Come on Britain, it's only the Olympics
2008-09-01 03:08:00
'If it were done when 'tis done, then 'twere well, It were done quickly' - Macbeth (Scotsman), William Shakespeare (Englishman)Team GB is getting ridiculous. The prospect of Britain fielding a football team at the 2012 Olympics should have been something to celebrate after years of absence. Instead it is fast becoming an almighty calamity. For years, I watched in envy as other nations played soccer in the Olympics, but it was never a huge loss for us to be left out. Now we have finally been invited to (our own) party, we are umming and erring so much we might not even end up going. There are two immovable obstacles at the heart of the current furor, which shows no signs of abating. One is that the UK is four nations in one and those four nations are the oldest football associations in the world, with privileged seats on FIFA?s International Board but in danger of disappearing if enough FIFA nations choose to dissolve them into a UK team. And second is that the UK has no choice but ...
Conor Oberst - Conor Oberst
2008-08-06 02:45:00
Bright Eyes? songwriter Conor Oberst recorded this self-titled album while rambling through Mexico. Far from home, the Omaha native still delivers introspective, witty lyrics with a country twang and a biting edge. He might have dropped his stage name and his longtime producer Mike Mogis, but Oberst is still singing deceivingly simple songs with haunting ...

Euro 2008 was a tournament to savour
2008-07-04 22:20:00
Back in England a week on from the end of Euro 2008, the tournament still looks as impressive as it did in the Alps. I am not relishing another stolid European club season, dominated by the tawdry money of the big teams, so for the last time, I am looking back on what was a refreshing festival of football, the sort of which comes around only every few years: How was the play?Very good, on the whole, refreshingly adventurous and attacking. Only France v Romania seemed to have come from planet boredom. The French appeared to have a cloud over them all tournament, while Romania strangely failed to turn the screw when they needed to in their final group game, so deserved to leave early, too.Croatia v Turkey was not easy to sit through for two hours, but that was rather down to one team buttoning down the hatches and trying to frustrate another which was playing with winning ambition. The Dutch were irresistible for two games, while Spain danced their way to the trophy delightfully throug...

Bright Eyes' Conor Oberst to Release Solo Album
2008-04-24 00:00:00
Indie rock giants Bright Eyes, who consist of not much more than front man Conor Oberst and whatever other musicians he chooses to bring in to support him, have gained immense popularity over the past decade despite being on the small independent Saddle Creek Records. Thus, it comes as a surprise to
Conor cools a bit
2008-04-22 03:17:00
After posting ridiculous numbers last week and being named the NL player of the week, Conor Jackson ONLY had a double in four at-bats Monday night. His line last week, in case you missed it, read: 12 for 25 to post a .480 AVG, 3 HR, 10 RBI, 10 R, 2 BB, 1 K, 3 triples and even chipped in a steal. Not bad for a weeks work.
Conor Jackson Heating Up
2008-04-19 00:26:00
Conor Jackson is now 4-4 tonight with a homer, two triples and 4 RBI. He's a top breakout candidate this year and should be considered a fine CI in all leagues. He's got potential to hit 25-30 and drive in 100 batting in the heart of an Arizona lineup that is primed to score a ton of runs.
Chef Conor
2008-04-18 09:53:00
I occasionally let Conor help cook dinner. I don't do it often as I have Isla to contend with crawling riot around the house and I need to be quick. I prefer to take my time with him if I can. There's the general two year old lax attitude to hot burny things which complicates matters and he's actually quite bossy. I made a very easy Spaghetti Bolognese tonight and he did most of the stirring and adding of ingredients. He was a little Gordon-Ramsey-esque with the herbs. I'm a herb nut and add whatever takes my fancy. I'm sure most compete with each other and I go overboard. I used dried as I could not be bothered to go out and fetch the rosemary, thyme and parsley from our poor excuse for a garden, in the dark. Well, Conor demanded "more bits" and became a little foul over being told we had finished with the herbs. I gave in and let him go crazy with the marjoram and oregano. I figured it couldn't hurt. The herb jars were almost finished. After all his efforts, he...
Conor Anatomy
2008-04-06 01:59:00
Learning the names for his different parts is fun, washing those parts himself, not so much. We are working on that. He's mastered most of the important areas and delights in words like forehead ("forrid"), clavicles (well, collar bones seemed harder), fingers/phalanges, toes/phalanges and his "uniqua" which stands for urethra. He understands that's there's lots of hard things under his skin called bones and that they form a skeleton. Blame MGM's late night screening of the 1963 Jason and The Argonauts. Conor had woken upset and needed a cuddle in the lounge. He got campy fighting skeletons as an extra. We just had to explain that skeletons don't go walking around like that attacking people. In fact, they do not walk around at all. The same sort of explanation applied when he saw The Killers' 'Bones' song, which he's quite partial to.He's also very vocal about the differences between boys and girls, uses the correct anatomical terms and will even remind mummy and ...
Mexico victims of the English malaise
2008-04-02 05:57:00
Five days after Mexico beat Ghana 2-1 in London, Hugo Sanchez was fired as Mexico's coach. How so? He had only been in charge a year and a half, so what went so badly wrong?Under his tenure, Mexico lost the Gold Cup final 2-1 to the USA in Chicago, but that should have been no reason for dismissal since the CONCACAF bragging rights definitively crossed the Rio Grande when the States downed El Tri 2-0 back in the 2002 World Cup.Mexico also thumped Paraguay 6-0 and beat Brazil, yes Brazil, 2-0 in last summer's Copa America in Venezuela, before finishing third overall; another reason not to sack him one would have thought.Expectations had been raised by the fact Mexico won the U17 World Cup in 2005 and reached the last eight of the U20 World Cup in 2007, and thus the recent failure of the U23s to qualify for the Beijing Olympics was the biggest casus belli for the Federation.Olympic soccer is roughtly on a par with five-a-side football for most European nations, but apparently not so...
Human Weapon MMA Episode: Jason Chambers vs Conor Huen
2008-03-31 20:41:00
A fight scene from one of the more entertaining episodes from "Human Weapon"- Jason Chambers vs. Conor Huen of the IFL. Why was this great? You get to see Jason pull a Twister. I bet Eddie Bravo had an orgasm watching this particular episode.http://www.youtube.com/-v/JC66xuJZ0gsYeah, this started from "watchable" and devolved into "craptastic." doesn't mean a few episodes weren't entertaining. The biggest difference between Human Weapon and Fight Quest is that the guys on Fight Quest will at least subtly let you know that they think a particular aspect of a martial art is silly, but on Human Weapon, they try to take everything face-value and seriously. Also, when they did the ninjitsu and kung fu episodes, those were really just plain embarrassing to watch. Plus, there's no Bill "American Muscle" Duff on FQ.

Conor Loves The Snow
2008-03-04 00:08:00
This is one of the hardest winters we have experienced in this part of the world for a long time. But Conor is not complaining about the snow. Heck no, the snow is no problem and autism is not an issue. Conor enjoys the snow, he loves the snow, just like so many other Canadian kids.autism
Where's Conor? Where Did Conor Go?
2008-02-27 19:39:00
Conor has autism disorder. He also has his own lively personality quite separate and apart from his autism. He is much more as a person than his autism. He is a lot of fun. While these pictures were being taken I was asking "Where's Conor?" "Where did Conor go?" (When my mouth wasn't covered).Conor enjoyed every second of our fun. And so did Dad.autism
Unlikely hero Blatter has the enemy in his sights
2008-02-23 14:42:00
It has been a rare treat for the used and abused football fan to see the Premier League so humiliated as they have been this past week. The seemingly invincible money-machine that was born in 1993 has for the first time hit a real brick wall in its quest to rob football of all its traditions in the pursuit of profit.I have relished watching those whom the PL thought were their friends - the FA, Manchester United etc, turn tail and slam their colonial project. For challenging their authority, the upstart division's pretensions of grandeur have met a cannonade of criticism from the real powers in the game, who have torpedoed the ludicrous 'Game 39' proposal.Hopefully now it will sink to the bottom and die next Thursday when PL Chief Executive Richard Scudamore and FA Chairman Lord Triesman come up against FIFA boss Sepp Blatter in Zurich.Should the PL persist with their daft and ill-conceived plan, FIFA will again lock swords with the PL at their Executive Meeting on the 14th of Marc...

Thoughts On Conor Jackson
2008-02-19 23:09:00
My Conor Jackson projection: .291-16-71-69-2 in 467 ABs. The line would be worth $2.83, below Kevin Youkilis but above Ryan Garko. There's more here, however. I am still as big of a Jackson fan as I ever was. The high...
Conor Harrington Show
2008-01-27 23:58:00
Went to the Lazarides Gallery to see Conor Harrington last Thursday do his first solo show of 2008. This guy is getting beter and better each year as he takes his blend of realism & classical paint-style and mixes it all up with very modern lines and graffiti-esque backgrounds. I reckon that Conor is one of the best young artists living in the UK at the moment and look out for another UKAdapta feature on him in the next couple months.

No rush for England's poisoned chalice
2007-11-25 16:48:00
"There are not many candidates because it looks a bit like a crocodile that opens the mouth and says: 'Jump into that.' Once he's in there, he's eaten. And once you have eaten four, five says: 'No, maybe I don't jump in there.'"So went the words of Arsene Wenger, the best coach working in England at present. In the old days, before the savaging of Bobby Robson and Graham Taylor by the tabloids and the realization that the real money and chances of success were to be found in the Premier League and not the international game, the nation?s best coach would have leapt at the chance of managing England. Not any more. In the aftermath of Steve McClaren?s quick exit from Soho Square, the candidates for the top job have been scurrying into the shadows. Like schoolkids desperate for the teacher not to pick them to answer a tricky question, the candidates are doing their best to look at their shoes instead.Aston Villa coach Martin O?Neill could probably have signed a contract the day af...
England all played out again
2007-11-24 02:05:00
The Emperor has no clothes and it?s official. For the first time within the walls of the awesome citadel that is the new Wembley Stadium, the English national team has come a cropper in a big way, and this time there can be no hiding from the naked truth. Now let these sombre words ring out across our green and pleasant land: England are a mediocre football nation and it?s high time we accepted it.One final appearance in 57 continuous years of international football competitions tells its own story and cannot by any logic justify the perennial Mount Everest of expectations heaped upon the Three Lions. As the 3-2 victory over England by a competent yet not exceptional Croatian eleven on Wednesday proved once more, there is simply no case for believing we deserve a place at the high table of the world?s football nations, so please don?t try to make it.After such a miserable and humiliating surrender, can anyone seriously believe we can win the 2010 World Cup? Will the patriotic punters b...

Estonia win edges England closer to EURO 2008
2007-10-15 11:50:00
After months of real uncertainty and voices of doom, England?s qualification for Euro 2008 looks ever more likely now after the three lions cruised past Estonia 3-0 at Wembley on Saturday.Steve McClaren can sleep that bit easier than when England succumbed lamely 2-0 in Croatia a year ago, only days after tying the mighty Macedonia 0-0 at home.First-half strikes from Shaun-Wright Phillips, Wayne Rooney and an own goal by Estonia?s Taavi Rahn sent England into a 3-0 lead with 33 minutes on the clock and the contest was as good as over. The pre-match atmosphere was far from tense. Confidence in English fans was high following the Wembley win over Russia in September and the media were far more interested in the England rugby team's World Cup semifinal against France in Paris that night than the football team's clash with Estonia.McClaren's men profited from being out of the spotlight for once and looked relaxed as they eased into a comfortable lead in the first half before turning o...

Conor Tracks
2007-09-28 11:50:00
I have mentioned before that my son Conor, now 11 1/2, with Autism Disorder and profound developmental delays, is a great joy in my life. His autism presents serious challenges and precludes him from having an independent life. Despite the many challenges though, Conor adds much to my life. When I see him at the end of the work day, face pressed against the window waiting for Dad, or when he walks into a room, I get a "Happy Buzz". I feel better, my spirits are lifted. Sometimes I get a Conor Happy Buzz even when I don't see him.Last night, after Conor was asleep in his room, and during a commercial break from the season premiere of "My Name Is Earl" I went to the kitchen for a glass of water and spotted something on the kitchen floor. The ABC 's are Conor Tracks, signs that he had been there. And once again I got a Conor Happy Buzz.
Conor Eager to Get to Middle School
2007-09-26 12:39:00
We were anxious about how Conor would handle the transition to middle school this year. We put a plan in place and carried it out with the help of the school team. But Conor is the main player on the team and he has done very well. These pictures taken yesterday show Conor ready to go to school, heading out the door 20 minutes early. He wants to get to middle school!C'mon Dad get away from the computer.Dad put the coffee down, let's go.Dad, you are so old and slow!Ah! Finally, it's about time!
Autism Reality - Conor Gets A Haircut
2007-09-13 11:05:00
Yesterday was a haircut day for Conor as these before and after pictures show.Ordinary events in everyday life can become big challenges with an autistic child. Haircuts with the noise, the temporary restraint of the barber's chair, the itchy discomfort, the intrusion by another person into the child's personal space, can all add up to serious resistance by Conor.A few years ago I would have to hold him, restrain him, in the barber's chair. He would get so upset that he would literally bite into my shoulder. Things are better now but it is still a challenge getting Conor's hair cut.Haircuts are planned for times when few other clients will be around, in a smaller establishment, with the same lady who has been cutting Conor's hair for several years. With all that it is still not easy.It is the skills, understanding and patience of the lady who cuts Conor's hair that makes it happen fairly smoothly. Sometimes we all take people, and what they contribute to our lives, for g...
Conor Is Ready For School!
2007-09-03 16:30:00
I commented Saturday about Conor's transition to Middle School which will start tomorrow and the preparations that we have done to help him get ready. He appears to be pretty excited about getting back to school. These pictures are of Conor's handiwork yesterday practicing his letters and numbers. The bananas seemed to need the number 4 on them?Conor practiced his letter writing by tracing over the letters on his alphabet puzzle board. One sample of Conor's printing yesterday, including a not so subtle message about what he wanted for supper. (Yup, he got what he wanted, and the KFC chicken was tasty!)

D'Backs Conor Jackson Deal Dismissed in Chicago
2007-07-19 03:32:00
With Jeff DaVanon returning from the disabled list to a crowded Diamondbacks clubhouse, manager Bob Melvin tried young first baseman Conor Jackson in the outfield as teammates clamored for playing time.A report that Jackson was run out there to be showcased for a trade to the White Sox drew a laugh from the front office in Chicago, according to the Arizona Republic. Jokingly the White Sox communication suggested: "Let us know next time you're showcasing someone for us."
What's Wrong With Conor Jackson?
2007-05-31 16:00:00
25 year-old Arizona first baseman Conor Jackson was supposed to have a power breakout this year, maybe mash 20-25 home runs as a sophomore.  Instead, his line sits at just .274/.389/.407.  What gives? Heading into the season I saw a solid .301-20-86-81-2 fantasy performance for Jackson.  That would've been double digit value with room for even more.  The first thing that went wrong was my expectation of Jackson hitting fifth regularly for Arizona, given their lack of monster bats in the middle.  Instead, he has batted second about half the time and sixth a little less than 30% of the time.  So, no RBIs for you. I expected Jackson to be able to hit .300 based on an 85% contact rate and 10% walk rate in his first full season.  Those are the skills of a true .300 hitter.  This year, his contact rate is up around 89% and his walk rate is over 14%.  This man is going to hit .300 regularly.  He's hit .357 over the last three weeks, so lo...
Autism & ABA, For Conor It All Adds Up
2007-05-21 19:45:00
I have commented previously about how ABA, Applied Behavior Analysis, has been such a positive and effective means of communicating with Conor, teaching him to communicate, teaching him to read, and controlling and reducing problem behavior, notwithstanding the challenges that remain. By problem behavior I mean self aggression and self injurious behavior as well as property damage and aggression to others. Another area of skill development for Conor has been math. Conor loves his numbers and he is learning and loves to demonstrate his math skills as shown in these pictures. The pictures on this comment show skills, including patience and task accomplishment, in addition to adding things up correctly, that would have been unimaginable prior to ABA. If parents with newly diagnosed children do not wish to believe the hundreds of studies documenting the effectiveness of ABA as an intervention for autistic children then take a look at these pictures. This is not a "robotic" child being ...

Conor Oberst is Bright Eyes
2007-03-24 21:24:00
Conor Oberst is Bright Eyes and Bright Eyes is Conor Oberst. What should we call or how to categorise this music? Indie-experimental-country? Tonight Conor Oberst plays in Debaser Medis in Stockholm, Sweden. One of my sons are queeing outside the place with some friends, all in vain. The tickets are sold out since long ago. Facts from Wikipedia about Conor Oberst: Conor Mullen Oberst (born February 15, 1980) is an American singer-songwriter best known for his work in Bright Eyes. He has also played in several indie rock bands, including Desaparecidos, Commander Venus and Park Ave., and is co-founder and executive partner in the independent record labels Team Love and Saddle Creek Records. I said to my son about standing outside in the chilly night in Stockholm: stay home instead, listen to Conor Oberst at home instead. As here for example, from YouTube: Conor Oberst solo [Bright Eyes] Arienette. Andra bloggar om: Conor Oberst, Bright Eyes, indie, video, musik, music, alternative,...
