Community Power
2008-08-24 16:01:00 Losing our Diamond Sponsor 10 days before the conference was definitely a huge blow ($75,000), but it forced us to be creative, and focus our efforts on what makes this conference unique, as Susan and Gadi so eloquently pointed out ? its community-driven nature. The Office 2.0 Conference would not exist without the help it receives from its sponsors, but many early-stage startups cannot afford even our entry-level package ($2,500). In fact, they can barely afford the cost of flying to California today. Yet many innovations come from the smallest companies with the tightest budgets, and we've always been looking for ways to engage with them. The Office 2.0 Launchpad might be the answer. Less than 24 hours after announcing it, we confirmed the participation of 8 companies, and are reviewing another 5. With a little bit more help from the bloggers community, we should easily reach 20 to 30, creating a nice balance with our more established paying sponsors. This is a perfect examp...

Microsoft makes breakthrough in community software ? Offline Forum Reader
2008-08-07 13:47:00 In this era, the importance of social media can?t be undermined. Forums are community avenues where people converge and discuss issues of relevance to them. Forums were preceded by BB software and newsgroups. India, however, jumped this technical cycle and moved directly to forums. The main advantage that forums presented to users was access using browser over internet and searchability.

Community College Student Loan Rates
2008-08-01 18:51:00 As college tuition rates have increased, many two-year college students have been forced to take out loans. Because about one-quarter of two-year colleges do not participate in the federal loan program, these students are forced to take out private loans, which are riskier and more expensive; work while attending school; use credit cards; or, drop out of school. Of those students who completed a community college degree in 2003-04, 33% had student loans; the average amount was $9,061, according to an analysis of federal data by the Project on Student Debt. The American Association of Community Colleges, which represents 1,200 two-year institutions, claims that colleges do not participate in the federal loan program due to concern for the consequences of debt and default for students, especially those who take remedial classes, for whom dropout and default rates are higher. In addition, colleges participating in the program could be barred from other federal aid programs if too many o...

INK_BLAST | SMALL TOWNS ARE TARGETING UNDOCUMENTED TENANTS
2008-07-21 08:58:00 Many small towns and cities are acting like vigilantes and taking immigration matters into their own hands. Close to 90 municipalities in 27 states have drafted -- and a handful have enacted into law -- ordinances that prohibit landlords from renting to illegal immigrants. Penalties have also been approved, making a national policy issue a harsh economic reality for local tenants. Among the cities that have received national attention for enacting rental bans are Farmers Branch, Texas, Palm Bay, Fla., Valley Park, Mo., Riverside, N.J., and Hazleton, Pa. The rental bans essentially turn landlords into federal immigration officers. Because they are not provided any training or supervision in this area, these landlords may escalate tensions.

INK_BLAST | THE TRUTH, THE WHOLE TRUTH?
2008-07-09 08:31:00 As a journalist, I feel I have an obligation to pierce the veil of nostalgia through which many of us remember and imagine our native lands. Sun-swept beaches. Rhythm-endowed mulatas. Colorful ethnic prints. These are part of a stained memory that keeps many of us from embracing and engaging Latin American and Caribbean countries as they truly are. I also take very seriously the task of reminding readers that many of us have become comfortable?some to the point of complacency?with the notion that the umbrella term ?Latino? means we?re a monolithic group.

Eco-city Development: Planning a Sustainable Community
2008-06-23 09:53:00 "Unlike biological communities, cities constitute a kind of artificial ecosystem dominated by human activities, sustained by natural life-support systems, and vitalized by ecological processes. The concept was introduced by Ma and Wang a Social-Economic-Natural Complex Ecosystem (SENCE) (4). The natural subsystem of the eco-city consists of the 5 traditional Chinese elements: metal (minerals), wood (living organisms), water, fire (energy), and soil (nutrients and land). Its economic subsystem includes the components of production, consumption, reduction, transportation, and regulation; while its social subsystem includes technology, institutions, and culture. Urban sustainability can only be ensured by human ecological understanding of the complex interactions between environmental, economic, political, and social/cultural factors and with careful planning and management based on ecological principles. An eco-city is an ecologically healthy city. Tom Gonzales - Commerce One Founder Sues East Bay Community Foundation
2008-06-22 13:04:00 (Story reposted at the request of our own Robin Belker..) Tom Gonzales, the co-founder of Commerce One, has filed a lawsuit to against East Bay Community Foundation of Oakland and to regain control of his son's charitable bequest in order to ensure that the tens of millions of dollars are spent as the younger Tom Gonzales wished. In this, the image of the East Bay Community Foundation has been damaged. The East Bay Community Foundation was originally the receiver of a bequest of $23 million from the Gonzales Foundation, and it was to be controlled by EBCF. But distribution of the money has been on hold until various tax claims involving the Gonzales estate are resolved. In a kind of fit, EBCF elected to sue the family just because EBCF has not received all of the money due to the tax matter. I guess they forgot who it belonged to. But in doing this, the reputation of the East Bay Community Foundation has been damaged because it seems like an awardee can't trust the East Bay Co...

Women on the Verge, June 12 through July 10, highlights ground-breaking new work by leading Latina singer-songwriters. The series focuses on the growing trend of Latina musicians taking traditional Latin musical forms (cumbias, sones, bambucos, festejos, zambas, landos, etc.) and reinterpreting them with modern twists, from free jazz to indie rock, to create their own inimitable sounds. (Think Julieta Venegas, Shakira, and Andrea Echeverri in their underground days.)
Exciting new gated community opens in Americus, Ga.
2008-06-10 22:42:00 The Village at SouthLand Ridge held its open house today. For Americus and Sumter County, Ga., this is an exciting development. This is a first for the area -- a gated community for senior citizens. A few contracts for homes have been signed already, and we can expect to see more as the word spreads. The open house provided an opportunity to tour one of the completed homes. It is stunning. The craftsmanship and attention to detail are impressive. At the same time prices seem quite reasonable: condos from $149,900 to $179,900, and free standing cottages from $167,896 to $213,340. Plenty of upgrades are available, too. Amenities of The Village at SouthLand Ridge include a club house, a lake and a walking trail. There will be a variety of commercial shops in a section of the development. The community is located within five minutes of city shopping, Sumter Regional Hospital East, pharmacies and restaurants. It is 27 miles west of I-75, 1...
