Neighborhood Concerns
2008-05-05 03:42:00
My properties are in what I like to call "marginal neighborhoods". They are not completely dead but they are on the edge. The problem is that there are a lot of young people who are on the street all day which gives the impression that there is some kind of danger in the immediate vicinity although the crime rate is below the norm. I want to rent these houses to desirable tenants but this perception is scaring away potential clients. Has anyone had this kind of challenge and how did you deal with it? Your input, good or bad, would be invaluable to me. Thank you!

China Food Exports To Japan Plunge On Quality Concerns. Isolated Case Or T
2008-05-03 20:32:00
While in Qingdao the other day, I went out for a sushi dinner with co-blogger Steve Dickinson and a long time Japanese fishing industry client in Qingdao on business. Steve had been to this same restaurant a few months earlier and raved about the food. The first few dishes were excellent, but the sushi platter contained tuna that looked to be a few months old. Steve informed our waitress of this fact and her reaction was to shrug. That got the three of us talking about China food quality, and at that point, Steve (who can speak and read Japanese) and the client told me that the topic of the day in Japanese magazines is "poisoned food" coming in from China. They both said that many of these articles accuse the Chinese of deliberately poisoning food going to Japan. I failed to ask if this "deliberate" poisoning was being done to save money and increase profits, or to get at the Japanese. They both said that Japan was making every effort to cease buying any food from China. T...

Bike Insurance - Bike Theft Increases Insurance Concerns
2008-05-01 09:10:00
Bike thefts are becoming increasingly common as thieves cash in on those who have dumped their cars, for more eco-friendly cycles.Figures released last year by Halifax Home Insurance showed that a bike was stolen somewhere in the UK every 71 seconds. A total of 440,000 bikes were stolen last year and there is an increasing worry that the figures for 2007 will be higher still when released next month. This is because local authority police figures in many areas are showing an increase in thefts across the board. Government figures for Hertfordshire for example have increased by 30 per cent since 2001, with reports of similar increases in Lancashire, Essex, Somerset and Cambridgeshire to list a few. Loughborough is one of the few places in the country to have reported a fall in bike thefts, with a drop of 20% from 2006.A major factor in this has been the pilot of an electronic tagging scheme for bikes that allows them to be traced easily if stolen. The electronic tag is inserted into t...

Egyptian Concerns About Hamas

Notwithstanding former President Carter’s embrace of Khaled Masha'l last week, there is little optimism in the region that Hamas is poised to change its stripes. U.S. Report issues "Warnings and Concerns" about BPA-
2008-04-18 06:00:00
Finally! The National Toxicology Program, in its draft report, labeled BPA as a chemical of concern (shocking, I know, to anyone who has been reading anything about parenting lately, especially this blog and many others-). The National Toxicology Program's findings are used by the FDA and the EPA to regulate certain chemicals. These findings are much different than an expert panel found just last year, but those studies have been widely disputed because of much of the study done by scientists hired by the chemical industry (no conflict of interest there!). In this article from today's Washington Post, I learned that 3 states are considering outright bans of BPA: California (ah, the sunshine state may do it again), Maine, and New Jersey. Where is Vermont? Now it looks like some politicians are paying attention, too, and calling on the FDA to regulate the use of BPA. It's heating up folks. And everyone thought we were overreacting. Take action to tell baby bottle manufacturers to st...

Climate Change - Health Concerns Related to Global Warming
2008-04-14 21:05:00
Global warming affects the environment as well as the health of the people living in that environment. Climatic changes impact human habitats as much as animal habitats. Human health is very sensitive to these changes.Global warming has caused rising temperatures in the environment. Devastating heat waves have recently occurred in areas of the world unaccustomed to extreme heat. Heat waves in Europe in 2003 lasted as long as two weeks, and temperatures soared as high as 104 degrees Fahrenheit. Although temperatures like this are common in parts of the American Southwest, European summers are usually much cooler. Over 35,000 people died there as a result of the heat waves that year. They were ill-equipped to deal with their changing habitat. There have also been heat waves in North America. One in 2006 claimed 226 lives. Another result of global warming is an increase in pollen in the air. Higher levels of carbon dioxide encourage the growth of more pollen-producing weeds. Those with ...

G7 Meeting voices concerns over recent currency volatility
2008-04-14 14:20:00
CURRENCY TRADING SUMMARYU.S. Dollar Trading (USD) strengthened on the back of indications the G7 summit was concerned over recent market volatility, ?Since our last meeting, there have been at times sharp fluctuations in major currencies and we are concerned about their possible implications for economic and financial stability.? The G7 statement also suggested that ?exchange rates should reflect economic fundamentals,? indicating the G7 is concerned about currency levels. The news coming from G7 is positive for the dollar, whilst it doesn?t indication direct action, it does signal the next move towards coordinated foreign exchange intervention. U.S data news released on Friday had little impact in comparison to the G7 commentary as the Michigan Sentiment report fell 6.3 points to a 26-year low of 63.2 in April. Within this, inflation expectations continue to grow raising concerns over the Fed?s current use of monetary policy to promote financial stability without concern over infla...

Dollar rebounds on G7 concerns
2008-04-14 14:17:00
The Euro closed above the 1.5800 mark on Friday but couldn't hold its gains over the weekend due to the G7's weekend reaction and statementsThe Euro appreciated last week above 1.58 against the Dollar, but dropped over the weekend, as a consequence of the G7?s summit reaction. The Euro closed above the 1.5800 mark on Friday but couldn't hold its gains over the weekend due to the G7's weekend reaction and statements and opened quite lower, testing support levels in the 1.56 area. The dollar's appreciation over the weekend indicates that there is risk of concerted intervention by the G7. The dollar rose to a one-week high against the euro, after the Group of Seven expressed concern over sharp fluctuations following a 14 percent slump in the greenback over the past year. The G-7 changed its statement on currencies for the first time in four years after the meeting in Washington on April 11, pledging to ``monitor exchange markets closely, and cooperate as appropriate.'' Student Loan Advice 'Concerns'
2008-04-10 18:40:00
U.S. News and World Report has posted an article expressing concerns about biased student loan advice on the internet. Along with blogs, they mention Christopher Penn's financial aid podcast from The Student Loan Network. But consumer advocates are concerned that students may not realize or consider that these educational messages are coming from people who want their business, not unbiased sources.First of all, I highly respect Penn's podcast. He provides a wealth of useful legitimate information. Of course, he's made a business out of it too.Second, pretty much everyone has a biased view to some degree. The U.S. News and World Report 'online' piece has advertisements on it directing you to 'biased' sources. So does my blog. Information is never totally free. The point is, even in the biased advice, there is golden information that may be of some use to you. The most unbiased source would be government web sites and that's only because they're tax payer funded.I ...

The latest death toll figures from Hurricane Katrina can be seen on this website here. The famous Russian neo-Nazi video is on this blog here. Actually, I am not a White Nationalist, and at White Supremacist sites, they find that notion to be a floor-roller. Anyway, they are in threads and some are spouting White Power slogans. I'm not wild about that, but it seems like verbal wall graffiti, and I'm used to that.Another WN questioned a Jewish commenter in an anti-Semitic manner that made him leave.
