?Lifelong Conservative? Throwing all Principles to The Winds and Voting for
2008-07-17 18:49:00 -By Warner Todd Huston Larry Hunter claims he is a “lifelong conservative.” Yet, in his recent New York Daily News article, he also says he is voting for Barack Obama for president. The two simply cannot coexist. One has to be obliterated in favor of the other. And, regardless of the facile reasoning Hunter gives ...

Populus poll gives 20 point Conservative lead.
2008-06-09 23:55:00 From the Times:Public support for Labour and Gordon Brown continues to plunge to new lows with the Prime Minister's leadership rating falling to a level even below that suffered by Iain Duncan Smith according to a new poll for The Times.Labour?s rating has dropped by 4 points since early May to 25 per cent, with the Conservatives up 5 points to 45 per cent. This is by far the worst Labour position since 1997 and the best Tory one. The Liberal Democrats are up one point at 20 per cent, according to the Populus poll. Only three-fifths of those who voted Labour in 2005 say they would do so now, compared with 95 per cent of Tories staying loyal. Almost one in five of those who voted Labour in 2005 say they would vote Tory in an election now. Moreover, Mr Brown has lost the benefit of the doubt of voters. His leader rating (on a 0 to 10 scale of very bad to very good) has fallen for the fifth time running, down from a peak of 5.49 last July to 3.9 now. This is lower any of the other sev...

Caroline Spelman - A storm in a Teacup?
2008-06-08 16:26:00 I've read some terrible rubbish over the last day or so about Caroline Spelman paying he live in nanny to work as her Constituency secretary during the day (Including some right leaning Blogs). For one thing this is very old news, for another, Tina Haynes (the nanny) did act as Caroline's Constituency secretary for the period in question. Spelman's Constituency phone number was her home number at the time and Tina dealt with all the calls coming into the house when Caroline was away. She did the filing and dealt with the office correspondence. Apparently she also provided Constituency meeting arrangements on Fridays. The fact is that Caroline stopped this arrangement when the Whip told her that it could be open to misinterpretation. It is also a fact that Caroline had to hire someone else as her Constituency secretary to take over the nanny's office duties during the day. The Tax payer LOST NOTHING from the arrangement with the nanny. In fact her replacement probably cost us more...

Conservative Agenda- Part 3 of 5
2008-06-06 16:55:00 By Alan GableThe Rule of Judges:"The germ of destruction of our nation is in the power of the judiciary, an irresponsible body-working like gravity by night and by day, gaining a little today and a little tomorrow, and advancing its noiseless step like a thief over the field of jurisdiction, until all shall render powerless the checks of one branch over the other and will become as venal and oppressive as the government from which we separated." Thom Jefferson-1821The third and most fundamental tenet in a new conservative agenda must be to restore our federal judiciary to its proper constitutional place. Throughout the preceding decades, our federal courts have gradually inched their way into a role of muted tyrrany. Liberalism no longer brings legislative ideas into the governance of the American citizen through the Constitutional process but it looks to the courts to legislate; a power reserved only for the elected members of our Congress along with the signature of the Preside...

Run Conservative for the Nomination, Then Go Moderate to Win
2008-06-05 16:59:00 THE KID’S TABLE?The Reagan Mythological Makers like to wax poetic about how Ronald Reagan won as a conservative, wooing conservative Democrats to his side. Fact is, it didn’t happen that way. He won over Democrats for two reasons. First, Jimmy Carter, his opponent was the most incompetent and worst President in US history. The other reason – he waged one of the most positive campaigns in modern history. Do you see the word “conservative” in these ads? It isn’t needed. Reagan offered something positive. He did not offer change. He was himself, much the same way John McCain is ...

Excitable Andy, Mr. Conservative, Wuvs The Missiah!
2008-06-04 14:36:00 I really hope, for Michelle Obama’s sake, that Andrew Sullivan is kept away from the Missiah, cause I think he wants Barack’s baby* If I needed reassurance that this man is the most formidable force in American politics today, his speech tonight confirmed it….. One more thing: with McCain’s and Clinton’s speeches, you could not forget the politics of it. With Obama, you forgot about that at times. You actually lifted your eyes a little and believed a little and hoped a little. Yes, he can. And anyone who under-estimates that will regret it. Wait a moment: isn’t Sullivan “been a major conservative voice in U.S. politics for 15 years“? Anyone want to bet that sometime in the next 2 months Excitable Andy comes out and endorses Obama, who gives him the vapors? You gotta love that part about lifting your eyes. Missiah indeed! *That is not a slap at Andrew being gay. I would write that same thing even if he wasn’t. Copyright © 20...

Mugabe looks foward to a Conservative Government.
2008-06-04 12:41:00 Jason Brown, Founder of The Political Wire has posted an interesting article on Robert Mugabe's sudden found love for the British Conservatives:After months of bad news for the Prime Minister, there is finally some good news for Gordon Brown, Robert Mugabe?s stooges have come out in support of the Conservatives party. Sam Akaki, a journalist for the government?s mouthpiece, the Harare Herald, claims that the British government has engineered Zimbabwe?s descent into chaos:For Mr Akati, the solution to all this unfair and nasty bullying of the Mugabe regime is the return of a Conservative government.Only with the Conservative Party in power in the UK can that country hope to salvage its rapidly deteriorating relationship with Zimbabwe and Africa.Isn?t it now plainly clear that the British relationship with Zimbabwe in particular and Africa in general will not improve until the Conservative Party takes over in the United Kingdom?Quite what he hopes David Cameron will do isn?t clear. Also a parish councillor in Warborough, John was made an OBE in 2000.The election should take place in the next two or three weeks. John said: "For now I just want to say that it is a huge privilege to have been selected as the Conservative candidate for my home constituency. ?I plan to spend the next few weeks talking to as many local people as possible about the issues that affect us all in South Oxfordshire."Good luck John Howell.I wonder what form of idiocy we can expect from the Labour campaign this time around.

Would you volunteer to pay more tax?
2008-05-30 09:09:00 There is not much doubt that our next government will be a Conservative one. There is also little doubt that David Cameron will inherit massive public spending and an outrageous amount of debt. Especially if, as some pundits believe, Labour initiate a scorched earth policy. So to the point: something rather drastic is going to have be done to get the economy back on track. Cutting spending is one option, but as we know Cameron will be pretty much stuck with Labour spending plans. Raising taxes cannot contemplated in the current economical climate. Of course there is a ridiculous amount of waste that can be cut out, which will be George Osborne's first task as Chancellor - along with the rest of our new ministers. This morning I came up with a radical idea whilst driving to work listening to Radio 5. What if David Cameron asked us to volunteer to pay more tax? I'm not talking about a lot individually, maybe 1, 2 or 3%. To tell the truth I am in no way a wealthy man, however the recen...

Feulner Jr., president of the Heritage Foundation,1985.John McCain and George W. Bush should be honored to be in such august company as Ronald Reagan. Why? Now though, they protray themselves as ...
Professor of Conservative Thought
2008-05-30 01:31:00 Jacob Levin over at The Sample Gates writes about a new professorship at the University of Colorado Boulder — a “professor of conservative thought.” Having heard this, any jokes I could make about UC Boulder suddenly seem inadequate. So great is the political bent on their campus that they are thinking about hiring a Professor of Conservative Thought. This is not someone in perhaps their Economics or political science department who teaches a subject and is in fact conservative, but rather someone whose job it is to think conservatively. It will be very important for the professor of conservative thought to be granted immunity from the various university speech codes and other academic restraints designed to limit thought and debate since it is likely that every weapon available in the arsenal to silence dissent will be used against this professor. While conservatism on campus is a rare thing, students can still learn to be conservative by virtue of exposure to the...

A Conservative Agenda - Part 2 of 5
2008-05-29 17:01:00 Part 2 of our Conservative Agenda deals with Fundamental Tax Reform. The thing with federal taxation issues is that the vast majority of the populous knows as much about tax structure as I know about AstroPhysics; I can see the stars at night and I am bound by gravity but my understanding ends only at what I deal with on a daily basis. This is similar to the normal American's understanding of taxation; he/she understands only that which binds his or her current financial decision making. As a matter of full disclosure, I am a tax accountant by trade and a card carrying member of Americans For Tax Reform. I have a broad grasp on the subject matter but there are many times that tax code confuses the mess out of me. It is complicated and technical and ever-changing. It is a jumbled fiasco of legalese and politically motivated caveats. The need for over arching tax reform is prevalent and immediate.Conservative leadership should be bringing the heat for fundamental reform instead of thr...

How George W. Bush converted a conservative into an Ex-Con
2008-05-27 18:31:00 What made a lifelong Republican voter take a step back and re-evaluate? Well as anyone who has a child can tell you, this makes you look at the world very differently than before. Politics took a new meaning when the author considered effects for his own daughter. So, after years of casual following of politics, he finally sat down and spent some time researching presidential candidates for ?08 with what he describes as a "truly open mind, for the first time." This led to further soul-searching and research into all manner of political information, including the current state of affairs as a nation. The conclusion?"I am no longer a conservative. I am now an ex-conservative. An ExCon, if you will. Join me and let?s try to make a difference."The reality:"At the end of the day, it doesn?t really matter if you are at war or at peace - the federal government must be fiscally responsible. Sure, if we are under imminent threat of being destroyed, then maybe caution goes to the wind, b...

David Cameron - Pro England - Pro The Union.
2008-05-23 16:20:00 In his speech to the Scottish Conservative Party Conference, David Cameron tried to convey his feelings that whilst there is a political imbalance across the United Kingdom which needs desperately to be addressed, the Union should be protected. You may have noticed that the banner at the top of my blog says "pro England" That is still true today as when it was designed for me by Liam Murray a good while ago (Liam also designed Iain Dale's new blog). In my mind being pro England does not necessitate the need to be anti any of the other members of the Union. I have lived and worked in Scotland and have a daughter born there. I served in the RN for 16 years and worked alongside many great friends from all four of the countries that make up our Kingdom. The Union just requires a measure of balance.David said:"Let me make it one hundred percent clear: I am passionate about the Union. I don't want to be the Prime Minister of England. A Conservative Agenda - Part 1 of 5
2008-05-23 15:55:00 Tom Delay wrote a little piece over at Townhall.com yesterday that broadly outlined a 5 point "conservative agenda". Over the next 5 Fridays, I think I'll direct my thoughts on each of these 5 and try to lay out what I think the conservative movement should be doing. The first facet of a new conservative agenda is victory in the war on terror. No issue in this or any election, carries greater significance. The initial front of this war is the two-headed beast of Iraq and Afghanistan. We can all agree that a free and stable Iraq is in the best interest of the United States as well as the Iraqi people. What this President and each chief executive over the last 50 years has lacked is the willingness the break the enemy's back. Lincoln had Sherman deal the knock out blow by means that seem to many like brutality. Can we forget Hiroshima/Nagasaki? This country has seemingly lost her willingness to finish. A conservative agenda should hinge on this idea; that we must end this wa...

2008-05-23 03:27:00 Well it's 2:24 in the morning and the returning officer is about to announce the result of the Crewe and Nantwich by-election. It's obvious that the Conservatives have won. The rumour is that it's a big win. Here goes:Con: 20539lab 12679Lib: 6044Get in!That fantastic result equates to a swing of 17.6% and a majority of almost 8,000. What now for Gordon Brown? What is that scraping sound I can hear? - it sounds a little like several knives being sharpened.Sent from my BlackBerry® wireless deviceUPDATE @02:45: John McDonnell is the first Labour MP to stick the knife into Gordon Brown this morning. I doubt very much that he will be the last:"Things are just going from bad to worse for the Government. "It would be an immense misreading of the situation for New Labour ministers to dismiss this result as simply mid-term blues. The prime minister's re-launch after the disaster of the local election results has proved to be totally ineffective."

Daily Mirror - Has the pro-Labour tide turned?
2008-05-19 12:17:00 I was amazed to read an article in today's Daily Mirror that attacked the Labour "Tory toff" campaign being fought in Crewe and Nantwich. As Tony Parsons points out: "Gwyneth Dunwoody would never have run such a shallow campaign." Such critique of Labour's campaign comes as a welcome surprise after reading Brian Reade's pathetic article in the same paper last week. So I've got to ask: Are the Mirror going the way of the Sun in their support for Cameron's Conservatives? Has the Mirror's pro-Labour tide turned? Here is a snippet from Tony's article:As Labour supporters shrieked about rich Tories in Bentleys, they did not seem to have the faintest idea that Bentley has provided generations of Crewe families with work. In Crewe, a Bentley is a potent symbol of highly skilled, proud working men and a brand recognised around the world. Conservatives - 20 point lead in Sunday Times YouGov Poll
2008-05-17 18:09:00 From the Sunday Times: The latest YouGov poll for the Sunday Times makes depressing reading for Gordon Brown ahead of the coming week?s key by-election test in Crewe & Nantwich. The Tories have a 20-point national poll lead, up from 16 a month ago. Labour is on just 25% of the vote (down 2), with the Tories at 45% (up 2) and the Liberal Democrats on 18%, also up 2. David Cameron is beginning to move towards the kind of poll leads that Tony Blair enjoyed before his landslide victory in 1997. What I'm pleased to see from this Poll is that Gordon Brown's tax bribe failed to come off - 47% say it was a cynical ploy ahead of the by-election. 69% of voters say Brown is not up to the job and 59% say he should step down before the next election. Any of the cheering Labour MPs at Darling's tax announcement last week will not be too happy today. The people have seen through them.
