Church Tells Congregation to have Sex Everyday
2008-02-20 07:07:00 People are not having enough sex. An epidemic of breakups prove the needs that lead to a great sex life are being overlooked. Dirty dishes, frumpy clothes, and a lack of authentic connections are killing the romance. A great sex life is a challenge and takes focus, determination, and planning. Some say it?s an unrealistic goal, but we [at Relevant Church] disagree. We believe you can have a great sex life, in fact we believe God wants you to have a great sex life.

Johnny Griffin - Congregation [1957]
2008-01-25 17:59:00 "I like to play fast. I get excited, and I have to sort of control myself, restrain myself. But when the rhythm section gets cooking, I want to explode."Johnny Griffin A few years ago a new recording came out that showcased five young tenor saxophonists. The album's title, inspired, no doubt, by a desire to cash in on the "young lions" craze so much in vogue, anointed its youthful stars as "young tough tenors."Well, there used to be a time when it meant something to be called a "tough tenor." It wasn't just a title your record label bestowed upon you. You had to serve your time on the frontlines of jazz, locking horns nightly with cats called Illinois, Sonny, Jug, Dexter, Wardell, Lockjaw. And when you finally earned the rank, the other tough tenors-not record producers or agents or publicists or critics-let you know.Johnny Griffin won his "tough tenor" stripes in crack regiments like the Lionel Hampton big band, Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, and the Thelonious Monk quartet. The Missionary Congregation of St Gemma Galgani.
2007-11-15 20:12:00 The Italian journal Adista reports on an unfortunate and disturbing dispute between Bishop Marcello Semeraro, Bishop of Albano and the Missionary Congregation of St Gemma Galgani.According to Adista, the nuns' job was teaching Christian doctrine to the children of the Parish. They have been sacked by the Bishop of Albano, from Laziale, near Rome, because they refused to accept a clause in their contract which required that they be home helps of the Parish Priest and the Vice-Parish Priest of the Parish of Saints Peter and Paul in the town of AprÃlia .The Bishop’s demand was considered 'unacceptable' by the Superior of the Mother House in Lucca, Tuscany, about 10 miles north-east of Pisa.As a result the Bishop has dismissed the three sisters in spite of a petition signed by 1500 parishioners supporting them.Bishop Semeraro did not even take into account the fact that the priests in question have stated that they 'had not asked for the services of the sisters in view of the fac...
Congregational Meeting Update
2007-10-22 17:54:00 We have had two congregational meetings with the current congregational President, and I must say that they are the most smoothly-run congregational meetings that I have ever had the pleasure to be a part of.Yesterday, the family of Saint John gathered after worship for our semi-annual congregational meeting. As a part of that meeting, we approved the 2008 budget, approved the 2008 Strategic Plan for Ministry, and elected five new council members. Our Budget Review Committee and congregational Council did an excellent job putting together the 2008 Budget. We were able to "trim some of the fat" so to speak, cutting budget lines that were never- or seldom-used. The total budget was a $8,570 increase over the 2007 budget, with the biggest single line-item increase being the Pastor's insurance, reflecting the addition of a new member to our family. Also included in the budget was a salary for a part-time Director of Music and Worship, as recommended in the Strategic Plan. The 2008 St...
2) How not to Offend an Entire Congregation
2007-09-09 21:51:00 The second to the worst blunder I've made as a youth pastor happened just a couple weeks into my first paid youth ministry position. I was serving a Southern Baptist church in a very rural community in central Kentucky between Harrodsburg and Versailles called Salvisa. If you've been to this part of...
The Largest Congregation Led By a Woman?
2007-09-09 14:15:00 The Religious Research Association, a fine organization of denominational datawonks (of which I am a member), had an interesting exchange recently trying to find the largest mainline congregation headed by a woman pastor. The results (so far):Rev. Jo Gayle Hudson, Cathedral of Hope, in Dallas, has an attendance of 1500+ and membership of 4500+. This is now a United Church of Christ congregation, but began as a Metropolitan Community Church. Indeed, it was probably the leading MCC congregation. This also explains how there is a UCC – that is, Congregationalist – congregation with the very un-Congregationalist name of "Cathedral." The MCC, a homosexual-oriented Pentecostal denomination, is not mainline, but the UCC is.The next largest woman-led UCC congregation (the largest with a direct Congregationalist history) is Community Church UCC, Vero Beach, FL, led by Rev. Casey Garrett Baggott. It has a worship attendance of 1612 and membership of 2080.In the Evangelical Lutheran Ch...

Thomas Weeks told congregation of marital woes between him and Juanity Bynu
2007-08-24 21:26:00 Bishop Thomas W. Weeks, who turned himself into police today for allegedly beating and choking his wife, had a heart-to-heart talk with his flock earlier this month. He alluded that there was trouble in paradise and that Bynum would have to take a lesser role in their church.
Pastor asks Congregation to Pray so his Critics will Die
2007-08-17 16:42:00 In another absurd behavior by our American religious leaders gone punch-drunk with power, a California pastor in Buena Park, Wiley S. Drake, who is also the former national leader of the Southern Baptist Convention, called on his followers to pray for the deaths of two leaders of Americans United for Separation of Church and State. The request was in response to the liberal group’s urging the IRS on Tuesday to investigate Drake’s church’s nonprofit status because Drake endorsed former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee for president on church letterhead and during a church-affiliated Internet radio show. Pastor Drake said Wednesday he was “simply doing what God told me to do” by targeting Americans United officials Joe Conn and Jeremy Leaming, whom he calls the “enemies of God.” Conn said he was “startled” at Drake’s reaction to the complaint against Drake’s First Southern Baptist Church of ...

Vatican congregation reaffirms truth, oneness of Catholic Church
2007-07-16 01:34:00 I won't comment too much on the Church's announcement that it alone is without error in Faith and morals because it seems so obvious that any Church worth its salts of the Earth would say it's the only correct one. What else would she say, "We might be right, but we can't be sure," or "We're right on some things, but we might be wrong about this?" Remember that although the Church has the "fullness" or "the whole enchilada," of Truth, other groups or even secular philosophies may have a few parts correct. It's all there folks.

The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith
2007-06-21 00:14:00 Over one hundred German theologians have expressed support for Peter Hünermann?s recent call for an ?intelligent restructuring? of the Vatican?s Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. Hünermann observes that the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith ?has preserved the structure of a censor?s office, which it had at the beginning of the modern era.? And he notes: ?Today, it?s necessary to elaborate the ratio fidei in a very complex culture, with its grave social, scientific and human problems. This presents a degree of complexity that a censor?s office according to old models is absolutely not capable of handling, even on an organizational and technical level.? He is, of course, exactly right. In 1968, Ratzinger himself signed the Nijmegen Declaration ? a similar call for reform, which stated that the teaching office of the pope ?cannot and must not supersede, hamper and impede the teaching task of theologians as scholars.?
Encounters with tradition (3): from Congregationalist to Reformed Baptist
2007-06-06 00:33:00 A guest-post by Guy DaviesCharles Haddon Spurgeon began his Christian life as a Congregationalist who believed in infant baptism. But soon after his conversion, he embraced Baptist views. His Congregationalist parents were a little disappointed in Charles? decision to seek baptism. But they gave him permission to follow his conscience. His mother wrote: ?Ah, Charles, I often prayed to the Lord to make you a Christian, but I never asked that you might become a Baptist.? The dutiful son replied with a note of typical Spurgeonic wit: ?Ah, Mother, the Lord has answered your prayer with his usual bounty, and has given you exceedingly abundantly above all you asked or thought.?I began my Christian life as a rather charismatic Congregationalist. I quickly became disillusioned with charismatic experiences as it became obvious to me that my ?speaking in tongues? was just me blurting out incomprehensible nonsense. I needed something that would give my new Christian life depth and stability an...
Congregation Locked Out Of Their Church
2007-06-04 03:57:00 COLUMBUS, Geogia — Members of Mount Moriah Baptist Church are raising their voices to God under an old oak tree in the front yard–because they’re locked out of their own church. “We should not be denied the opportunity to worship in God’s house. I don’t know how it came to this, it’s very disappointing,” said Church ...
The Afghan Whigs - Congregation
2006-12-20 22:53:02 The third Afghan Whigs album, 1992’s ‘Congregation’, turns on one clear thematic axis: relationships going bad. ‘Congregation’̵-7;s emotional terrain covers the straits between man and heroin (”I’m Her Slave”) and those between men and women. Varying the “grunge” formula, the Whigs stretch their wings musically, including several clean-sounding slow songs. If not for the subject [...] |
