Subversive Spaces: Surrealism + Contemporary Art
2009-01-26 21:35:00
Visitors find their experience of space further challenged in the remainder of Subversive Spaces. The exhibition examines the legacy of the surrealist project in two distinct areas. The first ?Psychic Interiors?, uses themes of psychic disturbance ? anxiety and hysteria ? to explore the constraining spaces of the home. ?Wandering the City? follows the Surrealists? preoccupation with walking around the streets as a means to discover hidden social spaces as well as unconscious fears and desires. Surrealists: Dorothea Tanning, Claude Cahun, Salvador Dal, Max Ernst, Ren Magritte, Hans Bellmer, Dora Maar, Jacques-Andr Boiffard, Brassa, Giorgio De Chirico, Eugene Atget, Humphrey Spender, Henri Michaux Contemporary: Lucy Gunning, Anna Gaskell, Sarah Lucas, Douglas Gordon, Markus Schwinwald, Paula Rego, Francesca Woodman, Robert Gober, Mona Hatoum, William Anastasi,Tony Oursler, Ralph Rumney, Katie Holten, Francis Als Subversive Spaces: About the show

Judgment and Contemporary Art Criticism
2009-01-20 17:13:00
"Judgment and Contemporary Art Criticism, is a two-day forum on the state of contemporary art criticism co-organized by Artspeak and Fillip. Through a keynote address by Tirdad Zolghadr and two panels made up of international critics Diedrich Diederichsen, Jeff Derksen, Sylvie Fortin, Maria Fusco, Tom Morton and William Wood, the forum seeks to address what is at stake in the shifting value of judgment within contemporary art writing. A renewed interest in the efficacy and function of art criticism has arisen in the last decade, embedded in art market speculation, global conflict and recent economic crises. This forum will engage with the key issues produced from these conversations, specifically returning to the role of valuation in contemporary art writing."ARTSPEAK: Events - Judgment and Contemporary Art Criticism: Forum

Tactics. Optical Instruments in History and Contemporary Art
2008-11-05 21:36:00
"Visual Tactics.Optical Instruments in History and Contemporary Art23.11.2008 bis 10.05.2009Pictures and images have become the leading medium of our time ? the area in which they become active and, hence, the continuous variation in our way of seeing things is a consistent field of exploration. Parallel to video, the digital camera and the computer, today?s artists frequently turn to the characteristic charm of historic media. This exhibition highlights contemporary artistic positions in connection with pieces from the Werner Nekes Collection. On view will be approximately 200 works from this collection and around 60 pieces from contemporary artists since the 1960s such as William Kentridge, Kara Walker, Mischa Kuball, Sigmar Polke, along with many others."Museum for Contemporary Art Siegen - Visual Tactics. Mike Rea Wooden Constructions
2008-04-30 11:11:00
Mike Rea makes things out of wood. Pretty frikkin awesome things actually. From fish tanks, to space-age war tanks, to Mecha-suits for Stephen Hawking. This guy has a wild imagination and his design realisation skills are second to none. The artist's statement:"The intent of my work is to create something short of its outcome. My goal is to create the idea of an object that remains a dream. The objects I create are based on fictions, rather than realities. I have always been interested in the ephemeral worlds established in film, or even in popular culture. Fictions or established hearsay allow for a flawed interpretation, which leads to a flawed result. The sublime is unattainable, and not an option."[VIA]

Lucy Mclauchlan Solo Show at Fifty24SF
2008-04-14 19:57:00
UK-based artist Lucy Mclauchlan just opened her first ever solo show entitled "Restricted Freedom" for the US. The show was held at Upper Playground?s FIFTY24SF Gallery. Like the Herakut show I just posted about yesterday, the show was a site specific installation that allowed for the artists to work freely on their art within the confines of the gallery. An excellent concept that we will definitely see more of this year I reckon.Have a look at her website, sometimes the most simple formats of black and white can be the most effective and visually striking.[VIA]

Local River Fish Tank Concept
2008-04-09 20:38:00
Thought that this was a great conceptual piece that I would like to see more in people's homes. I have always loved the idea of controlling a self-sustaining ecosystem in a tank (I'm a bit of a bio-nerd)"Local River is the "home storage unit for fish and greens" as conceived by Mathieu Lehanneur with Anthony van den Bossche. Inspired by the Locavores, a group of culinary adventurers who eat foods produced in a radius of 100 miles around their city, they have proposed a home storage unit for live freshwater fish combined with a mini vegetable patch. This DIY fish-farm-cum-kitchen-garden is based on the principle of aquaponics coupled with the exchange and interdependence of two living organisms - plants and fish. The plants extract nutrients from the nitrate-rich dejecta of the fish. In doing so they act as a natural filter that purifies the water and maintains a vital balance for the eco-system in which the fish live."-words VIAInfo [VIA]Lehanneur's SITE.

Well wouldn’t you know it, today I came home from my boring evryday office life and switched on my computer to check my e-mails, only to find I had an e-mail from Gallery Gora in Montreal inviting me to exhibit my works there.  I was delighted and over the moon as they have a fantastic gallery.  I thought this is my big chance to move forward.  They are located opposite the Musée d’Art Contemporain in Montreal, Canada which is even better.  I only hope this is really as step forward.  If you are Canadian and live or have been to Montreal, I would be grateful for some info on the place.   www.gallerygora.com Merci

The Dragon Bar. A haven for graffiti writers for many many years. At least two generations of writers/streetartists have been drunk there and scribbled all over the walls. However, 4 weeks ago, the venue was torn down and will soon be turned into yet another group of non-descript "modern apartments". It was where I met many of my current friends 6 years ago and we will all miss it! A sad sad day is now upon us....See more pics and more juicy details of what was left at the Dragon Bar site HERE.p.s. a great post on the Graffoto blog....R.I.P. Dragon Bar

Color Blind artist Learns to Paint by Hearing
2008-02-26 13:53:00
According to an article on the Times Online, Neil Harbisson is a color-blind (Black & white sight only) artist who has recently been given the ability to paint with a full range of colors using a small gadget that allows him to "hear" the hue of the color pallette. He has been fitted with a device called an Eyeborg, which converts 360 colours into different sounds. "As an art student at Dartington College of Arts in Devon, he painted only in black and white because that is all he saw. But three years ago he met Adam Montandon, a cybernetics expert who came to give a lecture at the college. After the talk, Montandon was told of Harbisson?s condition and he took up the challenge of solving the problem, enabling Harbisson to paint in colour. The artist suffers from achromatopsia ? or complete congenital colour blindness. Montandon created the Eyeborg system, which is a head-mounted digital camera that reads the colours directly in front of it. The camera is connected to a laptop comput...
