Politics & Real Estate - Strange Bedfellows
2008-05-16 21:08:00 Real investing is, and has always been, a topic that has generated a lot of interest. Some people are actually accomplished investors while others are dabblers with the remainder being ?wannabes?. That?s the American way and nothing wrong with that unless you fall victim to a real estate hustler. What?s a real estate hustler? If you have ever heard of a fellow named John T. Reed, you will know. A West Point graduate and former Army officer, Reed isn?t exactly your run of the mill dummy. However, he does carry an acerbic pen. To give you an idea, he has a full page devoted to those folks who sell how to invest in real estate courses. He gives you in no uncertain terms who he thinks is a hustler and who he thinks isn?t. As one would imagine, he has both critics and supporters. Personally I like the idea he created his guru rating. It at least gives a broader read on the former late night real estate hawkers. There is an ominous overtone in his pages as well. If you go to his headline...

Pro-Gun Demographics
2008-05-15 15:50:00 This is some spot on commentary: Eating our own First and foremost is getting behind the constitutional right of the 2nd Amendment, because gun control needs to become a non-issue. If the constituencies of both parties reject these inane assaults on our liberties and safety then we can move on to disagree about the other issues. The NRA and other gun rights groups need to shed the image of fat white guys in cammo. The population of rural farmers is not growing as fast as that of urban minority groups. As a practical matter rural farmers are less likely to be targeted for crime and oppression than members of minority groups living in the inner cities. read more

2008-05-15 11:50:00 I guess they haven't learned that the cameras don't reduce crime. London's experiment has not been successful. This is a $1.8m boondoggle with a service contract. That kind of money buys 36 man/years of increased security guards or police.

Commentary: No racism in the presidential election?
2008-05-14 22:10:00 Oh absolutely there's racism in this election. I can prove it: Some want to know why it isn't racist when 70 percent of African-Americans vote for Obama but it is when 70 percent of whites vote against him. The answer has to do with history. Over the decades, black Americans have had plenty of opportunities to vote for white people for president. And they have done so. But this is the first time that white Americans have a chance to vote for an African-American with a shot at the presidency. And what are they doing?Wrong. When you accept that many black folks are voting for Obama because of the color of his skin, then try to twist that into making it sound ok, and when white folks do it, it's wrong, you've made a racist statement yourself. You're being hypocritical in thinking that it's ok for blacks to vote along race lines but it's not for whites. Many are responding quite well. Obama won the votes of many, to borrow a phrase, "hardworking white Americans," in Wisconsin, M...
The Housing Crisis: How Low Can It Get? Pretty Low!
2008-05-14 15:48:00 I’d like to say that this is as bad as it gets. I’d like to say it, but I don’t think that is true. In California alone, just released figures show that last month, 1,000 (that’s one THOUSAND) foreclosed homes were brought to auction each and every weekday–a 44 percent increase just from the month before. Nationally, things aren’t all that much better, except for a few markets. The National Association of Realtors surveyed the prices of existing single-family homes and found between January and March, median prices dropped in 100 of 149 metropolitan areas, according to the Associated Press. Too bad that relief doesn’t really seem on the way. Congress is still trying to come up with some sort of relief legislation that will please Democrats, Republicans and the White House, but credit remains tight and the victims (and yes, many are victims) of what began as a subprime mortgage mess, keep mounting with no end in sight. Brokers will tell you ...

Commentary: Older father, autistic child
2008-05-13 23:10:00 Commentary: Older father, autistic childDate updated: November 20, 2006 Content provided by Harvard Health Publications CommentaryThe risk of autism rises in children with older fathers, according to a study based on a broad sample of the Israeli population and published in the September, 2006, issue of the Archives of General Psychiatry. We've known for a long time that older women (over age 35) are much more likely to give birth to a child with Down syndrome. More recent studies have shown that older men are more likely to father a child who eventually develops schizophrenia. This research adds another serious disorder to the list.Autism's disabling features, which begin in early childhood, include abnormal social development, unusual behavior, and difficulty communicating. Language is usually impaired, sometimes severely. About two-thirds of autistic adults are mentally retarded, and most cannot live independently. The Archives study took advantage of Israel's extraordinarily co...

Real Estate Investing In A Rental Village
2008-05-13 16:37:00 Not too long ago I went to a neighboring town to check out an investment possibility for an investor I work with - rental subdivisions. The owner had built these homes in a college town 15 years ago and they were all basically the same style, cottages — some 2/2, some 3/2, 1400 sq ft and 1600 sq ft, respectively. This particular deal didn’t work out because the owner wasn’t budging on price and the numbers didn’t quite work out — I think he was basically satisfied to sell them one by one unless he could get his price for all of them, but it got me to thinking. If it’s true that rentals will increase for awhile because of buyer caution and lender tightening, these, what I call rental villages, might be a good investment. Two reasons I think they might be a good investment are lower construction costs in this market and lower land cost. I looked online and found a cottage design that to me would be perfect — attractive and not too difficult or...

A bright, cheerful restaurant with 22 covers, it?s a great favourite with visiting businessmen and professionals who enjoy a glass or two of wine with a nicely presented meal.

2008-05-10 21:15:00 In a vertical tasting, different vintages of the same wine type from the same winery are tasted all at once. This emphasizes differences between various vintages. In contrast with a horizontal tasting, the wines are all from the same vintage but are from different wineries. Keeping wine variety or type and wine region the same helps emphasize differences in winery styles.
