Yankee Stadium/Hall of Fame Review
2008-10-03 13:37:00
Yankee Stadium/Hall of Fame Review For the Labour Day weekend this year, Early and I decided to take a road trip to see the Jays play those damn Yankees before Yankee Stadium becomes a pile of rubble. On the way back, we decided to pass through Cooperstown and unleash our inner 12 year olds at the ...
WordsDay: Groff?s Monsters is a lot more than just ambitious chick-lit
2008-05-22 18:55:00
It might be easy to categorize Lauren Groff?s debut novel The Monsters of Templeton as chick-lit with literary pretensions. After all, the main character, Willie Upton, returns to her hometown in self-imposed exile, disgraced and unsure how to find redemption. Willie?s single mother has issues. Her best friend has issues. Men are generally cads, jerks, comic foils not to be taken seriously, or manipulative bastards?or, at best, they move through the world oblivious to nearly everything around them. There?s lots of soul searching, lots of feminine empowerment, lots of women-know-best-wink-wink, nudge-nudge, don?t-we-sisters? But Groff?s novel is nearly perfect in all ways. The writing, the characters, and the insights into life all feel full and fully realized. The Monsters of Templeton is a rich, wonderfully readable literary achievement. Templeton is a not-so-thinly veiled version of Cooperstown, New York, complete with a baseball museum, a national literary icon, the state histori...

Shilling for a Cooperstown Case
2007-10-28 02:30:00
John Perrotto did a fine job in recapping what may have been Curt Schilling’s final start as a Red Sock, a win that raised his World Series record to 4-1 with a 2.06 ERA. As the prospect of the soon-to-be 41-year-old’s free agency looms, one question has found its way into my inbox yet again: is Schilling a Hall of Famer? That may be the most common JAWS question I’ve received over the past couple years, one I’ve addressed in multiple chats as well as indirectly for an ESPN Page 2 piece by BP alum Jonah Keri. Here’s the last conversation I had on the topic back in June: Kurt Billings (Newton): True or False: Had Curt Schilling gotten that final out [to complete a no-hitter] he’d seal the deal on his HOF credentials. Jay Jaffe: False. JAWS-wise, Schilling’s at 103.3 WARP career/63.4 WARP peak /83.4 JAWS, where the average pitcher is at 99.0/62.7/80.9. In a more conventional sense, he’s got 213 wins with a winning percentage above .600, ...

Mitchell Blatt Branding the Ball Won Ecko's Vote, Cooperstown Says They Will Accept It Barry Bonds thinks Mark Ecko is an idiot. Most sports fans who know him like him. He's the guy who bought Bonds' record-setting home run ball and put it's fate up to an online vote. After 10 million votes, the results are in. The ball will be branded with an asterisk and sent to Cooperstown. Baseball
Bonds gear a Cooperstown hit despite home run record controversy (AP)

Like a lot of fans, teenager Matthew Somerville was in a hurry to see the newest exhibit at the Hall of Fame. “This is the helmet Barry Bonds wore when he hit home run number 755 …” he said Friday, shooting and narrating his own video. “It’s incredible to be less than five feet away ...
Gwynn pinpoints his Hall of Fame moment, knew he had a shot at Cooperstown
2007-07-30 01:07:00
Most baseball Hall of Famers will be quick to say they never thought of achieving the game’s ultimate honor. Not Tony Gwynn. At his induction Sunday into the Baseball Hall of Fame, the former San Diego Padres star pinpointed the exact moment — Aug. 6, 1993. “It’s my mother’s birthday, and that was the day ...

The Iron Man Celebrated, Honored and Hailed in Cooperstown Send-Off
2007-07-27 19:11:00
Here's an article I wrote for the DC Sports Box about Cal Ripken and his send-off, hope you enjoy..***Although the Washington D.C. Metropolitan area is pretty much awash with the red, white and blue of the Nationals, lest we forget many in the area for about four decades rooted, cheered and followed the Baltimore Orioles. Our neighbors to the north have not had a lot to cheer about for the past decade, as the Orioles have had nine straight losing seasons, a dramatic decline attendance, and fan dissatisfaction towards owner Peter Angelos. However, on Tuesday night before a match-up with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, fans got a chance to relive the glory days of the past as the Orioles honored Cal Ripken, Jr. in a ?send-off to Cooperstown? celebration.A crowd about 43,000 strong celebrated a universally-respected man who was not only a great baseball player, but also a part of Maryland heritage. The crowd last night was boisterous, decked in black and orange, and you saw the number "8" abou...
Cooperstown or Bust?
2007-07-18 04:47:00
A made up player: For the four years of his career, he rode the bench as a defensive replacement utility player. He amassed a decent group of stats -- he hit .315 over the span, with a total of 20 homers and 57 RBI. A few GMs thought he was the real deal, with his "four years" of stats being

Bonds on Cooperstown collection: ?I?m not worried about the Hall? (AP)
2007-05-29 01:27:00
As Barry Bonds nears his record 756th home run, he’s stockpiling quite a collection of souvenirs — bats, balls, helmets and spikes, pieces of baseball history perfectly suited for the Hall of Fame. Whether he’ll donate any of them to Cooperstown, however, is in doubt. “I’m not worried about the Hall,” the San Francisco slugger ...
Omar Vizquel : Going to Cooperstown?
2007-02-12 02:42:01
Omar Vizquel : Going to Cooperstown?             Today we have a special commentary today, from the father of Kman, MR. Kman himself. Is Omar hall of fame worthy?     When you think of future major league shortstops making the trip to Cooperstown, New York, the players names that immediately come to mind are Alex as in Rodriguez, and Derek Jeter. Both are physical specimens who we have little problem visualizing performing heroic feats on the baseball diamond. But there is another bona-fide candidate for inclusion with the enshrined elite of the past, and his name is Omar,  Omar Vizquel. This physically unassuming shortstop is currently superbly fielding the position for the San Francisco Giants. Granted he is at the tale end of his career, but is a major contributor to his team?s success offensively and defensively. We acknowledge Omar as the only player in major league history who can field a hard hit ground ball with his bare hand and make the seemingly effortless toss to make th...
Cooperstown Bound
2007-01-23 02:41:01
On January 9th, 2007, results were announced for 2007’s Baseball Hall of Fame balloting. A record 545 ballots, including two blank ballots, were cast by Baseball Writers Association of America members with 10 or more consecutive years’ service, eclipsing by 25 the previous mark of 2006 when Bruce Sutter was elected. Players must be named on 75 percent of ballots submitted to gain election. This year, 409 votes were needed. Voters were instructed to cast votes for up to 10 candidates; any candidate who received votes on at least 75% of the ballots would be honored with induction to the Hall. Those candidates who received less than 5% of the vote will not appear on future BBWAA ballots, but may eventually be considered by the Veterans Committee. The ballot consisted of 32 players, 17 of which were eligible for the first time. For the first time in history, performance-enhancing substances became a factor in voting. Two former MVP winners who each admitted to steroid use, J...

Should "Steroid Era" players get into Cooperstown?
2006-12-11 08:45:00
"You get to the Hall of Fame mainly through the voting of baseball writers. I just hope that the writers judge the players on what they did on the field." --Donald FehrIt's easy to dislike Donald Fehr. Many people still place the majority of the blame on him for the infamous 1994 strike. He's the head of the players' union, so of course he's biased. He's only seen when he's arguing on behalf of players, and when collective bargaining rears its ugly head, overshadowing what's happening on the field. Nonetheless, after reading Fehr's comments about Mark McGwire and Hall of Fame voting, I couldn't stop thinking about what he said, and what it meant. Why should people vote in, or more to the point, not vote in a player? Is it fair to consider aspects of that player outside of what they did on the field? That's the question that every writer with a Hall of Fame vote (and many without) is asking themselves. I, of course, have no vote, but I do have an opinion and a theory abo...
