The Value Of Text-To-Screen Consumer Data-Collection

Text-to-screen is a concept that enables a brand ...

Brand Positioning Online In The Age Of Consumer Driven Media
2009-10-26 19:15:00
I landed up on a blog post about advertising and communications, about how they are different from one another and their overall impact on brand positioning. In essence the post revolved around the idea that advertising is brand positioning and not communicating product details. My immediate reaction, whether right or wrong, was that this idea doesn’t hold true online. So I set myself up on finding resources on the web that might prove me right. Blame my morbid luck these days, I only found well SEO’d and utterly useless articles in my search. It basically left me with no reference to create a hypothesis at the least on why I found the post perhaps not applicable to the web. And given my lack of any strong technical background of marketing and branding, I perhaps shouldn’t be speculating on the same. However, this did give me enough thought on how a brand and its positioning efforts need to take in to account social media. Clearly it wasn’t just about where y...

Inflation At The Consumer Level Rose By 0.7 Percent
2009-07-16 09:42:00
The market moved broadly higher at the open this morning as positive earnings reports outweighed lack lackluster economic data. The Commerce Department said inflation at the consumer level rose by 0.7 percent last month, slightly higher than the 0.6 percent increase that economists were expecting. It was the biggest one-month gain since a 0.7 percent increase last July. The big jump was seen as a temporary blip, however.Inflation is not expected to be a problem any time soon given a severe recession which is keeping a lid on wage pressures. The Federal Reserve reported production at the nation's factories, mines and utilities fell 0.4 percent last month as the recession crimped demand for a wide range of manufactured goods, including cars, machinery and household appliances. The decline, however, was not as bad as May.Industrial activity posted a revised 1.2 percent drop then, which turned out to be slightly worse than first reported.Oil prices rose to near $61 a barrel as investors ...

Consumer Burrowing Plunged At Fastest Pace In 18 Years
2009-05-07 23:12:00
Consumer borrowing plunged in March at the fastest pace in 18 years as Americans put away their credit cards and hoarded cash amid the worst recession in decades. The Federal Reserve said Thursday that consumer borrowing dropped 5.2 percent in March, the biggest decline since an 8.1 percent fall in December 1990.In dollar terms, consumer borrowing plunged by $11.1 billion. That's the largest dollar amount on records dating to 1943, and more than three times the $3.5 billion drop that economists expected. The borrowing category that includes credit cards dropped 6.8 percent in March after a 12.1 percent plunge in February. The category that includes auto loans fell 4.2 percent after rising by 1.2 percent in February. Is that good news or bad news for the economy ? Short term NO, but long term YES.Goods news in long term, since savings rate goes up and Americans build true wealth rather than living on credit day in and day out.Bad news in short term, since company profits go down, which...

The Left: Stepping on the Consumer
2009-03-28 20:34:00
An interesting, and mostly unsurprising report from the New York Times this morning.  Indeed, the only thing surprising about it is that it comes from the New York Times. Here’s some of it: SAN FRANCISCO — It sounds like such a simple thing to do: buy some new light bulbs, screw them in, save the planet. But a lot of people these days are finding the new compact fluorescent bulbs anything but simple. Consumers who are trying them say they sometimes fail to work, or wear out early. At best, people discover that using the bulbs requires learning a long list of dos and don’ts. Take the case of Karen Zuercher and her husband, in San Francisco. Inspired by watching the movie “An Inconvenient Truth,” they decided to swap out nearly every incandescent bulb in their home for energy-saving compact fluorescents. Instead of having a satisfying green moment, however, they wound up coping with a mess. “Here’s my sad collection of bulbs that didn’t work,” Ms. Zuercher said ...

Getting Your Consumer Product Into China.
2009-02-23 01:00:00
Silk Road International has an excellent post on importing consumer products into China. The post is entitled, "Q & A about Importing into China," and it starts out discussing why importing Western product into China is so rife with opportunity. To grossly summarize, more and more Chinese will pay for the better quality and higher prestige Western goods offer. The post then provides a very helpful discussion on the difficulties of importing product into China and then doles out the following tips: • Read Xiao Lu’s book [Elite China] —no matter what you’re importing. [Bottom Line: Know the market] • Find a trust-worthy partner. Take the time (months) to do DD on this one. This one person, more than anything else you do, could sink/steal/make your business. • Pick one region or one domestic distributor to start out with. China’s big, don’t get greedy. • Build some serious guanxi with the port and regional officials that you’re going to be using....

Consumer Staples (XLP): Play defense
2009-01-08 06:00:00
"My favorite idea for 2009 is a defensive play -- the Consumer Staples SPDR (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/quote.htm?sym=xlp) (NYSE: XLP (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/quote.htm?sym=xlp))," says Leonard E. Goodall in his No-Load Portfolios. Here's his review of the ETF."My recommendation of Consumer Staples SPDR is based on my assumption that the U.S. and world economies will continue to decline through most of 2009, hitting a bottom in the fourth quarter of 2009 or the first quarter of 2010."If I thought the economy would recover sooner, I would prefer stocks and funds that are more aggressive in investment strategy."XLP provides good investor protection in an uncertain economy. Its major holdings include Colgate, Coca Cola, Pepsico, CVS, Walmart and Procter Gamble."In tough times people will continue to buy toothpaste, medicines, soap and other necessities. Of course, two of its other large holdings, Altria and Anheuser Busch, recognize they will also continue to drink an...
