CONSUMER REPORTS PICKS 11 WORST CARS
2008-03-31 14:53:00 U.S. SUVs again fill many of the slots, though Toyota gets two picksConsumer Reports' annual list of the 11 worst cars in America is out. Automotive analysts for the magazine took a look at more than 260 vehicles in this year's evaluation and once again SUVs made in the U.S. dominated the field.Surprisingly, two Toyotas hit rock bottom as well and Chrysler placed three models on the list of infamy with the Jeep brand. The Consumer Reports list differs from ConsumerAffairs.Com's annual listings of the year's biggest automotive outrages and the worst used cars. The Consumer Reports listings represent the opinions of the magazine's analysts while ConsumerAffairs.Com's picks are based on the real-world experience of consumers who share their experiences. Here are the results for 2008, according to Consumer Reports:•Jeep Wrangler Unlimited: The Wrangler Unlimited is reported to produce poor ride and handling as well as dismal fuel economy, fit and finish.•Hummer H3 five-cylinder:...

Asian Autos Dominate Consumer Reports List By Anthony Fontanelle
2008-03-29 22:33:00 There are hundreds of new vehicles in the automotive realm, to test what cars excel, Consumer Reports evaluated 10 cars, trucks, sport utilities and vans considering these traits: safety, durability, and mileage. Those three traits might defy to a certain degree the magazine’s own testing. For instance, in the family car category, Honda Accord upstaged Nissan Altima because the latter has no electric stability control (ESC) as standard feature. The ratings made by the consumer magazine offer priceless guidance to auto shoppers. Through the ratings, shoppers can weigh which car is worthy of their dime. This year, some notable changes were made. Korean cars topped two of the categories on the "best" list. Also, Chevy Silverado 1500 Crew Cab pickup from General Motors made it to the list for first time since 2005. Additionally, Lexus LS 460L, from the sub-brand of Toyota, was named best luxury sedan. The annual April issue of the auto magazine includes profiles on more than 260 vehicles...

Consumer Reports Rates Toyota Highlander Tops Among Three-Row SUVs
2007-12-05 15:26:00 Buick Enclave also impresses, Ford Taurus X improves; New Chrysler minivans disappointThe redesigned Toyota Highlander received top scores in a new Consumer Reports test of four midsized three-row SUVs, though it did not earn the organization's Recommended designation. Still, the Highlander now tops a field of 14 similar vehicles. The Buick Enclave and Ford Taurus X didn't score as well in this test, but both bested the Subaru Tribeca. In a test extra, the new Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town & Country minivans proved disappointing. Details are available in the January issue of Consumer Reports magazine, on sale December 4, and to subscribers to http://www.consumerreports.org/-.The Highlander is the first model to feel the effects of a decision by Consumer Reports that it would no longer automatically award Toyotas with its Recommended designation because its Annual Car Reliability Survey showed several other models had problems. In the past, Consumer Reports automatically ...

Consumer Reports? top five reliable family cars list includes two hybrids,
2007-10-19 05:49:00 Two of the five most reliable family cars in the U.S. are hybrids, according to the readers surveyed by Consumer Reports in the non-profit magazine's latest reliability survey. At the number one spot we find the Toyota Prius, and coming in at number 4 is the Toyota Camry Hybrid (note: in the CBC article that mentions this list, the Camry entry includes an asterisk that is then not identified anywhere on the page, so go figure). The other cars in the top five are Honda Accord (#2), Hyundai Sonata, 4-cyl. (#3), and Ford Fusion (#5). Consumer Reports says that, overall, Ford has gotten better with its vehicle reliability recently, while Toyota has slipped. Toyota still dominated the ratings, though, with 17 of the top 39 most-reliable vehicles. CR's four least reliable vehicles are listed after the jump.[Source: CBC News via Green Car Congress]Consumer Reports least reliable family cars Chevrolet Impala V8 Volkswagen Passat Pontiac G6 Volvo S40/V50
How does Consumer Reports justify rating without testing?
2007-10-18 04:30:00 For many years, American auto industry advocates have accused Consumer’s Union and its Consumer Reports publication of being biased against domestic American brands. It’s been said that if the identical car were manufactured by Toyota and Chevrolet, CR would rate the Toyota above the Chevy simply based on nameplate. But Consumer Reports always claimed it was nothing but the soul of objectivity. Now it turns out they were dissembling, if not outright lying, about their objectivity – and their standards. Consumer Reports has been recommending the Toyota brand without bothering to test it or even have any data about reliability to back up the recommendation. Yesterday, Consumer Reports announced that the newest Toyota – the Camry – had below average reliability, and that the brand had clearly slipped in its quality. The magazine appears to have been the last to know, as the J. D. Powers surveys have shown Toyota slipping i...
Consumer Reports Says New Tundra Is Below Average
2007-10-17 07:27:00 Toyota quality is slipping, and Consumer Reports says it’s due in large part to the new Tundra. Evidently, Consumer Reports has found that the new Tundra, specifically the V8 4×4 model, has “below average” reliability. Even more astounding, the new Camry V6 model was also found to have “below average” reliability. Because of the poor ...
Consumer Reports: The Lexus GS AWD = Below Average
2007-10-17 06:00:00 The news today is that the AWD versions of the Lexus GS, along with two Toyotas, have been dropped from Consumer Reports’ 2007 Recommended list. The net result, Toyota as a whole (including Lexus and Scion) has dropped from first overall to third, behind Honda and Subaru. What were the problems with the AWD GS, which now ranks Below-Average? Consumer Reports asserts that the drop is due to the “accessories and audio system in the all-wheel-drive Lexus GS sedan”, which makes very little sense, as the AWD and RWD both share the same components. For some background, the prevailing complaint among Club Lexus GS owners is of creaks and rattles, as well as overall interior material quality, but nothing to add any weight to CR’s reasoning. What I found startling is that Consumer Reports was essentially giving all Toyota models a free-pass to their Recommended list until now: Still, because of these findings, CR will no longer recommend any new or redesigned Toyota-b...
Consumer Reports dumps on Toyota
2007-10-17 00:25:00 BELOW AVERAGE. That’s where Consumer Reports puts the new Toyota Camry and the four wheel drive model of the new Toyota Tundra. That means both models are off the recommended list at CR. The magazine does not recommend vehicles with below average reliability ratings. Moreover, the magazine has announced that it will no longer recommend Toyota products without reliability data on the specific model and design. In the past, the magazine was – despite its reputation as a publication based on research – simply willing to recommend a Toyota on faith, based on past reputation. No more. The latest quality and reliability rankings from Consumer Reports confirms what J. D. Powers has been saying: Toyota’s quality and reliability is slipping – badly. But, Ford, on the other hand, is improving – a lot. Of 44 Ford models rated, 41 – 93% - rated average or better than average in reliability and the Ford Fusion, Mercury ...

Consumer Reports rightly ponders specific fuel consumption
2007-10-05 03:11:00 I've written in this space on previous occasions about the reality of specific fuel consumption (the amount of fuel needed to produce a given amount of power) in modern cars. While the Corporate Average Fuel Economy standards have remained static for the past two decades, the power output of modern engines has skyrocketed at the same time that mpg numbers have stagnated. When car-makers whine about not being able meet proposed new standards, it simply doesn't ring true because if they can make so much more power from the same amount of fuel, they can surely make the same amount of power they used to make from less fuel.Consumer Reports noted this after attending a preview of the 2008 Mazda CX-9 which gets a bump in displacement from 3.5L to 3.7L along with 10 hp more than before. This comes with no increase in fuel consumption. When car-makers make upgrades like this one has to wonder if every car-maker needs a compact cross-over like the Rav4 that goes 0-60 in 6.7 seconds. Clearl...

Consumer Reports rates S2000 accident avoidance much better than average..
2007-09-05 14:45:00 An article in Forbes titled "Top 20 Most Dangerous Vehicles" includes the S2000 as a vehicle you wouldn't want to be in during a crash. Why? NHTSA has awarded it a five-star rating in their side-impact test, as well as a five-star mark for rollover risk. That's great. But the problem Forbes has is that the car doesn't have side-impact air bags. Of course, those are not required by law. We're back to the old fight over what is and is not required... and why radical Gov't agencies tell us to only buy cars that offer advanced safety options beyond what is required. Why do they think that is their job? Nonetheless, reality is that the trend will eventually mandate side air bags, and the S2000 will have to change to accommodate them. And the current car can't do so because the seats are right up against the doors. This is part of the problem that Honda products planners are dealing with now: if there is going to be another S2000,...
Kim Kleman, "Consumer Reports" editor: Mr. Media Interview, pt. 2
2007-08-24 22:03:00 (Return to Part 1)BOB ANDELMAN: You?ll be happy to know that we?re beyond that topic now. Let me ask you about a different kind of testing, something that?s really come into the public conscience the last couple of months, and that is tainted food from overseas, in particular, China. Is that something that Consumer Reports can and will deal with, or is that beyond the scope of what you guys do?KIM KLEMAN: No. It?s absolutely something that we?re dealing with. Let me say that, several years ago, we put out a report called ?Hazard in Aisle Five? that took a look at imports, especially imports from China, and we didn?t look at food specifically, although as you noted, that?s clearly part of the mix now. But we were looking at the Consumer Product Safety Commission and what they spot-check and what they?re missing and why that?s happening. We sent shoppers out throughout the country pulling products off dollar store shelves and discount store shelves that looked iffy and brought them ba...

Kim Kleman, "Consumer Reports" editor: Mr. Media Interview, pt. 1
2007-08-24 21:59:00 In the 1970?s, my dad never made any purchase of substance without consulting Consumer Reports. Vacuum cleaners, toaster ovens, window air conditioners, used cars -- he never made a move without CR.In those pre-Internet days, he collected the magazine?s back issues the way I collected comic books. I just kept my comics a lot neater and more organized than he did his magazines.Today?s Consumer Reports is very different from the one my dad admired, thanks to the Internet. There are a whole host of web sites and services competing to provide consumer information in what used to be a niche owned solely by Consumer Reports. Consumers now have instant free access to consumer-written product performance reviews from Amazon.com to Epinions and everywhere in between. In the wired world, it seems, everybody has an opinion and wants to share it.We?ll talk about that today with my guest Kim Kleman. Kim is the new editor of Consumer Reports, the flagship publication of Consumers Union. She?s als...
