2008-02-19 11:56:00
Centuries of research has not shown that a decrease of body temperature is a cause for the common cold, even though mums all over the world still tell their children to wear a jacket, cause they would catch a cold otherwise. So what does cause the common cold? It is caused by viruses. There are ...

Mice that catch common cold may provide an effective cure
2008-02-04 11:52:00
Genetically engineered mice, which can catch a cold, are scientists’ new implement to find an effective cure for the scourge of the nasal passages.   Professor Sebastian Johnston, a virologist at Imperial College London, has achieved a success in infecting mice with the virus that results in the common cold.   His work attains significance as this is the first time that a non-primate has caught a cold.   To date, Professor Johnston points out, only humans and chimpanzees were known to be susceptible to rhinoviruses, the main group of common cold viruses. This is one of the reasons why research into possible cures has been so slow, he adds.   The ability to infect laboratory mice with rhinoviruses means that scientists can now investigate how the virus infects an animal other than a human being.   Professor Johnston believes that this may speed up the rate at which new drugs are developed.   "Until now, it has not been possible to study rh...

2008-01-28 19:01:00
Viruses, not bacteria, are the culprit to giving us the common cold or the flu and I don’t want to scare you but these viruses are everywhere, although considered harmless until they land on a host (wow, I must have been one virus magnet). They particularly take a liking to our nasal passages - the ...
Grand Rounds Vol. 4 No. 18 - The All Too Common Cold
2008-01-23 04:27:00
Grand Rounds is the weekly rotating carnival of the best of the medical blogosphere. Each week, a doctor, nurse, patient or healthcare professional hosts Grand Rounds and compiles links to noteworthy posts about medicine. I learned allot this week, while stuck in bed with a yucky, exhausting cold. I slept, I coughed, I ached, and I lost some of my hair. I cried, went to the doctors, took medicine, and spent time online. That describes my week. But in between all that, I learned allot. I learned to "reach out" and allow friends and family to help me. I learned that even if you used to love orange juice and tea, too much of anything can make you sick of it. I also learned that some things just take time to get better. So even though I am not a doctor, I am prescribing myself lots of rest in the next few days and luckily I found all these new health blogs to read while I have some "free time". I found so much information related to colds and flu from my fellow health bloggers. I ca...

Natural Home Remedies For Common Cold
2007-07-20 17:02:00
1.Lemon is the most important among the many home remedies for common cold. It is beneficial in all types of cold with fever. Vitamin C-rich lemon juice increases body resistance, decreases toxicity and reduces the duration of the illness. One lemon should be diluted in a glass of warm water, and a teaspoon of honey should be added to it. This should be taken once or twice daily. 2. Garlic, as well as onion, is sometimes taken for the relief of congestion and minor infections. They are good in helping reduce the amount of mucous in the nasal cavities too. Garlic is also said to aid in the cleansing of the body's blood. And, true or not, it has been said that if you cut several onions in half and place them around your home, you and your family will not get any more colds. 3. Another sure-fire remedy for a sore throat is to gargle with a strong solution of table salt and warm water. Gargle several times a day. The salt helps to relieve that uncomfortable burning in your throat. N...

Echinacea and the common cold
2007-06-26 21:00:00
We mentioned in Another herb bites the dust that Echinacea, a popular herbal remedy for colds, was shown in a study to be ineffective for preventing the common cold. Ref: RB Turner et al. An Evaluation of Echinacea angustifolia in Experimental Rhinovirus Infections. NEJM Volume 353:341-348 July 28, 2005 (free full text) There’s recently a BBC news report on a study to be published in The Lancet by US researchers which claims that Echinacea may alleviate and prevent the common cold. Researchers, led by Dr Craig Coleman from the University of Connecticut School of Pharmacy, combined the results of 14 different studies on Echinacea’s anti-cold properties. In one of the 14 studies the researchers reviewed, Echinacea was taken alongside vitamin C. This combination reduced cold incidence by 86%. When Echinacea was used alone it reduced cold incidence by 65%. Even when patients were directly inoculated with a rhinovirus - the most common cold-causing virus - Echinacea reduced...
Colds And Flu Symptoms - Home Remedies For Common Cold Treatment
2007-05-20 08:10:00

Day 137 | May 17 2007 | Common cold, No cure yet!
2007-05-17 20:10:00
I recently read that there is still no cure for the common cold. Then what do all these 'cold' medicines available off the shelf do? I guess they only provide comfort to the patient and generate revenue for the pharma companies. But, the Indian government (National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) has recently put in price regulations on a lot of drugs, bringing them to the common mans reach. Perhaps India might be the only developed country where most medicines are still available without a proper prescription, and chemist shops are as treated as daily or retail essentials.... Vitamins E And C Effective Against The Common Cold?
0000-00-00 00:00:00
Most people are now familiar with the idea that vitamin C may help protect against and mitigate the symptoms of the common cold, although this theory is by no means universally accepted by orthodox medical opinion But theres now evidence that supplements of vitamin E may also play a role in reducing the incidence of infection; leading some commentators to propose that combined supplements of vitamins C and E may be highly effective both as prevention and treatment
