Until the first preview for Watchmen premiered in front of The Dark Knight. There were only two types of people: Those who had never heard of ?Watchmen? and those who had read Watchmen. Watchmen is one of the most classic graphic novels ever published.  Originally released as twelve individual issues the compilation has actually made Time ...

And, no, your eyes are not deceiving you. I do indeed have three titles that are not DC or Marvel comic books on my list for this week. I am indeed trying to make good on my New Year's resolution and branch out from the DC and Marvel titles and sample some of the titles from the other publishers. Invincible and been recommended to me by several people. As has Noble Causes. And just recently, Stephen from Comic Book Weekness recommended that I give Dynamo 5 a try. All right, it is time to dish out The Revolution's weekly awards. As always, the followers of The Revolution chimed in with plenty of great comments. I went ahead and gave the award for the comment of the week to Mike McNulty, a.k.a stillanerd in response to the Batman #686 review: "As you observed, Neil Gaiman is, in fact, an author of several novels, and not just a writer of comic books (although certainly is Sandman comic book series is considered one of his signature works). He also has written some Batman stories before as well; in fact, this issue reminded me of one he did for Batman Black and White #2 called "A Black and White World" in which Batman and the Joker take a "lunch break" from the comic book and go "backstage" to talk about their roles in the comic. One of the things I got out of this issue is that, by using the "funeral" of Batman, Gaiman is reflecting on the power of stories, which is a common theme in his work. In this case, Batman is not just a comic boo...

This week is heavier with DC titles. I have to admit that this week does not really excite me all that much. The past several weeks have had some big issues coming out. This week is lacking that one or two titles that really has me on the edge of my seat with anticipation. Which DC comic book am I most looking forward to reading? I am looking forward to Nightwing #153 with decidedly mixed feelings. I have been so impressed with Tomasi?s handling of Nightwing. Tomasi managed to do what I thought was impossible and completely resurrect this title. And the best part is how Tomasi has been able to make Nightwing his own man. Tomasi has been able to accentuate the differe...

All right, it is time to dish out The Revolution's weekly awards. As always, the followers of The Revolution chimed in with plenty of good comments. I decided to give the award for the comment of the week to Chicagokmc in response to the Secret Warriors #1 review: "Interesting concept on a few fronts. I agree with some that we've seen "corrupt SHIELD before". This is the pattern Bendis took with Secret Invasion where we find some event has the makings of a huge retcon. So I'll just wait and see with that. This would make Hydra even more powerful than we've seen before, so it is interesting that Norman Osborne disbanded SHIELD quickly and that Hydra allowed that to happen. Sets up some possibilities of Hydra vs. Osborne (ideal) or him even being in league with Hydra." Okay, let's go ahead and check out the nominees for The Che for the best comic book of the week: The Mighty #1 Agents of Atlas #1 Secret Warriors #1 Jersey Gods #1 The Winner: The Mighty #1 Agents of Atlas ...

This week is definitely Marvel heavy. Which DC comic book am I most looking forward to reading? Eh, this is a pretty weak selection of comic books headed from DC today. I am going to go with Mighty #1. I know nothing at all about this title other than the fact that Peter Tomasi is the writer. And that by itself is good enough for me. Tomasi has earned my respect and faith with all of his strong work on Nightwing and Green Lantern Corps. Which DC comic book am I least looking forward to reading? As always, I am not excited to read Trinity #36. And Terror Titans #5 continues to be an unimaginative and shallow read. McKeever has managed to take ...

All right, it is time to dish out The Revolution?s weekly awards. As always, the followers of The Revolution chimed in with plenty of great comments. I went ahead and gave the award for the comment of the week to Ilan the Portlander Rebbe in response to the Final Crisis #7 review: ?After reading and re-reading final crises and shifting through all the online commentary, I am convinced that one of two things is the case. Either Grant Morrison is genius of such unparalleled vastness that it would make Shakespeare and Milton weep, or he decided to knock off early and turned over writing duty to Timmy, an eight year old on acid suffering from severe ADHD. You can see that this is Morrison?s baby, and that his overall vision is rather brilliant. But as they say, the devil is in the details, and in his case, the details go everywhere. The story goes everywhere, and frankly, every plot seemed like it needed its own mini-series. We never get answers to so much. Where and why did Captain...

This week is slightly Marvel heavy. Which DC comic book am I most looking forward to reading? Justice Society of America #23 kicks off the Black Adam story arc. This is Johns? final story arc on the JSA so I fully expect it to be a good one. However, the DC comic book issue that I am most looking forward to reading is Final Crisis #7. Yes, there is no doubt that this event has had its problems. But, the fact remains that I like Morrison?s writing and I am very curious to see what Morrison has in store for us with the ending to this big event. Which ...

All right, let?s go ahead and dish out The Revolution?s weekly awards. Let?s do the comment of the week award. This week I am going to give the best comment of the week to Kirth responding to the Dark Avengers #1 review. Kirth commented: ?So THIS was Bendis' BIG IDEA. The idea which REQUIRED Secret Invasion to happen in order for Dark Reign to "make sense". Yeah. Right. I'm a little underwhelmed. It worked as a story, but I don't see how this "replacement Avengers" story REQUIRED all that Secret Invasion la-la. Oh yes...And once again we see the story impediment know as "The Sentry" poking his ret-conned, way-too powerful presence into yet another comic. Can't he fly into space and..........I don't know, do "stuff" in space with spacey characters and not serve as the plot hole to "drive the endgame truck" through. If he's really Marvel's Superman then have him DO something SUPER. Have him lead or leave, because if this series of comics ends like World War Hulk did, I...

All right, let?s go ahead and dish out The Revolution?s weekly awards. As always, The Revolution got tons of great comments over the past week. It is always hard to pick the best one of the bunch. However, this week I am going to give the best comment of the week to David 2 in response to the Final Crisis #6 review. David 2 commented: ?Let's see... where to begin? How about a revised equation? Unacceptable Delays + Disjointed Storylines + Anticlimactic Battles + (Darkseid - power) + ((Batman + Gun) - Character) + No Real Major Villain + No Major Cosmic Forces + Smallville-level WB/CW Angst + Try To Reason With People That Have No Will Whatsoever + Pathetic God Machines X (DiDio) Squared = ANTI-LIFE I think that pretty much sums up the whole situation right there.? All right, let?s go ahead and dish out The Revolution?s weekly awards. The award for the best comment of the week goes to Joe Average who posted this comment to The Revolution?s review of Ultimatum #1: ?For a first issue, I am tending to like this more than hate it. Most television shows and movies have an opening sequence to "hook" the viewer. Not much story, mostly flash. From that perspective, i like the way this issue starts off. Is it deep or complex? No. Does it need to be at this point? I don't think so. Magneto is one of my favourites so it's nice to see the death of his children really push him over the edge. Granted, if history is any indication, Loeb will eventually drop the ball again, bur for now I give it an 8 overall. Yes, an 8 may be high for the deep thinkers out there, but compared to Secret Invasion, i'm liking this ride MUCH better... PS - HE LOVES YOU? Joe Average definitely liked this issue much more than me, but he gave good supporting evidence concerni...

Oh well, the Duocracy will never allow a third party to win the Presidential election. But, on the positive side, I no longer have to be flooded with political ads while watching TV. And I thought that Shooter did another fine job with Legion of Super Heroes #47. What I like so much about Shooter?s run is his incredible feel for the personalities of the various Legionnaires. This has been the first time since Levitz left the Legion that I felt that the writer actually knew and understood the characters in the Legion. Shooter simply gets it. Ever since Johns and Katz wrapped up their run on this title, we have been getting nothing but filler issues. I was not all that impressed with the filler issues that we got from Dixon. All right, let?s go ahead and dish out The Revolution?s weekly awards. The nominees for the Che for the best read of the week: Detective Comics #848 Nightwing #148 The Winner: Nightwing #148 This week was full of pedestrian reads. Last week we had a crowded field for the Che. Not so this week. Detective Comics #848 was another quality effort by Dini. Both Thom and I enjoyed this issue as evidenced by The Revolution?s review. Dini?s story on Detective Comics is a nice balance to the style of story that Morrison is giving us on Batman. Readers who dislike Morrison?s version of Batman would probably enjoy Dini?s version of Batman. However, I had to give the Che for the best read of the week to Nightwing #148. I might have liked the story itself a bit more in Detective Comics #848, but the artwork was much better in Nightwing #148 than what we got in Detective Comics #848. Tomasi continues to do an impressive job on Nightwing. This is a title that was dead and buried during the O...

I am interested in reading Detective Comics #848. Dini has been consistently good on this title. I am enjoying this current story arc involving Hush. It appears that sanity is returning this week as we have a much smaller shipment of comic books headed to the Bunker. I was buried under the avalanche of the 18 comic books that I got last week and it took me until yesterday to finish them all. Luckily, I get a bit of a breather as it appears that only a mere 10 titles are headed to the Bunker today. This week?s shipment of comic books is slightly Marvel heavy.Which DC comic book am I most looking forward to reading? Trinity #1 certainly piques my interest. Yeah, I know, I?m a glutton for punishment. I have battered wife syndrome and no matter how much pain DC inflicted on me with Countdown, I am going to sign up for their next weekly comic book in Trinity.I just have to b...

Let?s go ahead and dish out The Revolution?s weekly awards. The nominees for the Che for the best read of the week:Batman #677Final Crisis #1Giant Sized Astonishing X-Men #1Marvel 1985 #1The Winner: Batman #677We got absolutely spoiled this week with plenty of fantastic reads. Despite my annoyance over the rotten shipping schedule, I completely enjoyed Giant Sized Astonishing X-Men #1. Now, would it have been nice if this title could have actually met its shipping schedule? Yes. And did Whedon unnecessarily stretch out this story? Yes. But, the fact is that Giant Sized Astonishing X-Men #1 was a good read. Now, for the record I am not nor have I ever been a Kitty Pryde fan. But, I loved how Whedon wrote her in this issue. Kitty?s heroism and sacrifice made me a big fan of her character. Seeing Kitty phase the massive rocket bullet through the Earth was simply bad-assed. And I dig Kitty?s tragic fate. It removes her from the playing field without killing her. Whedon makes it so that an...

I truly love comic books I am normally excited for the newest weekly shipment of comic books. However, tomorrow is different. Why? Final Crisis. I cannot wait. As always, Brubaker served up another quality read with Captain America #38. I already praised this book enough in my review. Suffice it to say that when it comes to consistency it is tough to beat what Brubaker has delivered in the past thirty-eight issues on Captain America.Fantastic Four #557 was another good read. Now, I don?t find Millar and Hitch?s run on Fantastic Four to rival what they did over on the Ultimates. However, that doesn?t mean that it isn?t still a class effort. Fantastic Four may not be anything mind-blowing or revolutionary, but it is certainly an entertaining and well crafted read.Bendis continues to impress with his Secret Invasion back-...

I love it when we get a week like this one. Batman #676 was an enjoyable start to the ?Batman RIP? story arc. Morrison succeeded in capturing my interest with this issue. The Club of Villains is an intriguing looking group of characters. This was a promising start to what should be a complex and well crafted story.Booster Gold #9 was another gem. Johns and Katz have delivered one of the best reads on the market with this title. The way that they are delicately meshing Booster into DC?s continuity has been enjoyable to watch. This issue was action packed and quickly paced as we rush toward the dramatic conclusion of this story.I loved Guardians of the Galaxy #1. DnA turn in the per...

If that is the case then apology accepted.I have never checked out Marvel?s Marvel Kids website, but I finally took a peek at it this week and I have to say that it is pretty cool. Avengers/Invaders #1 was a good debut issue to what should be a great 12 issue series. Krueger is a master the set-up issue since he has a talent for introducing characters in a quick and entertaining fashion.Iron Man: Viva Las Vegas #1 was nothing but pure fun. This title isn?t anything intense, dramatic or complex. Instead, it is just good quality entertainment. This is the type of comic book that puts a smile on your face from start to finish. However, the title that I had to give The Che to is one that I did not even have a chance to review: X-Factor: Quick and the Dead #1. Peter David did a wonderful job with this one-shot issue. David has been pretty much the only writer to ac...
The Overly Ambitious Marvel Movie Line-Up
2008-05-10 23:03:00
Apparently Marvel Comics is punch drunk on a small taste of success. Wow! Talk about a sweet looking cartoon. It appears that Marvel is cramming just about every character connected to the X-Men into this series. I am definitely excited for this cartoon?s debut. My only complaint is the title. It should just be the ?X-Men.?All right, let?s check out the comic books for this week. We have 13 titles headed to the Bunker. Let?s go ahead and dish out The Revolution?s weekly awards. The nominees for the Che for the best read of the week:Action Comics #864DC Universe #0Legion of Super Heroes #41Immortal Iron Fist #14New Avengers #40The Winner: DC Universe #0Last week treated us to an excellent crop of comic books. This was a tough decision for me to decide which issue was going to receive The Che this week. Action Comics #864 was an excellent teaser issue for the upcoming Legion of Three Worlds mini-series. Johns does his job by providing enough back-ground information for newer readers while getting long time readers pumped up for a titanic showdown with the Time Trapper.Legion of Super Heroes #41 was another excellent read. Shooter continues to impress me with his work on this title. I was initially skeptical about DC?s decision to go to an old Legion writer from the 1960?s to revive this moribund title. Well, the old man still has it and Shooter has proven my reservations completely unfounded. Shooter...

Let?s go ahead and dish out The Revolution?s weekly awards. The nominees for the Che for the best read of the week:Batman #675Mighty Avengers #12Thor #8The Winner: Thor #8This was a pretty solid collection of comic books this week. Morrison served up a surprisingly intense and unexpected ending with Batman #675. I continue to be impressed with Morrison?s Batman and enjoy how Morrison is handling Bruce?s character.Mighty Avengers #12 was a great read. I was so impressed with how Bendis wrote Fury?s character. It is wonderful to see Bendis flexing his obvious creative talents and write a unique voice for Fury that didn?t read like a trademark ?Bendis voice.? Mighty Avengers #12 proved two things. First, that Bendis can flat out write the hell out of Nick Fury and if old one-eye ever got his own title then Bendis should be the writer. Second, that Bendis really excels in stories that center on a single character rather than on a team full of characters. However, I had to give the Che for...
Supreme Courts Decides, Graphic Novels Must be Called Comic Books
2008-04-28 01:46:00
The Justices ruled 8 to 1 on the controversial issue. Clarence Thomas strongly opposed. "Are you telling that, the Frank Miller Batman, were he has a hot young girl as Robin, is  not worthy to be called a novel, this is complete B.S." Thomas said before he went to his Washington D.C. apartment which he shares with Colin Powell. Many business are also worried that this decision may lead to violence. "We all have to deal with the guy who masturbates to Rogue from X-men, in the bathroom on his lunch   break, I sure don't want to be the one to tell him that he can no longer pick Punisher as a great character in literature, when we play celebrity at our Christmas party," said a concerned unnamed manager, of a local D.C. business.    The other  supreme  court justices,  are also concerned  for  judge  Thomas's  sanity over the issue. "Him and Colin don't seem to getting alone anymore, and he hasn...

Captain America was another phenomenal read. Brubaker just continues to impress with each and every issue. We are witnessing history with Brubaker?s run on Captain America.X-Factor #30 was another gem of a read. David continues to crank out wonderfully written issues each and every month. I know that the sales numbers will never reflect this, but X-Factor is hands down the best of all of the X-titles that are currently on the market. In the end, I had to give the Che for the best read of the week to Iron Man #28. The Knaufs ended their incredible story arc with quite simply a brilliant double-sized issue. This was a fantastic ending that treated the reader to drama, several stunning surprises and some kick-ass action. Despite a lack of...

The intensity of this story arc is cranked up several notches and the reader gets treated to plenty of action.Nova #12 was a great read. This title has been such a pleasant surprise.
