Movie Review: Intimate Confessions Of A Chinese Courtesan
2008-06-11 04:08:00
I once saw an interview with writer/director Eli Roth about what exactly makes an exploitation film.  He sees himself as a purveyor of the genre, especially with his Hostel movies.  Roth went on to say that an exploitation movie is a movie that does nothing other than entertain, and often gruesomely.  We have all heard ...

Confessions of a Stay-at-Home Dad: Part IV

I'm not saying that didn’t happen, it just didn't happen as often as I had envisioned. I think male pride can be a tough pill to swallow, but over the course of over seven years and three daughters I can safely say that I have that sucker almost all the way down. Our first year with Bella saw my wife and I complete our degrees, mine in English Writing and hers in Computer Science, I quit my part-time job in construction for a night job ...
Going Solo; Confessions & Inspirations - Craig Niedenthal
2008-06-05 10:02:00
This is a terrific entry into the Going Solo; Confessions & Inspirations category because it is the story of one 25-year veteran BigLaw lawyer who one day said, 'enough.'  Read:  Defying Gravity by new solo Craig Niedenthal. DEFYING GRAVITY Believe it or not, this path to going solo all began one night almost a year ago watching a Broadway play. Sitting in the dark theatre, mesmerized by a fairy tale story of all things, I heard these words in a song: .Something has changed in me/> Something is not the same. I'm through with playing by the rules Of someone else's game. Too late for second-guessing. Too late to go back to sleep. It's time to trust my instincts. Close my eyes: and leap!             That was the start of my revelation. You see, I had been practicing for almost 25 years on both ends of the spectrum and it just was not working for me anymore. To understand how I got here after all these years of pract...

Confessions of a Commitment Phobe.
2008-05-31 20:32:00
While waiting in an airport a couple of weeks ago to catch a flight home, I picked up a copy of "New York Magazine" because of that issue's leading article. "The Secret Lives of Married Men" (written by Philip Weiss, a 52-year-old journalist who "has always struggled with the desire for sexual variety") trots out all the same tired, old clichés about how "men have needs" which just can't be met in marriage. I can't be bothered dealing with the ins and outs of this article (Mary P Jones, over at a Room of Mama's Own, has already done so if you care to contribute to the debate) but I would like to use one quote from that article as a starting point for my post today because it troubled me considerably and made me question my own attitude towards relationships.Weiss writes about a gay friend of his who "has 'brooded' over his infidelity for a long time, sometimes feeling that he ought to confess" and who "told me it's a very 17-year-old American view of the world to think that ...

2008-05-24 08:19:00
For more from this series check the first post here (content/view/203/), and the second post here (content/view/224/).Part III Along the journey of the pregnancy, Jodi was again poked and prodded by doctors. She was administered tests and in an out of hospital gowns for a total of six sonograms, and seemed to become numb to all the invasiveness that she so dreaded in the past. I never wanted to know what the sex of our baby was, but it was Jodi’s intention to find out and since she was carrying and having the baby I felt it best to respect her wishes. I mean, if she hadn’t been already she was quickly turning into my hero. We found out we were having a girl and as it turned out the first of three. We chose the name Isabella, got our bags packed and waited for the day to arrive. Then it happened. Just when I thought I couldn’t be more impressed with my wife, she went into labor. It started with the “bloody show.” Now, for all of you guys out the...
Christina Aguilera Weight Loss Secrets & Other Confessions
2008-05-22 01:57:00
Christina Aguilera has revealed she lost three stone in four months since giving birth to her first baby, Max (born January, 12) . And it was easy to accomplish that? doing 90-minute workout sessions five days a week and keeping off white bread. :)On the other hand Christina continues to be fascinated by her post pregnancy boobs: "It's kind of hilarious! I've never fit into an E-cup before. I look at my husband [Jordan Bratman] and go, 'Guess what size this bra is?' And when I tell him, he's just amazed. We keep the tags that prove it, to look back for memory's sake!"You heard the lady!! She is an E-cup!! OMG I bet that?s not comfortable to sleep in? I bet little hubby is loving it too! Better love it while you can, once breastfeeding is over no more E-cups!!Christina also confesses to have a sweet tooth: "Oh, my God, candy! Confessions of a Twilight Guy
2008-05-15 00:00:00
[A Movie-fanatic’s take on Stephenie Meyer’s book, Twilight] I hope I don’t sound like Daniel, the interviewer in Anne Rice’s Interview with the Vampire, or appear to mimic the famous ‘centuries-old’ vampire who wants to be a rock star. I’m much simpler and more common than that. - - - - - - I love reading books. That’s particularly obvious since tMF has already featured 50 books-to- movie adaptations (http://themovie-fanatic.com/tm-f_top_50/books_to_films_hitlist-/books_to_movies_part1/). But here I have a confession…. While Umberto Eco’s The Name of the Rose, Mary Renault’s The Last of the Wine and Alexandre Dumas’ The Count of Monte Cristo are my all-time favorites, there is something so appealing and so heart-warming about Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight, that it is now fast becoming a favorite of mine. But my becoming a Twilight fanatic did not happen overnight. I used to be a skeptic too…

Going Solo; Confessions and Inspirations - Amy A. Breyer
2008-05-08 06:02:00
This solo lawyer is one of a new breed focusing on animal law.  I say new breed (pun intended) because while there have always been lawyers who have defended animals they were always seen on the 'fringe' as animal rights was marginalized.  Now, however, animal rights are finally being recognized and creating an increasing valuable niche for lawyers who choose to defend the rights of animals. Our guest blogger is one of them.  I also encourage you to visit Amy's blog as she has created an impressive list of animal rights lawyers throughout the country. Guest Blogger - Amy A. Breyer I opened my office on March 1, 2002 and (fortunately!) have been in business since.  I have a niche in a small but growing area of practice: animal law.  In case you're not familiar, animal law is very much like environmental law: an umbrella designation that includes a wide array of topics.  For example, just like environmental law covers air, water, land, pesticides an...

Confidential Confessions Manga, Volume 4 (English)
2008-05-06 14:05:00
Back in the bad old days of Yuri, in between the frantic melodrama of the 70's and this current decade, (and with the exception of Sailor Moon) it was fairly common in manga to find lesbian love paired with mental unbalance. Confidential Confessions, by Momochi Reiko is a series that allows us to wallow in the depravity of "true" stories and incidentally, see some crazy lesbians. You know the television show that's on WEtv (which as you know, I like to refer to as the "Violence Against Women Network,") High School Confidential? This manga was written 10 years ago - and it's the exact same stuff. Teenage pregnancy, abuse, drug use, etc. Freaky, huh? Guess good girls in bad trouble still appeals to some.In Volume 4, we "deal" with a number of unpleasant issues; institutionalized abuse of female students; prostitution; bullying; and, in "Forbdden Kiss," a lesbian love affair complete with insane jealousy, a knife and an ambiguously asexual ending. The author's notes dramatically expl...

Going Solo; Confessions & Inspirations - David Little
2008-05-01 06:02:00
This new solo practitioner, but not new lawyer, tells the story of practicing in insurance defense (insert any practice area you want) and upon deciding to go solo faces the dual challenge of not only creating a business but shifting practice areas completely and learning something new from scratch. Many solos I speak to ask, "how can I do this?"  Well, David Little is beginning his fifth month of solo practice and is telling his story here. Guest Blogger - David Little Going solo has been just about the most gratifying and terrifying thing I have ever done. At times, I have wondered whether the trade off of money and security in exchange for freedom has been worth it. Although it has only been about four months, I have to say that it has. I have been practicing since November 2000, and have spent my entire career as an insurance defense attorney. It was not what I envisioned I would be doing when I applied to law school. Several years ago, during a fit of job dis...

True Confessions of a Trash-Tale Junkie
2008-04-18 01:23:00
I am a true crime addict, unrepentantly so, and it’s all Truman Capote’s fault for writing that "nonfiction novel" In Cold Blood back in 1965, about a Kansas farm family’s murder by two ex-cons. Before long, Anatomy of a Murder, a criminal defense lawyer’s true story of a bartender’s 1951 murder in Big Bay, Michigan, came into my hands, and I was on my way to ruin, descent and Helter Skelter. "Filthy trash," snorted my high school English teacher. My explanation that true crime was the perfect education for a would-be lawyer fell upon deaf ears. Little did she realize, I’m sure, that In Cold Blood would be hailed as a literary triumph in years to come or that Robert Traver was the pen name of a future Michigan State Supreme Court Justice. Never once in two decades of trial practice have I ever put Milton’s lessons to work, but...

Confessions of a Flickr Snoopr (Admit It, You?re One Too) [Flickr]
2008-04-13 17:00:00
My name is Addy and I'm a Flickrholic. I'm a window-licking voyeuse who's been pressing her nose up against the cold glass of the lives of utter strangers, snooping through their photostreams. And if you think I'm weird, take a peep through their curtains. Marvel at Polymorfo Perverso's rather delicious fetish portraits (one caption reads "your neck is so much fun") or Gizmodo's favorite tough man as meat-market mascot. If you're a Flickr snoopr like me, you know the giddy, naughty pleasure of it all. If you're not one, well, here's how to become one in a hurry. The beauty of Flickr is it's serendipity. I found Mr Perverso's oh-so-perverse materials by innocently typing "I love Jesus" into the search box. Usually I'm on the hunt for stuff at work such as "Treo unboxing," "broken iPhone" or "computer dungeon," which gets you some guy's basement server farm, screenshots of PC-based RPGs, and, for some reason, a shot of a dude's first computer, an Atari 800. But "dungeo...

Confessions of a Grand Theft Auto Virgin
2008-04-02 05:45:00
By Andrew WallensteinApril 2, AdWeekI have a shocking confession to make. I have never once played a Grand Theft Auto game. With the impending release of Grand Theft Auto IV, it's time for me to play the series that turned the world on its head. The series is notorious for becoming the media's favorite whipping boy of violent videogames. But it is also responsible, perhaps more importantly, for the popularization of non-linear gameplay in action games and "sandbox" worlds that let a player explore with no particular goal in mind. Now, it's not entirely true that I've never played any GTA title. When I was studying in Kanazawa, Japan, one of the great pastimes in the international dorms was Grand Theft Auto 2. But the first two GTA games were quite different from the ones that gained such notoriety. Though they too featured the adventures of a criminal tearing up a city, they were arcade-style, 2-D titles. We had a great time with that game's networked multiplayer modes, and this l...
