2009-08-18 03:45:00 If you are tired of saving recipes off of boxes, this book is for you. It features 500 recipes from over fifty brands in a hardback spiraled book format. These recipes are ones consumers requested the most from companies. The thirteen chapters cover every meal time, snack time and desert. Each contributed recipe is just ...
Decisions for the Cookbook
2009-06-23 00:16:00 It’s funny how every day I think about what it is I’m going to work on for my cookbook. Do I make up a new recipe and give it a shot? Do I try a new revision of a previous recipe that dawned on me when I gave it it’s first test run? Or do I just screw it all and eat out instead? (Anything but Italian…) Mmmm… starch. And of course I have to choose between working on antipasto dishes versus pasta dishes versus polenta and so forth. I have to keep all the chapters afloat like an expert plate-spinner if only so I don’t get too tired of one type of Italian food. (No matter what I choose though, my starch intake remains firmly through the roof…) There is the other decision that has to be made whenever I try a new recipe. Does this recipe have potential, and thus just needs a tweaking or slight revision, or is it so far off the mark that is has to be scrapped? As luck would have it, I’ve only had one recipe so far that I felt n...

Create My Cookbook is Not Like the Other Guys
2008-09-08 04:27:00 How many times have you said to yourself, "I need to get all these family recipes into a book"? I know I've said it numerous times over the years. I'm heading into the "I should turn this blog into a cookbook" stage and I've checked out the web for sites that help with that sort of thing, but I've never really been satisfied with what I found out there. The bindings weren't right, I couldn't customize my cover, the layout changed if I wanted to choose more than one binding ... the list goes on.Create My Cookbook is the perfect solution to all of those problems; and more. This site was developed with both the creation of the cookbook and its use in mind. Here are just a few of the things that make Create My Cookbook worth a look:1. The covers are fully customizable. Choose your own photo or one of the many in stock and you're on your way to a completely unique look. Who wants a family cookbook that looks just like the one you bought from the church down the street?2. There are...

Veggie Wednesday: Flavorful India Cookbook
2008-05-28 16:22:00 I don't make Indian cuisine often, but once I started reading Flavorful India: Treasured Recipes from a Gujarati Family by Priti Chitnis Gress, however, I couldn't wait to get out to the grocery to search for ingredients and hurry back home to start cooking.Gujarat (a western Indian state) is largely known for vegetarian dishes, and although we didn't make any of those (we made Tandoori Chicken, Cocktail-Size Meat Samosas and Sweet Dough Balls with Coconut) the dishes we did make were perfect. My very-hard-to-please husband loved the tandoori and the dough balls; something I thought he would turn his nose up at, and the kids ate the samosas as I was cooking them so there weren't many left once we sat down to dinner. I'm confident that the vegetarian dishes would elicit the same response, and we'll be making them to test that theory.I love that each recipe has a story to it, and the sections on cookware and utensils, spices and Indian ingredients are priceless. This is Indian f...

IACP Cookbook Awards: 2008 Winners Announced
2008-04-20 08:14:00 Last night, at an awards ceremony in New Orleans, the International Association of Culinary Professionals announced their 2008 cookbook award winners. Paul Johnson's Fish Forever: The Definitive Guide to Understanding, Selecting, and Preparing Healthy, Delicious, and Environmentally Sustainable Seafood took home the top honor, Cookbook of the Year. John Wiley & Sons led the pack with four awards total, with Fish Forever taking Cookbook of the Year and the Single Subject Category. On Friday morning I printed out the list of the nominees and, Oscar pool-style, checked off the titles I thought would win in each category (with a Cookbook of the Year write-in), put it in a sealed envelope and filed it away to compare and contrast once the IACP picks were revealed. Let's just say, thank goodness I didn't hit the casinos this weekend as my projections were an abysmal one for fourteen. With love from the Calcutta Cookbook
2008-04-14 07:42:00 5th March,2008As a part of my love for regional Indian cuisine, I've decided that once a week, dinner will be from any region other than our own. This week, we are enjoying some homely vegetarian Bengali meals from the chapter Bangla Ranna of The Calcutta CookbookBengali menu for tonightPiaj koli, alu piaj o tomator tarkari (Onion sprouts with potatoes, onions and tomatoes)Masoor DalBoth these recipes are from The Calcutta Cookbook - A Treasury of recipes from pavement to palace, written by Minakshi Das Gupta, Bunny Gupta and Jaya Chaliha. And the special part about both these recipes, is that they have no masalas, spice powders letting the inherent taste of the ingredients come through strongly. More details on The Calcutta Cookbook, here. For once, I followed both recipes to the T and was very happy with the result. As I type this, DH is relishing every little morsel. I ate up earlier to stick to my 8.30 pm deadline for dinner. I hope it is alright to reproduce the recipes from th...

Cookbook Review: Nava Atlas’s Vegan Express
2008-03-12 03:11:00  As you may know, I was a startled and very delighted recipient of Nava Atlas’s latest cookbook, Vegan Express, as a result of Susan’s contest a while back on Fat-Free Vegan Kitchen. A couple of weeks ago, I was thrilled to receive the book in the mail, and set about making a whack of recipes from it. I thought I’d write a bona fide book review so you can all get your own taste of express cooking, vegan style! (Oh, and all you mass-market, consumer magazines out there? Feel free to request a reprint!). Vegan Express by Nava Atlas Vegan Express is the most recent addition to the long line of popular publications by veteran cookbook author Nava Atlas, already well known for her previous classics such as Vegetariana or The Vegetarian Family Cookbook and website, In A Vegetarian Kitchen.  A vegan herself, in this book Atlas addresses one of the foremost hurdles for vegan eaters, both established and newly inclined: prepping veggies can take up lots of time!   ...
No Menu Monday, A Birthday, and a Cookbook of the Week
2008-03-10 03:26:00 Our red plum trees are in full bloom this week! It's nearly here. The big one. It's a milestone birthday for yours truly! Yes. I will be the dreaded 3-0.The funny thing is I'm actually not dreading it at all. I'm 30 years old and I've earned every gray that is quietly sneaking into my auburn-brown hair (okay...maybe I didn't "earn" all of them!), I have a solid faith and I know who I really am, I am married to the most wonderful man on this earth, we have a home of our own, 4 cats who love us, an incredible family, devoted and loving friends, we are happy and blessed and I am glad to be here! I think "30" is not an end, but a new beginning! That being said, this week will not have a standard menu. We'll be off work near the end of the week to celebrate my birthday and to have some rare time together at home. We'll probably have sandwiches, a breakfast night, spaghetti, and I have given Michael specific instructions to make me a gluten free chocolate cake (and since the poor gu...

Cookbook Giveaway: Eat, Shrink and Be Merry
2008-03-09 01:52:00 The Cookery Book Fairy paid me a visit this week, leaving a small pile of books in my cubicle. Yes, apparently when I spend too much time at the office, she comes looking for me in the most obvious of places. You see, she's in the midst of an office move and found several extra copies of Janet and Greta Podleski's Eat, Shrink and Be Merry (the cookbook that accompanies the TV show of the same name). Why did she have extra copies? Her manager bought a whackload to give to staff or to be used as prizes or something, and four remained, taking up valuable real estate. The accompanied message was "You'll know what to do with them."My...that was ominous...If you aren't familiar with the sisters, this is their third cookbook, following Crazy Plates and Looney Spoons. They specialise in healthier, lower fat cooking. They also have their own frozen foods and a very colourful line of kitchen utensils. I've owned a copy of ES&BM for a little while and have cooked from it a few times--...
Another Virtual Cookbook + A Cake Explanation
2008-03-07 13:27:00 Why did I have to trust in the cake from yesterday's post? Last weekend I had some friends over for a potluck dinner and was running very behind schedule. The soup that I made turned out to be a disaster that could not be rescued in time. I still have to rescue that soup come to think about it... But most importantly, I had very little time to make a nice dessert. I was looking at my cake recipes and stumbled upon the Swedish Visiting Cake. It's been blogged about like crazy over the past few years and I had only read good things about it. But when I looked closely at the ingredients, there was no leavening - no baking soda or baking powder, so the cake would not rise. That is quite unusual. I thought maybe I read the recipe incorrectly. Luckily my computer was already on, because I was streaming music, so I looked up the recipe again in a few different places. I was wasting time that I didn't have and the recipes were all the same. I decided to just "trust in the cake...
