On Breaking Points and Deal-Clinchers: A Conversation With A Friend
2008-08-28 01:44:00 Below is a conversation a very good friend and I have been having via email regarding some of the things frequently written about on this blog. The conversation is still ongoing, but since it does touch on so much of what gets talked about here, I thought I’d share it (I got my friend’s permission, of course). My friend said: Recently I told my devoutly Catholic friend, “I just don’t care whether or not the host is the actual BODY of Christ; it’s meaningful either way”. Then, in a separate conversation with my dad, not a professing Christian to my knowledge, he said to me, “I just don’t care whether or not God sent Jesus or whomever to the world-it makes no difference to me. I just believe there is a God/Spirit moving and it’s mysterious and good. My responsibility is to evolve with it”. my actual question: Jesus is usually my historical breaking point/deal clincher when it comes to TRUTH, but sometimes my under...

Obama And Lieberman In Heated Conversation Today
2008-06-05 04:00:00 By- Suzie-Q @ 7:00 PM MST Obama In Heated Conversation With Lieberman June 4, 2008 12:24 PM Update: Obama and Lieberman had a heated conversation on the floor of the Senate later today. Details below. Senator Joe Lieberman, serving aptly as John McCain’s foreign policy attack dog, jumped on a conference call with reporters on Wednesday to rip holes into Barack Obama’s stance on Israel. Playing off of Obama’s address to the American Israeli Public Affairs Committee, the Connecticut independent acknowledged that he hadn’t heard the speech — and urged for a “civil and constructive” presidential campaign — before taking Obama to task for not being consistently tough on Iran. “I appreciate many of the very good intentions to Israel and Israeli security that Senator Obama express today,” said Lieberman. “I thought in the speech there was a disconnect between things Senator Obama said today, particularly in regard to Iran...

The Difference Between Men and Women in a Conversation
2008-05-26 11:21:00 A little story that shows the essential differences between a man and a woman:Let's say a guy named Roger is attracted to a woman named Elaine. He asks her out to a movie; she accepts; they have a pretty good time. A few nights later he asks her out to dinner, and again they enjoy themselves. They continue to see each other regularly, and after a while neither one of them is seeing anybody else. And then, one evening when they're driving home, a thought occurs to Elaine, and, without really thinking, she says it aloud: "Do you realize that, as of tonight, we've been seeing each other for exactly six months?"Read full entryAnd then there is silence in the car. To Elaine, it seems like a very loud silence. She thinks to herself: Geez, I wonder if it bothers him that I said that. Maybe he's been feeling confined by our relationship; maybe he thinks I'm trying to push him into some kind of obligation that he doesn't want, or isn't sure of.And Roger is thinking: Gosh. Six months.An...

Our necessary conversation about marriage
2008-05-06 19:41:00 I just finished reading David Blankenhorn’s interesting and excellent* The Future of Marriage. I’m not sure yet how I intend to blog about this, either as a more formal review-type post or a series of posts on the issues he raises, but I do want to draw your attention to something he says in the Acknowledgments at the end of the book as it echoes what I’ve been saying about gay marriage at least as long as I’ve been blogging about the topic: Today’s gay marriage debate is an invaluable opportunity for Americans to have a serious national discussion about marriage’s meaning and future. The greatest criticism I make of gay marriage advocates is that most are unwilling to have that conversation. They’ve reduced the discussion to a debate over rights and equality without considering the history of marriage and the very ideas the social institution embodies. Blankenhorn addresses these issues. It one reason I recommend his book. To be sure, t...

Free Amsterdam: Gardens, art, ferries, conversation
2008-05-05 17:34:00 Looking for ways to save some euros while visiting Amsterdam? Here are five suggestions: Try some flower power. Visiting the masterpieces at the Rijksmuseum will set you back €10, but the baroque and renaissance gardens behind it are free to stroll. Delight in the fountains, statues, and the carefully coiffed hedges and plants. The gardens are open daily from 9 am to 6 pm. Baroque gardens are closed on the weekends. (Note: The Rijksmuseum is undergoing extensive renovations that are scheduled to last until 2010. Until then, visitors may visit a scaled down “best of” collection entitled ”Th-e Masterpieces.”) Pick up a passport to paintings. Speaking of the Rijksmuseum, we’re flying high about the joint venture between the museum and Amsterdam’s Schipol Airport. The Rijksmuseum Amsterdam Schipol, an art space at the airport maintained by the museum, offers annual exhibits free of charge. This year, an impressive collection of Van ...

Conversation with a Professional
2008-05-04 05:43:00 While checking out the Improv in Irvine, I happened to cross paths with a real-life professional beat writer/sports journalist/someone who gets paid to do this while I do not. Namely, Matthew Hurst over at Press Enterprise (PE.com). I told him early in the conversation that I wrote for a fantasy baseball blog (his eyes glazed over in thinly veiled disinterest), so I figure everything he said from that point onward is fair game. Traveling with the teamI asked him if any of the old stereotypes about beat writers traveling with the team apply. He said no, they don't. In fact, they are expected to maintain a professional detachment from the players and it's quite a big taboo to fraternize. He makes every road trip, so I can imagine the temptation to mingle must be overwhelming. Who's the biggest jerk he's met amongst MLB'ers*Warning: Gigantic Tangent: I'll be honest, I don't have a lot of baseball stories. But, I do have one great one. Teaching English: a little more action and a little more conversation
2008-04-21 07:39:00 What's it like teaching English to the Chinese? For Gary Toner, Beijing is anything but a forbidding city. Interview by Christopher MiddletonApril 20, TelegraphI started teaching English abroad when I was 22, soon after I graduated from university; I'm 35 now and have been doing it ever since. If you want to travel the world, there are a few ways to earn money while you do so. You can pick fruit, pull pints or teach English. The third option has definitely suited me best. I've taught in Russia, Argentina, Spain and Slovakia and stayed an average of two years in each country. That said, I've been in China for five years. (I'm married now - my wife Sinead also works in Beijing and we have a little daughter called Niamh.)Our flat is in the Sanlitun area, not far from the main football stadium, and I work at various schools in the city. The demand for English language teachers is staggering. Basically, if a Chinese person wants a job with an international company such as Hewlett P...

New Era Marketing is all about Joining the Conversation
2008-04-16 06:26:00 One of my big interests as a Strategic Designer, is in the field of marketing, advertising and branding. In particular this whole buzz about new media and its impact on today's consumers. This is also one of the reason why I started this blog in the first place. I always believe, the best way to find out about something is to do it. From my stand point as a designer, I have always found the consumer behavior part of marketing most intriguing and a very important aspect of the profession of Industrial Design. It is unfortunate that it is not stressed enough in schools in favor of the more engineering requirements. (Which is also equally important.) Daily, I lament on how it is now getting harder to design products that consumers want. The Internet has influenced how we buy things, and as a result, consumers as we know it have change. Consumers are no fools, and we cannot treat them as such, for example by selling them inferior products tempered by price. Armed with the k...
