Really Simple Solutions For Your Kitchen Pantry
2007-04-17 21:58:00 I took a look at Real Simple's website and found this good, basic, information to Arrange Your Pantry By Activity. Sometimes, I know I need simple, basic, advice. Do this and here's why. Point by point, there is advice that makes sense. &-nbsp; &n-bsp; &nb-sp; &nbs-p; As a kitchen designer, I typically think through how my clients will use their kitchen, especially the cooking utensils, small appliances, and so on. There are multiple factors which will determine where your pantry items are stored. As Real Simple points out, it is advisable to take inventory of not only where your specialized activities are in the kitchen, but the frequency of use of the items, having a direct relationship to where the items will be stored most effectively, all having to do with accessibility.  -; - In my own kitchen, sometim...

The State of The Kitchen Designer Blog
2007-04-15 13:19:00 I'd like to say a few thank yous!I started this blog on kitchens and kitchen remodeling, in very early February, as an experiment in another "voice" to my local kitchen design business website. I very quickly LOVED blogging, as I have always also been a writer of sorts! What I did not expect to find via blogging, was the wide open welcome I received from the blogging design community. My very new blog, untested, unknown, has been welcomed in a way that has surprised me, from early on, and I am very touched, and also grateful for the opportunity to run with this great pack of design bloggers! You rock! Thank you to those who have acknowledged my blog in one way or another. I am very proud to be associated with you.Special thanks to the following bloggers: decor8, for making me "blog of the week" last week - how awesome!ShakaDoo, where I am a guest author in Shak In Style and Shak Hammer, in this very innovative blogging concept, one of a kind for sure.Design...

85-piece Swiss Army Knife: Everything But The Kitchen Sink
2007-04-13 16:34:00 This my friends, is 100% real (unlike the Swiss Army Sunglasses hoax). Wenger, the company who manufactures the original Swiss Army Knife, provides this collector’s edition for a whopping $1,200. It features every tool that has ever been included on any of their models. Here are some of the more unexpected tools: Bike chain rivet setter Golf club face cleaner Golf shoe spike wrench Compass, straight edge, ruler Flashlight Laser pointer with 300 ft. range Fine fork for watch spring bars Inflatable girlfriend Okay, I lied about that last one. The main drawback: this thing is so incredibly enormous and heavy that you won’t be able to use any of the tools in the first place. I guess that’s why it only belongs on rich peoples’ shelves. What's On Your Kitchen Counters?
2007-04-12 22:12:00 I like to be surrounded by my favorite things. I just need to have things around, meaningful things,...memories. I'm sure many of you are the same way. It is what puts "soul" in our kitchens. Personally, I much prefer meaningful things than decorative items selected for the design of the kitchen, but, that's also a look that certainly is viable and can be a lot of fun and of great interest, and I will be showing this look as well on these pages.. Here's what I have on my counters and also what they mean to me: A bowl of shells - picked them up at Jenny Lake out west with my husband many moons ago. Wooden sign with lettering on it - picked that up off the ground. It is the side of a herring box. Got it in a little island called Bornholm, when I was 16 and visiting with my Danish aunt and uncle. I knew at the time that I'd have it forever. I can't tell you how long ago I got it. Bottles - many of these were recently acquired as my husband and I found a man wh...

Moody Kitchen Dining Areas
2007-04-11 15:45:00 We talk about the kitchen, and there is lots to talk about, but an equally important part of the kitchen design, whether it is situated in the kitchen or just beyond, is the dining area, also called the breakfast room. This room, sometimes a part of the kitchen, should be wonderful as well, as it is an area in which we linger. As we know, life happens in the kitchen, and often, life's most serious issues are discussed, where else, but at the kitchen table. Here is what we do at the kitchen table, we: &nbs-p; prep food &nb-sp; eat &nbs-p; relate &-nbsp; love &nb-sp; laugh &n-bsp; fight &n-bsp; read &nb-sp; work &nb-sp; plan &nb-sp; spend money &n-bsp; relax &n-bsp; make up  -; &nbs...

Kitchen Sink Morning Muffins
2007-04-08 16:00:00 I have some great muffin recipes--blueberry-lemon, apple-cinnamon, pumpkin-cranberry--but I like these because they feel healthy and taste terrific. Why "kitchen sink"? Take a look at the ingredients and you'll see. Anything and everything gets thrown into these babies until they're so stuffed with good stuff it seemed the obvious name.1 cup all-purpose flour1 cup whole wheat flour1 cup sugar2 teaspoon baking soda2 teaspoon cinnamon½ teaspoon salt2 cup grated carrots1 grated apple1/2 cup Craisins½ cup sliced walnuts½ cup coconut3 eggs2/3 cup oil2 teaspoon pure vanilla extractIn a large bowl mix all the dry ingredients. In a medium bowl separately mix the next eight ingredients (carrots through vanilla extract). Stir the wet ingredients into the dry, mixing only until just combined. Pour into 18 lined baking cups and bake at 350 degrees for 20-22 minutes.***And a few totally unrelated news items:I finally discovered why I like bakery cakes so much--you know, the Costco sheet...

kitchen nostalgia or shredder material #6
2007-04-07 13:43:00 Welcome, once again, to "Kitchen Nostalgia or Shredder Material". Here is what I suppose is trying to be a rustic style kitchen. What really stands out is the lime green countertop. There is a wild and crazy piece of me, deep down somewhere, that LIKES this odd combination of green and very light wood, I'm not kidding. Not that I would design that today, not to worry! That said, NOT with the large, stone backsplash. And not with plaid wallpaper! That's really an odd combination, isn't it? Also, during this time period, it seems so many kitchens had this railing that goes over the top of the cabinets. Here are a few other little observations:the hood - this is a hood design that I am not fond of...the hood projection but with the backer panel meant to tie into the surrounding cabinets. I say just do a whole separate hood and see the wall space around the hood, thus, accentuating/featuring the hood. The little triangular eating area. I think it's nearly non functional. Lo...

Kitchen Cabinet Delivery Day Is Coming!
2007-04-03 22:31:00 The day is finally coming, after all the time, the planning, the labor, and let's not forget, the angst, (just a little bit somewhere). So, what's going to happen? How will it all unfold, and is there anything you need to know? In a word, YES. Here are some tips to make the day go smoothly, and be as exciting as it should be:Start two weeks ahead and review your contract. If extra items were ordered, or any items cancelled, settle up with your designer sooner than later.Note the method of payment on your contract! Is your payment designated to be via bank check? If so, have your funds in order in advance to avoid any unforeseen difficulties.Still 2 weeks in advance, get the day and time of day of your delivery so you can plan accordingly. Be home, or your delivery may not be able to take place if there is no access into the house previously arranged, and as a result, you may be responsible for a redelivery charge. Often, your kitchen is one of several being delivered that day, the...
NKBA - National Kitchen & Bath Association
2007-04-02 23:33:00 The NKBA, as you may know, is the National Kitchen & Bath Association. I've been a member of the NKBA for many years. I also became a Certified Kitchen Designer in 1993.It's a good thing for a consumer to use an NKBA member firm, or a Certified Kitchen Designer to design his/her kitchen. A CKD must meet requirements for educational points during continuing 2 year periods. Being a member of an association, generally speaking, means that the member firm is interested in their industry as a whole, going beyond the narrow focus of their business. The NKBA offers many seminars, multi day conferences, and maintains a nation wide chapter organization. There are monthly NBKA chapter meetings which include a presentation on a different topic every month. The NKBA also co-sponsors the enormous KBIS conference each year, to which I travel to every year. It is a good thing for a kitchen designer to be involved in their industry and aware of new philosophies, products, and design informati...

Is a white kitchen in your future?
2007-04-02 07:28:00 Considering white cabinets: read one homeowner's journal note, on Garden Web.com, who ordered the fashionable white cabinets with soapstone counter tops. I don't think anyone could complain about a pretty white kitchen when viewed on the cover of a magazine, until they get one installed in their own home. Painted White Kitchens will always be classic. In one recent movie, the painted white
How Low Can Your Kitchen Window Go??
2007-04-01 13:34:00 I was reading other blogs and came across this image of a kitchen. There is only the one shot, but I have some thoughts about design and aesthetics that I'd like to share with you. The image is from Terramia, a great design blog I frequent. &-nbsp; &n-bsp; I think what first struck me was the feeling of light in this image. I'd like to focus on the windows and where they are situated. They nearly touch the countertop. This is a major factor in the aesthetics in this kitchen. It appears to be a nearly invisible transition to the outdoors in a very effective way. I assume the window just over the eating area is at the same height. It's difficult to see. To situate the windows as close to the countertop as possible seems relatively easy. Cabinetry is most often 34 1/2" tall, and most countertops are 1 1/2" thick, or 1 1/4", reaching 36" overall in height. So, a thought may be to install the window at...
"kitchen nostalgia or shredder material ?" #5"
2007-03-31 17:02:00 Hello, and welcome to our fifth installment of "Kitchen Nostalgia or Shredder Material". I understand that in some areas of the country, the winters are very long, and spring seems like it will never come. Thus, protection from the elements is taken very seriously, and a necessary consideration. There is some very serious cabin fever going on here, bringing it, um, to an entirely different level!Well, I can say that the brown range is back in style! We're looking today at a resurgance in brown, now called "oil rubbed bronze". The Kitchen Designer says, however, that this new look is NO EXCUSE to revert back to this style of kitchen! The kitchen police will be out in force, dispatched from The Kitchen Desginer blog, should we have notice of infractions. Be very afraid!Besides the interesting look of this kitchen, let's look at a few things going on here and have even more fun:See the small ceiling fixture and the two large pendant fixtures. The lighting is way o...
Tenant with problematic kitchen appliances
2007-03-29 18:18:00 Hello,I'm a tenant living in Central Florida, and am having problems with several kitchen appliances in the house I'm renting. The wall oven's thermostat does not work properly - it generally heats up 100 to 150 degrees hotter than I set on the oven. (It is a very old GE wall oven.). The separate cooktop has two coils which I have to frequently disconnect/reconnect in order to get them to work. The dishwasher recently stopped working (no water enters the dw during its cycle and leaks).I notified the landlord in person, in writing, about these problems. I found out from the maintenance man during his visit to inspect the dishwasher that the landlord might be having financial difficulties and likely won't be able to address my maintenance concerns. What recourse do I have? The landlord has already been notified - can I withhold rent or repair the items myself and deduct the cost from my rent?Thanks,acdc79
Uber Universal Kitchen Design
2007-03-27 22:47:00 The March issue of Metropolis (mysteriously just received today) has a wonderful feature on "Total Access", three European kitchen companies, dedicating their modern design expertise to universal kitchen design, very aesthetically appealing, very cool. Metropolis talks about 16% of the European population already being over 65! The kitchens included in this entry are Snaidero (top/center images) and Valcucine. Up to now, universal design was virtually an after thought design-wise. To me, it looks as if universal design thinking for kitchen ergonomics and aesthetics is clearly ahead of the curve. There is more to learn in this feature article. Better get your copy now, it's almost April!
Top 5 things to do before you hire a kitchen designer!
2007-03-27 13:25:00 I was speaking with a blogging buddy of mine, who mentioned that her parents are planning a kitchen renovation and are having trouble thinking about what to do first. They are at a total stalemate. There are so many issues, so many potential players in a kitchen renovation, I suppose it must be difficult for many to decide just that, what comes first. Well, The Kitchen Designer comes to the rescue! Here are my top five things to do BEFORE you hire a kitchen designer. Get some sort of organized system to make notes in. Whether good, old-fashioned pad and paper, a binder, a software or online program for kitchen organization, begin the process in an organized way. To go one step further, create different categories for your project....one section for cabinetry, one for countertops, one for the contractor, one for the designer, and so on.Do online research for kitchen designers in your area and beyond. This will, and should, take quality time. Don't be afraid to go outside of you...

kitchen nostalgia or shredder material? #4
2007-03-24 14:40:00 Welcome to this Saturday's special vintage kitchen, aka, "Bauhaus meets Disco"! I don't know why, (hmmm) but this one just popped out at me, as I perused my collection of vintage kitchens from the 60s and 70s. I think this kitchen was ahead of its time (for the early 60s), or perhaps was at the cusp of the disco era? You KNOW we need this kitchen lighting in the center of the ceiling! Get out your platform shoes and start dancing! Not a badly planned kitchen, really, although I'd love to understand what's going on with that second island up front, where and how that is positioned in the room. Otherwise, the wall cabinets to the right of the refrigerator should have been equal size sets of doors. I'm not sure I could concentrate on reading a recipe in this kitchen, and I'm also not sure I'd go stir crazy after 20 minutes! Other than that, enjoy!Oh - almost forgot today's bonus feature that I mentioned yesterday! For another vintage treat, from the blog Fabulon, take ...

"kitchen nostalgia or shredder material #3"
2007-03-17 13:44:00 So, here we are with our third installment of "nostalgia or shredder material", ancient kitchens from the 60s and 70s. This kitchen is "Kansas-in-Oz (see the tilted electrical pole in the window-somehow it reminded me of it) meets the Jetsons". As much of the design (seen at decor8) blogosphere is tuning into the color green right now, (also as seen at desire to inspire) and at Design Sponge, plus Happy Mundane and, as we are 4 days away from spring (forgetting the ice storm we had last night) it seemed like a good idea (not to mention, it's St. Patrick's Day) to listen to the pulse and go back to a green kitchen, an entirely different definition of green than we live with now!OK, so now to pick apart comment on this kitchen. Here's my take:The microwave seems unnec-essarily high, look at all the white space between the oven and the microwave, they should be closer together, that looks awkward to meAs was typical, su...

Blogging The Architectural Digest Home Show, Kitchen Stuff
2007-03-11 17:02:00 Went to the Architectural Digest Home Show Saturday, at Pier 94, in New York. It's a good show. There are awesome, very cool, and one-of-a-kind things to be found here. I dressed for a client meeting I had in the morning. It was an outfit I got in Norway from a Swedish clothing design company. Gauzy, with a charming print, which went down to the knees and then with some leggings in a close, but different, pattern that went along with it. So far so good. Meeting went well, on to the city to meet the husband who worked that morning. My feet hurt in the shoes I was wearing. I didn't know till after I left for my meeting that we'd be going to the show, so I needed desperately to buy a new pair of shoes before I walked the show. We went to Foot Action on 34th street and 7th avenue. The music was louder than I've heard at any party I've ever gone to, how is that possible? The staff was dancing with whoever walked by. I guess I got in a party mood, my husband's feet were tapping...
kitchen nostalgia or shredder material? #2
2007-03-09 14:43:00 The one thing this kitchen has going for it is that it was secretly made to coordinate with this web page (I swear it did before I removed the yellow from the page), a project begun 40 years ago in a remote hamlet of western Oklahoma, being planned to later emerge from the kitchen graveyard for the WORLD to enjoy see gape at in March, 2007. What is wrong with this kitchen, let me count the ways: the cooktop is crammed next to the ovensthe dishwasher is way too far away from the sink (the sink is purposely recessed to have the DW next to it, which would function well, but not if it were not recessed, thus no need to be so far removed, a little, sure)the unbalanced left side as opposed to the right, not that asymmetry isn't a good thing, but this isn't even asymmetry I feel like I will enter a cave if I stand at the sink - maybe if I got lucky, I'd go through a time warp and arrive in the future with no memories of where I'd been, an apron having been replaced with live...

kitchen nostalgia or shredder material? Kitchen #1
2007-03-03 12:12:00 &-nbsp; &n-bsp; &nb-sp; &nbs-p; Each Saturday morning, I will be reintroducing a kitchen from years past, dredging up either a) memories which will thrust you into therapy anew assuming you are from that era, if not, you were thankfully born into a better kitchen era (except for the grays of the 80s) b) give you an urge to don an apron and find a rolling pin (this baby is $43) and probably other unpredictable reactions. Thus, I apologize in advance for the rude and (tasteless) reminders, but I couldn't resist! I've even made a category just for memorializing these kitchens. I mean, look, after all, orange is back in! Chant with me now (preferably with raised fist): NEVER AGAIN!!Can you guess the year? AND, how many jokes can we make about this kitchen?
