John Scofield - This meets that
2008-01-08 21:01:00
John Scofield (born December 26, 1951 in Dayton, Ohio) is a jazz guitarist and composer, who played and eventually collaborated with Miles Davis. A bebop master, Scofield is simultaneously well acquainted with R&B and blues styles which he mixes seamlessly with his jazz playing. He recorded with Charles Mingus in 1976, and replaced Pat Metheny in Gary Burton's quartet. In autumn 1976 he signed a contract with Enja Records, and he released his first album East Meets West in 1977. In 1979 he formed a trio with Steve Swallow and Adam Nussbaum. He later joined Miles Davis, with whom he remained until 1985.While still with Davis, he released Electric Outlet (1984). Still Warm (1985) followed after he left Davis's group. At the beginning of the 1990s, he formed a quartet with Joe Lovano with whom he recorded several important albums for Blue Note Records. Time on My Hands (1990), with Lovano, Charlie Haden and Jack DeJohnette, showcased Scofield's guitar and Mingus-influenced writing...

John Scofield (with Medeski Martin Wood) - A Go Go
2008-01-06 16:16:00
John Scofield (electric & acoustic guitars, whistle); John Medeski (organ, Wurlitzer, clavinet, piano); Chris Wood (acoustic & electric basses); Billy Martin (drums, tambourine). Recorded at Avatar Studios, New York, New York. On A GO GO, Scofield teams with Generation X funksters Medeski, Martin and Wood for an album of greasy grooves and hip downtown sonorities. The leader's guitar and John Medeski's keyboards weave and sway in a laid back slink over the lazy, ringing back beats of Billy Martin. And just when you think the groove has bent and twisted to the verge of falling to pieces, bassist Chris Wood is the glue that holds it all together. All ten tracks are Scofield originals but it was surely a group effort to develop such a deep pocket of funk. From the hip-hop of the opening title cut we get a sense that this is not your average jazz quartet. The James Brown-ish "Chank" captures an all new Scofield sound that's even more harsh and gritty than normal, as he scratc...

Nils Petter Molvaer - Solid Ether
2007-12-20 21:09:00
Nils Petter Molvaer is a young Norwegian trumpeter whose allegiances lie less with Miles Davis than with the sonic architecture of ambient, jungle, and drum 'n' bass dance grooves. But since this is an ECM recording, you'd expect him to take a more abstract and ethereal approach, and he does. With the CD recorded in 1999 and only recently released in the U.S., Molvaer is a little late to the fair, coming behind other electronica trumpeters including Tim Hagans, Jon Hassell, and Ben Neill, but his original approach to electronica groove creation, including mixing live rhythm sections with programmed beats, keeps it fresh. Molvaer orchestrates some effective grooves on the menacing "Dead Indeed" and the doomsday song of "Ligotage," but his improvisations rarely appear on the same page. His rhythms are hot and nasty, but his solos are muzzled, as if he's ruminating on the elaborate electro-percussion orchestrations. It's a great sound on the many open-ended, rhythm-free atmosphere...

Keiko Matsui - Moyo
2007-12-16 14:07:00
Keiko Matsui, born in Tokyo as Keiko Doi on July 26, 1961, is a Japanese smooth jazz/new age pianist and composer whose music and sophisticated elegance have propelled her to success and established a cult following among her fans. A prolific recording artist, Matsui's career spans three decades, during which time she has released twenty CDs (in addition to various compilations) and has received international acclaim. Matsui's music is powerful and introspective, blending both western and eastern musical influences. She has a very spiritual view of composing music, feeling out each composition as though it were, in her words, "coming to me from another space, another dimension," and "catching notes from the silence and then simply placing them together". Matsui sees music as "the great gifts from the human souls from the past, for the children of the future". She believes that music has a power to bring people together and change their lives. "We are connected by music," Matsui wr...

Triosk - The Headlight Serenade (2006)
2007-12-01 21:57:00
Triosk is an instrumental trio based in Sydney, Australia. Their music melds their jazz background (the three met at Sydney's Conservatorium of Music) with post-rock and ambient electronica, resulting in a strange, beautiful conglomeration of myriad influences. The group's members - Adrian Klumpes, Ben 'Donny' Waples, and Laurence Pike, on piano/keyboard/samples, electric/acoustic bass and drums/percussion respectively - also make extensive use of samples and processing in both studio and live shows. The group formed in 2001, with their first release - a collaboration with German experimental electronica artist Jan Jelinek called 1+3+1 - being released on the ~Scape label in November of 2003. From leftover studio time for that session came the group's first album distinct from any involvement with Jelinek, called Moment Returns, released on the Leaf Label in October of 2004. The group's current release is called The Headlight Serenade, released June 2006, also on the Leaf Label...

Marcus Johnson - The Phoenix (2007)
2007-11-13 20:00:00
It all began in 1996, when the Ohio native was pursuing both his MBA and Juris Doctorate degrees at Georgetown University . Fresh out of Howard University and ready to balance the creative and the practical with purpose, he had big dreams of releasing his own debut contemporary jazz album entitled Lessons in Love , an enigmatic masterpiece showcasing Johnson's flair for the piano. Armed with both the moral and financial support of his doting sister, he was able to release Lessons in Love, as well as launch his career as a contemporary jazz artist. In 1997, the multi-talented pianist released his sophomore album, Inter Alia . In the Kemp Mill Music retail chain, this CD outsold the Titanic soundtrack in the first two weeks after its release. This led to Johnson signing a deal with N2K Encoded Music. N2K took Inter Alia and renamed it Chocolate City Groovin' . When N2K was sold, Johnson was able to reclaim his rights to his masters and, again, started releasing CDs under the Marimel...
