Conrad Black : Judge Refuses to Extend Bail
2008-02-12 23:11:00
Conrad Black who was sentenced to 6 1/2 years for fraud and obstruction, has been trying to obtain a bail extension. Many common criminals go directly to the clink. Black, being an "uncommon" criminal, is able to employ teams of lawyers capable of turning heel-dragging into a virtual art form.Judge Amy St Eve refused the request by Black and two co-defendants to remain on the loose until June 15. They are required to report to prison on the previously arranged date of March 3.True-to-form, Black is going to appeal.I've no idea what he and his team hope to achieve by appealing, because the evidence speaks for itself. The sentence was actually pretty lenient when you consider the obstruction end of it.Black, who isn't famous for manual labor, hauled 13 boxes out of 10 Toronto Street. He pulled off the 'heist' in direct contravention of orders that forbade removal of any boxes 'soever, and he did it while under investigation by the SEC. Video footage of Black and associates scannin...
Conrad Black : Bail Extension Denied

Conrad Black who was sentenced to 6 1/2 years for fraud and obstruction, has been attempting to obstruct efforts to get him into lock-up by March 3.Many common criminals go directly to the clink. Black, being uncommon, is able to employ a team of lawyers capable of turning heel-dragging into a virtual art.Didn't help this time around. Conrad Black : Takes a Shot at Kissinger and Buckley in the New York Sun
2008-01-05 18:32:00
If you're in the mood for a long winded column I recommend Conrad Black's recent offering that appeared in the New York Sun.The prose style is predictably florid and at times a bit affected. Shots are fired at Kissinger and Buckley for their 'betrayal'. Black also lavishes praise on his esteemed targets - just so readers won't fail to notice how he remains regally above such scoundrel lapses.Buckley and Kissinger's suspicions that CB is guilty of something demonstrates excellent intuition. Under the circumstances it was actually very large of Buckley to go to bat for Nibs during the trial.Black managed to pass muster in the role of tycoon - but he auditions less well for for the role of Jesus. The more he complains and plays the martyr, the more pathetic he looks - except of course to the sycophants and yes-men who would sing "For He's a Jolly Good Fellow" even if Nibs had gone on a crack fueled, sea-to-sea mass murder spree.I have to admit that I still nurse a perverse affec...
Conrad Black : The Fat Lady Sings
2007-12-13 16:18:00
After the Conrad Black trial ended there was speculation in the press that he might be put away for as long as 20 years. He ended up receiving a sentence of 61/2. I think this is a fair sentence for a man of his age. With good behavior he could be looking at an earlier release. What is tragic or tragicomic (depending on your point-of-view) about this whole saga isn't just the issue of corporate misconduct, but the fact that a man who had the potential to make a significant contribution to Canada is going to end up mopping the floors in a Florida pen.Truth is though, a lot of Canadians have grown weary of hearing about the Blacks and their interminable dramas. Hardly surprising. He and Barbara Amiel have given the impression for years that they are consumed with nothing so much as their petty vendettas and their need-to-be-seen, preferably in company that served as some kind of endorsement. There is something childlike about Black, notwithstanding his weighty intellect and ponderou...

Conrad Black Versus Peter C. Newman : Twelve Rounds
2007-11-28 12:53:00
The war of words between soon-to-be jailbird Conrad M. Black and legendary literary sailor, Peter C. Newman, heated up recently. In a flurry of jibes and counter-jibes in Canadian papers, the two combatants went at it. Black mocked Newman's "ridiculous hat" and trashed his writing. Newman in turn defended his hat claiming that it is "no more ridiculous than the parliamentary robe of state Lord Black wears as a member of the British House of Lords."Even though the ex-tycoon's aristocratic pretensions are indeed worthy of satirical comment, there is something about Newman's cap that has always bothered me. It seems intended to evoke Hemingwayesque swagger. Unfortunately, it only succeeds in making him look like a Peter, Paul and Mary fan who the passage of time has somehow overlooked. It's a great mystery how Newman ever managed to acquire the title of 'Canadian literary icon'. Obviously an editor once upon a time sincerely believed this to be the case and the word began to sprea...

Conrad Black : Media Baron Blues
2007-09-26 08:54:00
The recent trial of Conrad Black confirmed the suspicions of people who have long viewed him as a corporate crook. It also provided satisfaction to people who resented him, envied him and those who for political reasons would like nothing more than to see him roast in hell. He still has a few supporters but they're increasingly hard to find.Back in 1998, Black’s National Post stormed onto the scene as an alternative to the standard newspaper fare in Canada. His personal style was far from typically Canadian. He didn’t hide his ambitions or his wealth or pretend to anything approximating humility. He assumed airs and graces that many Canadians found offensive. He was a union basher. Chased after titles. Threw lavish parties. Dismissed his critics with verbose attacks that were as cutting as they were entertaining.Black’s love of pomp and circumstance had a bit of a pantomime aspect to it. On one occasion he made an appearance as Cardinal Richelieu with Barbara Amiel at his s...

Conrad Black Lessons: Is ?Management Integrity? an Oxymoron? II

Today's post is a continuation of Ed Rempels article "Conrad Black Lessons – Is “Management Integrity” an Oxymoron? - I.  One of the truly amazing things about Warren Buffett, beyond his amazing returns (23%/year for over 30 years) is how rarely he lost money on any investment. Conrad Black Lessons? Is ?Management Integrity? an Oxymoron? (Part 1)

Warren Buffet said: "In looking for people to hire, you look for three qualities: integrity, intelligence, and energy. And if they don't have the first, the other two will kill you." The story of Conrad Black, as told in the media, is of a very intelligent and energetic manager that used ...

Conrad Black still out on bail
2007-07-20 01:01:00
Prosecutors’ requests to have Conrad Black’s bail privileges revoked, has been denied today by a Chicago judge. Lord Black was convicted three counts of fraud and one count of obstruction of justice - crimes that will probably result in a sentence of 30 years. I think Black forced himself to a dead end on this one, and ...
What Was Conrad Black Guilty Of?
2007-07-17 18:38:00
A recent article in the Guardian makes some interesting points:It is in the nature of court cases that findings of guilt lend an artificial certainty to the world. Black will now find himself spoken of as another Robert Maxwell. But while Black's detractors were quickly out of the traps to say "we told you so", it became clear during the trial that nothing going on at Hollinger was in the same league as the Mirror under Maxwell. Before his trial the result had been seen even by Black's circle as a foregone conclusion. "There's no way a blue collar jury in Chicago can let a man who looks like Conrad off every charge," said one of his friends to me, before the trial began.Given that the central charges failed, it does make me wonder if he was convicted of being unapologetic about being rich and being called Lord Black? Perhaps the verdict had as much to do with the jury selection process and where the prosecution chose to hold the trial than whatever Lord Black actually did or did ...

Conrad Black leaves the federal courthouse surrounded by the media Wednesday March 14, 2007 in Chicago, Illinois.
