Stillwell Memories: Ode to Coney Island
2008-04-29 16:49:00 Stillwell Memories: Ode to Coney Island How do you say good-bye to childhood’s beloved landmarks: gritty salty air, stale, but sweet popcorn moist and sweaty Cyclone guardrails that barely protect you from falling out but just not safe enough to not be condemned. Long treks through the history of Hip Hop starting in the boogie down with knob filled boomboxes blasting KRS-one’s South ...

Coney Island: The Lost Horizon
2008-01-04 15:00:00 It's the last of the last, as this weekend is the end of the photo exhibit highlighting the end of Coney Island as we know it. "440 Gallery hosts the solo exhibit 'Coney Island: The Lost Horizon' by street photographer Lara Wechsler. Wechsler's color images of present day scenes from Brooklyn's fading fantasy emporiums were shot during the past summer and document the diversity of its laid back populace. Wechsler focuses not so much on the gritty backdrop of peeling signs and chaotic carnival architecture but turns her lens instead on Coney Island's human soul. Here are families escaping the heat of the city for an outing by the sea with easy access to games, rides and food. There are flying leaps into blue water, blurred laughter on a ride and fishermen silhouetted against the evening sky. " Read More...Digg this | Email to a friend | Reddit

Dreams of Coney Island
2007-07-29 17:04:00 My brother is a health nut. Almost every day for lunch he has a tuna salad (tuna in springwater, chopped vegetables with no dressing!) and he rarely if ever indulges in naughty things such as sweets, cookies, cakes or chocolate. In fact, I often have to cajole him to give any of my baking a ...

Stay and Play at Coney Island in NYC
2007-07-07 20:46:00 Coney Island is a New York City neighborhood that features an amusement area that includes 35 or more separate rides and attractions. Although it's often thought of as an amusement park, it's not a centrally managed theme park like Disneyland or Six Flags. Coney Island rides and attractions are generally open on weekends from Easter until Memorial Day, all week long from Memorial Day until Labor Day, and then weekends from Labor Day until the end of September. The beach and boardwalk are open all year round (although lifeguards are only on duty from Memorial Day to Labor Day) and Nathan's Hot Dogs and the New York Aquarium are open almost every day of the year. The Coney Island Museum is also open on Saturdays and Sundays, from noon to 5 p.m. all year round and costs just 99 cents.During the week, rides and attractions may open at noon and run until the late evening. During the weekends, the same rides and attractions open around noon and may run until the early morning. Plan you...

MPA grad places third at Coney Island
2007-07-07 03:18:00 Patrick Bertoletti, a 2003 graduate from Morgan Park Academy finished in third place at the 92nd Annual Nathan's Hot Dog Eating contest on July 4 in Brooklyn, NY. Bertoletti ate 49 hot dogs and buns (HDBs) in twelve minutes. Bertoletti only trailed the champion Joey Chestnut (66 HDB) and six-time champion Takero Kobayashi (63 HDB). Both Chestnut and Kobayashi set records with their numbers. Bertoletti is one of the few eaters who have beaten Chestnut, as he defeated him in a jalepeno eating contest earlier this year at the St. Patrick's Day Chowdown in Savannah, GA. read more
Coney Island Mermaid Parade 2007
2007-06-26 06:30:00 The 'Coney Island Mermaid Parade' began in 1983. Started by Dick Zigun founder of the Coney Island USA. The Mermaid Parade celebrates the start of the Summer season, and plays homage to original Coney Island Mardi Gras parades in the early 20th century. It has taken place annually on the first Saturday of summer, Rain or Shine. Which means that we now have pictures of the Coney Island Mermaid Parade 2007. The parade may attract a couple of thousand participants and well over hundreds of thousands of spectators, some of which traveled to Coney Islands beaches to escape the heat that usually marks this day. The parade pays tribute to the grand days of Coney Island when it was the premiere amusement destination in the New York City Area. Next to the annual Village Halloween Parade, the mermaid parade is closest New York has to a Mardi Gras.

Coney Island Mermaid Parade and Ball
2007-06-23 16:00:00 Do they make bodypaint with sunscreen? Is body glitter easy to get off with salt water? what is the boiling point of asphalt? These are just some of the questions that will be passing through your brain if you choose to partake in one of Brooklyn's newest old traditions, The Mermaid Parade and Ball at Coney Island. I've been to a lot of after parties, but never to the actual parade, but I know it's a blast for everyone. If you want to be a part of the magical procession, you must register yourself or your group. For more information on this rite of summer, click here. Development Watch: 651 Coney Island Avenue
2007-06-01 11:06:00 While most people think of single-family wood houses when they think of Victorian Flatbush, there are clearly a lot of people interested in the area who can’t swing an entire house. They are presumably who the developers of 651 Coney Island Avenue had in mind when they set out some time ago to build this ...

Sconey Island: Orange and Currant Scones
2006-08-14 19:15:02 Sometimes life can feel a lot like Coney Island, an endless circus. You go from one act to the other jumping through hoops, breathing fire, taming lions, perhaps even handling large smelly mammals. And even though all these acts may not be arbitrary and meaningless, as you swing from one trapeze to the other, you think, perhaps a pause is required. Even though you may be in mid-air and in mid-flight, and there is nothing to catch you but a flimsy piece of netting, you know that letting go of that bar and getting out of that circus will essentially do you a world of good. In this post-modern, technologically advanced, self-reliant world it is easy to forget that we are actually humans, not machines. So amidst busy schedules, due papers, mounting exams, film shoots and stressful jobs, four girlfriends were able to take some time out of their own personal circus and get together for lunch. Life gets crazy, but being able to take time out with some of the most important people in...
