Democrats Try to Save Corrupt Committee Chairman?!?!?

Wait a second, what happened to that new era of politics the President promised in his successful campaign for his current office? Hmm. . . and didn’t Nancy Pelosi and her Democrats in 2006 run against the Republicans’ “Culture of Corruption” as she dubbed it. Indeed, after her party captured Congress that fall, she promised ...
The Mechanics: City sued, Bid committee reviewed, Central Area Plan debuted
2009-08-24 16:00:00
Good Monday morning, Chicago. It's been a long, rough year for Chicago politics so far. The fight over the Olympics, privatization, the special election, the schools poor performance and draconian turnarounds, the state budget. I know sometimes it seemed like you were alone; but just know, when you look back and see only one set of footprints, it was Gapers Block's Mechanics that carried you.The IVI-IPO has filed a lawsuit against the city of Chicago over the privatization of the parking meters, arguing that the deal essentially violates state law despite Chicago's broad home-rule authority. Another chink in Daley's armor?Do liberal activists need a real ideology?Mick Dumke, of the Chicago Reader, distinguished himself in a debate on WTTW's Chicago Tonight,...

Cyprus report from the Committee Against Bird Slaughter

Following yesterday’s press release of actions in Cyprus by the Committee Against Bird Slaughter, I’d like to parse through the CABS report in more detail (PDF). It’s pretty good, and begins with this section: The preferred quarry of the poachers is small song birds, principally warblers, flycatchers and robins. They trap the birds either for their ...
Arlen Specter given Chairmanship of Sub-Committee
2009-05-07 20:14:00
Newly minted, and already confused, Democratic Senator Arlen Specter has been given a Chairmanship of a Sub-Committee by the Democrats. Dick Durbin stepped down as the Chairman of the Crime & Drugs Subcommittee to pass the reigns to Arlen Specter (D-PA).This committee oversees about 60% of the justice department according to CNN. More importantly, this puts him dead in the center of the debate on the coming Supreme Court nominations of Barack Obama. This is a big deal!!! Especially interesting as so many of the objections to him are rooted in his cross-examination of Anita Hill during the Clarence "Coke Can" Thomas confirmation hearings. (Speaking of which...There is a movement underway on the blogs to recruit her for the opening on the SCOTUS!)Not too shabby for a man that was just two weeks ago in the minority party. Most spectacular of all is that this was taken from Dick Durbin (D-IL) who is the second most senior member of the party in the Senate. This speaks volumes...

As we read yet again of Barney Frank’s grandstanding over executive salaries while remaining silent over his own cozy relationship with Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, I recall Mr. Frank has an ethics problem which Congress has yet to investigate. As you may recall, while the Massachusetts Democrat served on the House Banking Committee in the ...

Federal Open Market Committee lowers federal funds rate 50 basis points
2008-10-30 01:15:00
Federal Reserve Building, Washington, D.C.The Federal Open Market Committee decided today to lower its target for the federal funds rate 50 basis points to 1 percent. The pace of economic activity appears to have slowed markedly, owing importantly to a decline in consumer expenditures. Business equipment spending and industrial production have weakened in recent months, and slowing economic activity in many foreign economies is damping the prospects for U.S. exports. Moreover, the intensification of financial market turmoil is likely to exert additional restraint on spending, partly by further reducing the ability of households and businesses to obtain credit. In light of the declines in the prices of energy and other commodities and the weaker prospects for economic activity, the Committee expects inflation to moderate in coming quarters to levels consistent with price stability.Recent policy actions, including today?s rate reduction, coordinated interest rate cuts by central banks, ...

Footnote Re Ivan Bell Impeachment by Standards Committee
2008-05-29 22:22:00
Regarding our previous story that we ran on Ivan Bell's imminent hearing before the Standards Committee regarding his conduct being allegedly at variance with the Council's Conduct Code we should have mentioned that Councillor Bell is a "prospective" - or as he tends to put it "perspective" -Independent Candidate for the High Peak at the next General Election. It is also worth pointing out at this stage that we believe the Standards Committee to have been set up by none other than that paragon of official good conduct John Prescott during his time as the Minister for Environment, Transport and the Regions, or possibly as Deputy PM.Although John Prescott was not averse using his offices and official time when in highly salaried position to dally with his Diary Secretary, Tracy Temple, he did not come before his own or any Standards Committee nor did he feel it necessary to resign from his post for using paid time in this way.Is there a lesson there for Councillor Bell possibly? Cllr Ivan Bell falls foul of Standards Committee
2008-05-21 11:28:00
News about Ivan Bell the Controversial Councillor for Old GlossopIvan Bell, Councillor for Old Glossop is not everyone's cup of tea, though he has been elected successfully as Councillor for Old Glossop on two occasions, which is more than can be said about a lot of Labour councillors in their respective wards. He does however walk a political tightrope that carries the threat of alienating both the mainstream and those dissenting voices that are traditionally aligned with the left and green issues. Speaking as a "man of the people" has not entirely endeared him to some of us at this particular hotspot of local political comment, as previous articles reveal, whilst now he has seriously fallen foul of the Council's Standards Officer and is apparently subject to some kind of "impeachment" process if that is the right word.I would have been less than surprised if this "impeachment" had derived from Mr Bell's failure to wear the "bureau" suit look , without tie, as modelled by form...

2008-05-21 02:00:00
Today's hearing on the security of the United States' critical infrastructure was as spirited of a Congressional hearing on cyber security issues that I have seen during my career, and it's clear that key Members of Congress from both political parties are running out of patience and want to see immediately cyber vulnerabilities taken more seriously in the bulk power industry in particular. In a scathing opening statement, U.S. Representative Jim Langevin (D-RI), Chairman of the Subcommittee on Emerging Threats, Cybersecurity, and Science & Technology, said that "I think we could search far and wide and not find a more disorganized, ineffective response to an issue of national security."...
