Continental jet has near miss with ‘rocket’

Jet pilots aren’t used to sharing their airspace, so you can bet a rocket will get some attention. Continental Flight 1544 was flying at 5,000 feet about 11 miles east of Bush Intercontinental Airport after takeoff Monday morning when the pilot called the tower to report an object headed toward the plane. The pilot described seeing a fast moving object with a thick smoke trail nearing his airspace. The FAA now says it thinks that object was some kind of model rocket. Both the FAA and the Houston Area Joint Terrorism Task Force continue to investigate the incident that KHOU.com first reported early this afternoon.

Even though GM has said it will wait until late 2008 to name the battery supplier for the Chevy Volt, Continental CEO Manfred Wennemer told Reuters on Thursday that he believes his company has a "good chance" of winning the fight with LG Chem / CPI. Of course, it's no surprise that a CEO would talk up his company's chances, but winning the Volt contract will be a huge coup to whoever wins it. Wennemer said that not winning won't kill the company, but "it would be very, very important for us to be the one," he said. Winning the Volt deal would see Conti build a production plant in the U.S., Wennemer said. Since both Continental and CPI packs seem to be doing fine in the testing lab, there is probably a lot of number crunching and haggling going on behind closed doors to figure out which supplier can deliver the right packs to GM for the right cost. Continental jumps into turbocharger business

Car makers the world over are looking for the most cost effective ways to increase fuel economy as fuel prices continue to climb and CO2 limits and fuel economy standards come into force. One approach that seems to be appealing to most is adding direct fuel injection and turbocharging to smaller displacement engines. Continental Automotive Systems sees the trend and is jumping on the bandwagon. Continental has announced their intention to build their first turbocharger plant for production begining in 2011. The initial production run will be for 2.0L four cylinder engines at the rate of 100,000 per year. No location has been announced for the plant, but somewhere in Eastern Europe seems probable. Volkswagen is also rumored to be the first customer for Conti's turbos.[Source: Automotive News - sub. req'd]

The chief executive of Continental Airlines Inc. Lawrence W. Kellner's got compensation the company valued at nearly $6 million in 2007, down 9.3 percent from the year before, according to an analysis of a regulatory filing Friday. But about one-third of Lawrence W. Kellner's compensation was in stock and option grants, which are worth much less today than they were when granted in February 2007. Continental earned $459 million last year but its stock fell 46 percent as airlines faced an uncertain future due to record high fuel prices and the threat of recession. Alas, after two weeks of traveling to Berlin, Brussels, and Bruges, these three Cheapos at Work had to fly home on Monday. Pete and Mere flew from Paris, and I returned from Brussels.  Before I get into my “you won’t believe what Continental served us for breakfast” stomach-turne-r, I must apologize for not blogging during my six day hotel hunt in Bruges. The only excuse I can muster is that I was simply too tired to write. I hadn’t anticipated that Bruges would be so charming, friendly, and full of great hotels. But more about Bruges tomorrow. The car was presented to journalists in Geneva and has already managed to gain a sufficient number of positive feedback. Bentley finalized, called GTZ, was the latest in a long series of work vehicles from Zagato built under the order, including shown in the past year Diatto Ottovu and some early works from Ferrari, Aston Martin, Jaguar, Rolls Royce and MG.
