Blogger Who Works In Computer Forensics Claims Obama Birth Certificate Fake
2008-07-05 12:45:00 Im still not sure what to think about this... But Atlas has this story with pictures. As a real forensic computer investigator (board certified, investigated thousands of cases, access to a full forensic computer lab, yadda yadda...) I decided to jump into the fray over the fake vs real discussion a week ago when a friend of mine challenged me to see what I could find (since according to him, the document was clearly a real one). He is what one would call a slightly rabid Obama supporter ? he even has the tattoo to prove it....At this point I was beginning to believe the certificate was real until I resized and overlaid the Decosta certificate on top of the KOS version. All things being equal there was a 3.82% difference in the size of the KOS version vs the Decosta certificate - but again depending on the optical distortion from the scanner this too was explainable. But upon manually stretching them to match edge to edge I caught a glimpse of what I and apparently everyone else ha...

Computer Forensics, Backups and Litigation
2008-03-14 13:00:00 One of my favorite "I forgot to backup" stories. I get a call about 1:00 pm. The customer on the phone is telling me their server computer is down. We tried to reboot it a few time with no results. The customer stated that they had to get payroll completed tomorrow because it was Thursday and if they could not get the payroll out the workers would do bad things to them. I drove for three hours, picked up the server took it to the distributer of the system which was three more hours of driving. BTW the customer told as I am leaving with server that they needed to backup the computer because they had not done so in a month. So if I could handle that for them. What? My major concern with a down hard drive is to get the data off and load on another harddrive and getting the customer back up and running. If the harddrive would not come up or files might have got deleted then would have to figure out how to get the data off. Allot of network professional use compan...
Computer Forensics

Valuable evidence can be found on computers which enable legal professionals to produce evidence which had previously lost, destroyed, hidden, or deleted. Australian Police Want Power To Search Any Computer
2008-03-06 16:33:00 Um, wow. While I can fully understand and appreciate their frustration, I see this as a legal minefield. They may want this power but, I cannot fathom how they would intend to examine systems that reside in another country unless there was a reciprocal agreement in place. From ABC (AU): The New South Wales Cabinet has ...

Stealing office data? Computer forensics can track you down - Singapore
2008-01-26 23:56:00 Stealing office data? Computer forensics can track you down - Singapore Lawyers say all data arising in the course of work belongs to the company and cannot be taken when an employee quits By Nur Dianah Suhaimi WHEN Singapore bosses call in computer forensics experts, there is usually one thing they want: their former employees’ deleted e-mail. Employers suspect that some departing staff try to hide wrongdoings by deleting incriminating e-mail before they leave, while other workers often e-mail to themselves information they want to take with them. But the cyber trail can be uncovered even if a computer has been burnt or thrown into muddy water. And any data put on thumbdrives or external hard drives can also be traced. Anything done in a computer is traceable, said computer forensics experts, but not many people know this and the complacency can land them in hot water. Last week, seven former Citibank employees faced 1,223 charges under the Computer Misuse Act of taking c...
