2008-04-20 14:24:00 With the 40th and final installment in this series, we go to the most popular of all concertante instruments: the piano. I was tempted to go for Busoni's piano concerto where a male chorus plays a prominent role, but at over 70 minutes and covering a full CD, I decided that went too far. The other unusual type of piano concerto is of course the ones composed for the left hand only. Inspired by Paul Wittgenstein, who lost his right arm in the Great War, many composers tried their hand on left-hand only piano compositions. The most famous concerto is of course Ravel's but also composers of fame like Korngold and Martinu have left their marks in this specialized genre. I chose Prokofiev's fourth concerto for the series. This 1931 composition was commissioned by Wittgenstein (As Wittgenstein had refused to play the work, saying that he could not understand it, it became the only one of Prokofiev's complete piano concertos that never saw a performance during the composer's lifetime)...

Some might date from the weeks immediately preceding the dedication, but the existence of early versions of some pieces suggests that Bach may have compiled much of the set from a pool of existing works. I have opted for the 1959 violin concerto by American composer Lou Harrison (1917-2003), who chose to write a concerto with the regular symphony orchestra replaced by a percussion orchestra, very much inspired by Indonesian gamelan music.The composition is in three parts:1. Well, here it is, as usual in 128 kbps, as the CD can still be purchased (e.g. directly from the excellent record company, Chandos). 2007-10-13 15:22:00 With this highly unusual concertante "instrument" we close out this series for the time being - save for two unusual concertos for the usual piano and violin, respectively. To my knowledge, this is one of the few concertos for coloratura soprano and orchestra - Reinhold Gliere's opus 82. The Russian composer Gliere (1875-1956) is far more interesting than many give him credit for. For instance, his third symphony ranks for me as one of the finest of the twentieth century. This concerto for coloratura soprano (wordless) dates back to 1942-1943 and is in a clear late romantic idiom. The soloist in this recording is none other than Dame Joan Sutherland, with the London Symphony Orchestra under Richard Bonynge. It is taken from a Decca CD (4300062) that also contains Gliere's harp concerto, Glazunovs violin concerto and some short works.The movements:1. Andante [6:25]2. 2007-06-24 17:15:00 Dificilmente me vêm pagar 30 euros ou mais para ir passar duas horas num concerto a ouvir uma banda tentar reproduzir as músicas que gravou em condições óptimas nos seus álbuns. Mesmo quando gosto muitíssimo de uma banda já sei que não vou ficar todo entretido só porque os estou a ver ao vivo. Não sei explicar porquê mas nunca me entusiasmou demasiado a ideia de estar perante alguém que admiro só pela experiência de partilhar o tempo e o espaço como se isso em si fosse uma experiência. Parece-me que só depois de alguma lubrificação desnecessária é que isso se pode tornar dentro da nossa consciência algo estimulante.Detesto alinhar nos programas fáceis do costume e andar no meio de toda a gente. Se entro num sítio onde toda a gente parece ter-se lembrado de que seria boa ideia aparecer sinto-me perdido.
