, Polish Comfort Food
2008-02-18 16:16:00 The winter is coming to an end here in the Sunshine State (I won’t rub it in that Roberto and I spent the weekend at the beach…), and before it gets too warm in the rest of the world, I thought I’d post about this wintery dish. A few weekends ago we went to visit my mom. It was cold and gray and so she decided we were going to make stuffed cabbage rolls. This is an old family favorite. My Nana had two best friends as an adult ? one was British and the other Liz, was what they called ?Slavic? back in the old days. I am not sure if that means she is Polish, Czech, Ukrainian or something in between. According to my mom, Liz always referred to these cabbage rolls as Halupky. Well, inevitably walking in my Nana’s footsteps, my best friend Jen also happens to be Polish and I knew quite a few people of Polish decent when I lived in Western Mass. Jen’s family and most of the polish people I know call cabbage rolls Golubki. So in honor of Jen, that is what I ca...
Curd Rice with Pomegranates - The Ultimate Comfort Food
2008-02-11 09:28:00 This post is not to to share a unique recipe. Its not even to talk about the memories this dish brings. One main reason is I had a ripe pomegranate in the house with a broken mixie that prevented me from making the smoothie I had originally intended with it. The only other option I could think of was to add it to curd rice. The other reason is, I have started using photoshop (finally!!) after having installed it almost a year back. Also some information about the fruit that I wanted to share. Pomegranate has quickly become one of the most talked about super foods in the past two years. Pomegranate fruits contain polyphenols, tannins and anthocyanins, which are all beneficial antioxidants. On the other hand, pomegranate juice contains high levels of antioxidants - higher than most other fruit juices, red wine or tea. Preliminary evidence suggested that drinking concentrated pomegranate juice may reduce cholesterol. To make curd rice, mix some salt to the curd and mix well. Mix the rice...

Baked Eggs with Polenta with, of course, bacon
2008-01-25 22:23:00 I used to think eating runny eggs was akin to slurping up snot. I was disgusted at “birdies in a nest” and couldn’t stand the sight of a half-cooked yolk breaking open and spilling all over the bread. I wouldn’t touch it. I preferred my eggs as firm omelets or hard-boiled. ...

Thayir Saadam (Curd Rice) - quintessential comfort food
2008-01-25 11:13:00 There is Thayir Saadam* A mix of rice and yogurt, often with seasonings and garnishings - an essential aspect of the traditional south indian meal. And often considered a soporific - eat a meal of rice and yogurt with pickle and soon you'll be ready to take a nap! * A Chennai Tamil term used to denote a boring, dorky, risk-averse person. "Seriyaana thayir saadam!" - a phrase heard when ridiculing someone who goes by the book. And then there is a Milquetoast * One who has a meek, timid, unassertive natureThat sounds like our thayir saadam alright! :) *** Growing up in Chennai, on a primarily rice-based diet, we ended most meals with a dollop of curd rice - often we just mixed the curd into the rice on our plates, sometimes my mum would mix the rice in advance - maybe season it, add some more molagas or even some grapes - every variation led to satisfying flavours. And the longer the rice sat and the flavours seeped in, the better it tasted! Thayir saadam now even seems to have a ...

Quiche for the Blues
2008-01-18 22:43:00 Normally I wouldn’t turn to any food in particular for comfort. Hoppin? John Soup for Good Luck
2008-01-06 17:44:00 I have to admit it, when I first heard that Hoppin’ John was eaten on New Year’s throughout the American South for good luck, I thought it was preposterous. Firstly, the idea that collard greens will bring you good fortune sounds about as senseless to me as owning a money tree plant, (though, come ...
$30.00 Baked Potatoes: Truffled Potatoes on a Bed of Sea Salt
2008-01-04 02:39:00 Celebrating doesn’t have to include going out. Some of my favorite celebrations go on in my lil’ old apartment, with my boyfriend, my dog, and maybe a game of Scrabble. Wine Food Pairing - Live large with Great Wine and Comfort Food!
2007-12-18 14:19:00 What is it about comfort foods that make them, so, comfortable? Is it a personal thing that we bring with us from childhood or maybe a food that we ate while going through tough times? I guess, if that would be the case, then spam would be on everybody's must have list and how do you do wine food pairing with spam?My definition of a comfort food is something we crave to eat when we want to cocoon ourselves in the comfort of "food love", perhaps a good home cooked meal or memories of that special dish prepared lovingly by a friend or family member. Food high in sugar or carbohydrates, filling our bellies and nourishing our very soul seems to fit the bill. I guess you could almost call it a guilty pleasure. One of my favorite comfort foods around the holiday season is ham and cheese scalloped potatoes. My Mom used to make this every year when we had leftover ham from Thanksgiving and Christmas. Of course, potatoes were always plentiful around the kitchen. This rich, wonderful casserole...
Comfort Food: Fried Chicken
2007-12-12 02:16:00 If you’ve never had homemade fried chicken–eaten within minutes of emerging from the oil, glistening and unctous–then I’ve got to tell you, you have no idea what fried chicken is, my friend. Fried chicken is not chewy. Fried chicken should never be dry. Fried chicken skin should be crispy (unless, of course, it’s covered in gravy) ...

Matthew Mayer, a Budding Artist, and Cold-Weather Comfort Food
2007-12-08 23:57:00 Matthew Mayer: The annual Christmas dinner was last night at the College and afterward Matthew Mayer held a concert in the auditorium. I heard him for the first time last year in November and LOVED him immediately. I was so moved that I actually wrote a poem about the experience and later created a layout around it. Nothing has changed...he's was still AMAZING. I bought two more of his CD's to

Another round of comfort food
2007-11-05 07:58:00 After several super hectic days including a trip to DC and crazy work reorgs, a simple meal exuding comfort flavors was what I was craving. I've noticed this often - every time I come back from a trip someplace, I truly crave home food, especially something yogurt-based! Guess the most familiar flavors of childhood are what I want to return to - the stuff I often ate while drowned in a book, especially during summers! *sigh* Well, of course, a slight twist was necessary :) So, instead of brown or white rice, I went with quinoa - usually I use quinoa in a salad or a pilaf - both of which bring out the intense nutty flavor and chewy texture that I grew to love when in Peru. But this time, I did not want any fancy flavor, just something light and nutritious that I could eat with dollops of home-made yogurt and maybe some veggies. I finally went with a chayote squash curry to complement the quinoa+yogurt - perfect! Chayote Squash Curry (2 servings) ==================1 chayote squash ...

Soup - The Perfect Comfort Food
2007-10-19 17:52:00 When you’ve had a long day or are fighting a nasty cold, there just isn’t anything better than a good cup of soup. There’s just something about a bowl of that warm liquid that makes you feel better no matter what happened. Let’s take a look at what makes soup the perfect comfort food, and of course share a recipe for the soup of all soups. You’ll have to keep reading to find out what it is.But first, what makes soup the perfect comfort food? A big part of it is the fact that mom made a good cup of soup for us whenever we were sick, not feeling well, or came in from a long day of playing in the cold. There just wasn’t anything better than a cup of homemade soup – made with love by mom – to make us feel better. Add to that the fact that the hot liquid and the steam that comes up from the bowl of soup help with any cold, and it’s no wonder we associate soup with something that makes us feel warm and comfortable. Now that you know why soup makes you feel so good, why no...
Cabbage koottu - supreme comfort food
2007-10-09 17:08:00 Last night felt like a "home" food night - classic south indian, like my mum makes. Since we didn't get a chance to do our grocery trips this last weekend, I started poking around in the fridge to find something I could work with. A cabbage! Yay! I love cutting cabbage! *so* much of fun :)Cabbage koottu was always a favorite growing up, about on par with onion sambar and mor kozhambu. I love the funny (almost stinky!) smell of cabbage cooking - very nostalgic. Ok, so cabbage koottu it was going to be. I also found some baby brinjals and dutch potatoes that I could work with. I poke around and found this posting on Indira's blog, figured I could rework it a little bit! Thanks, Indira :)Cabbage Koottu (4 servings) ==============3/4 medium green cabbage - chopped into 1"-2" long shreds1 cup cooked tual daal2 T channa dal - boiled till cooked (but not mushy)1 small ball of tamarindsalt Seasoning:----------------1 t sesame oil1 t mustard1 t urad daal2 red chillies1/2 t asafoetida7-8 cu...
It's Fall. How about some comfort food at...
2007-10-09 00:50:00 Comella's... Home of the "Mess", as stated on their website. What is a "Mess" you ask? It's a little (actually quite big) slice of Heaven... a mystery recipe that no one knows. Sometimes it has lasagna, pasta, eggplant, shells, etc. It always has a vegetarian base, with various selections added to it. These pseudo-lasagnas are served as "singles", "1/2 buckets" (which serve 4) and "buckets" (which serve 6 to 8). They have three locations: West Newton, Wellesley and thankfully right here in West Roxbury. This place is the bomb for comfort food. The "Mess", as they call it, is DELICIOUS. Now, I've only had one of these combinations off the menu, but considering how the base sauce tasted and how my "selections" melded together, I am willing to bet the shirt off my back that ALL of these concoctions are great! The dish that we have had twice is called The Paisan's Mess ($10.99/$32.99/$43.99 for the various sizes). It is a combination of "the base", extra shells, extra eggplant (which...
